Take part on January 26th-27th

Did you know that British gardens occupy twice the area set aside for nature reserves? This means they play a vital role in wildlife conservation.

How you can help

Put up nest boxes and roosting pockets These provide places for birds to breed and sleep.

Set up feeding stations High energy foods like stale cake, biscuits, pastry, pasta and potato are enjoyed by many birds. Raisins and other dried fruit are welcomed by Blackbirds and Thrushes. Most garden centres stock

Big Garden Birdwatcha variety of proprietary bird seed and nuts which appeal across the species but don’t forget to scatter some under hedges for shy birds like Dunnocks and Wrens who prefer to feed on the ground.

Make sure fresh water is available It’s important for drinking and bathing.

Once you’ve created a welcoming environment it’s time to sit back and take part in The Big Garden Birdwatch run by the RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds). Simply spend an hour recording how many birds and which species visit your garden on either the 26th or 27th of January and submit your results online at the address below. Not only will the results will be analysed and published on the site but you’ll get the warm glow that comes from knowing you’ve done your bit for bird conservation.

Welsh for ‘Golden Hillside’ and the name of both the site and one of the log cabins, Bron-Yr-Aur is the perfect name for this little piece of heaven in Snowdonia. Whether you’re looking for a tranquil bolt-hole to escape from the rigours of daily life or family-friendly accommodation close to a wide range of outdoor activities, Bron-Yr-Aur offers the very best of both worlds.

Choose from a two-bed cabin that sleeps up to six, or a three-bed cabin sleeping up to eight,

both offering spectacular views over the Rhinog mountain range.

On your doorstepWithin very easy reach is Snowdonia, an area of stunning natural beauty offering a wealth of activities. However, if you are looking for peace and quiet, the wooden-clad, super-insulated cabins are warm and cosy in the winter and cool in the summer. In addition to books and DVD’s, there is also Sky TV with Freeview. There is also a lovely pub serving fantastic homemade food just five minutes’ walk from the cabins

First hand recommendation.Janet from The Village Emporium has stayed at Bron-Yr-Aur with her family: “‘Wicked bunk beds!’ was our girls’ verdict!” she explains. “It was cosy and personal and even in the middle of winter the cabin was warm, feeling more like a home than a holiday let. It was also perfectly located for exploring Snowdonia National Park, plus mountain biking and a high ropes activity area at nearby Coed-y-Brenin.

“The coast isn’t far; Dolgellau, Barmouth, Harlech, Portmeirion and Porthmadog are all within easy reach.

“There are also great facilities on-site; in particular the shop. Plus, dogs are allowed, so you really can bring the whole family!”

Such a bleak time of year doesn’t have to mean bleak food on the plate. Inject some colour and flavour into your dishes with seasonal lovelies such as purple sprouting, chard, rhubarb, oranges and beetroot.

Mussels and oysters are in season In February. Probably the easiest and most common recipe for cooking the mussels is Moules-frites, which simply translates as mussels with fries. Moules marinière is the classic way of cooking mussels using cream, white wine, shallots and parsley.

Although purists like to eat their oysters raw, they can also be grilled, poached or steamed and take on a different texture and flavour.

Why not try one the seasonal recipes from our advertisers.

What to eat now – Village Emporium style! The parties are over and we’re all carrying a little extra weight. So, it’s a good time to get healthy.

If you had told Sue Whitling five years ago that she would one day be a personal trainer and running a successful running club and fitness camps, she readily admits that she would have laughed in your face. She was over forty, overweight, an ex-smoker and too intimidated to go to the gym. It wasn’t until she decided to take part in a Race for Life event that she understood what a positive impact exercise could have on her life. However, she still avoided the gym and would go out running as early as possible to avoid bumping into anyone else in her lycra!

