Feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica - Backgrounder

1. Feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica is celebrated in the Universal Church every November9.

2. The feast was declared by Pope Benedict XIII in the year 1726.

3. The Lateran Basilica is one and the oldest of the four (4) major basilicas in Rome built by theCatholic Church. The other three are:

a. St. Peter’s Basilica

b. Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls

c. Basilica of St. Mary Major

4. The Lateran Basilica is the official seat of the Bishop of Rome, who is none other than the Pope.

5. The Lateran Basilica is considered as ”the mother and head of all churches in the City (Rome) andthe World.”