SWEAT moves on in 2013Five years on, Sue is a qualified personal trainer who owns SWEAT (Sue Whitling Exercise and Training). She offers 1:1 personal training, set up ‘Jog On Girls’ and runs SWEAT camp, one hour fat burning, body conditioning sessions for women-only and men-only in Yelvertoft and Crick. Mixed group sessions are planned for 2013.

Sue has helped raise £10,000 plus for charity and last April, ran the Brighton Marathon in aid of DEBRA. However, even now, Sue is far from your stereotypical gym bunny. “My weight still

fluctuates,” she explains. “But the difference is that with regular exercise, I know that if I may put on a few pounds, I can also get rid of them pretty quickly. I want to pass these benefits on to others in a fun, supportive environment. That’s what SWEAT is all about.” She is clearly succeeding, according to one of her clients;

“I can honestly say I have never felt better – tons more energy and lots more smiles!” Zona Dipple - Crick

2013 will see a team of friends climbing the Three Peaks in aid of Pancreatic Cancer with survivor Dane Wilde. Sue will be taking part and putting together a tailor made training plan for “Danes Threesome” – you can read his incredible story and donate at www.justgiving.com/Dane-Wilde

It’s never too late to SWEAT!

Some people are just lucky. Right? Wrong! You have to create your own luck. While luck isn’t an exact science, there are certainly ways you can make yourself luckier.

Here are a few tips for making your own luck.

Take control of your actions and your lifeHave you ever heard “If I’d have gone to University, I’d have got a better job” or“If it hadn’t been for the economic downturn, I’d still be in business”. People who say “If it hadn’t been for…” are in danger of attributing lack of success to external factors. Accept that where you are in life is a direct result of the actions you have taken and you are on course to change your luck.

Many events are out of our control - but the way we respond to them isn’t. Even if we can’t control what

happens to us, we can control how we react to it,

and, therefore the results.

Putting this into practice:

Start by taking 100% responsibility for what you say and

do. Good or bad. Stop saying “I should, I ought not to, I will try”. They leave room for failure. Instead use “I chose not to, I have decided to, I will”.

Get some stickability“Thousands of people could have done the same thing that Bill Gates did, at the same time. But they didn’t...How many of them changed their life plans and cut their sleep to near zero, essentially inhaling food so as not to let eating interfere with work to throw themselves into writing Basic for the Altair? How many defied their parents, dropped out of college and moved to Albuquerque to work with the Altair? That’s not luck, that’s return on luck.”*

*Jim Collins writing for the New York Times

How many of us have abandoned study courses, or have barely used sports equipment in the cupboard? How different could your life have been if you had stuck with one of those half-finished projects? Kept up that language and you could have had a job in linguistics. Kept up the sports and you could have had a great hobby that helped you get a work/life balance.

Putting this into practice: Start fewer things, but see them through. It doesn’t all have to be about your career either!

2013 – unlucky for

some?

Take more risksPeople who consider themselves lucky tend to take more chances, strike up more conversations with strangers, and follow more job leads. Instead of telling themselves: “There’s not a cat in hell’s chance” they tell themselves “maybe I should give it a go”. And they get stuff—good stuff, like an upgrade to business class (simply because they asked for it), or a promotion (they had the confidence to ask for a sit-down with the boss). And it gets better: Good outcomes increase the belief that you can accomplish whatever you set out to do, which fuels an appetite for future risk.

Putting this into practice: Ask yourself this: What’s the worse that can happen if I try this and fail? Chances are, it isn’t all that bad. Then ask yourself: “What will I regret more months or even years down the road: taking the risk or playing it safe?” You already know the answer to that.

Brush off failureYes, failure sucks. But if you’re going to let a critic’s harsh words take you out of the game—or make you reconsider your goal—you’re making a serious mistake. An important trait among lucky people is that they don’t get terribly fazed when something doesn’t go according to plan, and they tend to move quickly to the next step.

James Dyson worked for years on his Dyson vacuum cleaner before his concept was taken seriously. It took him 5 years and 5127 prototypes to get it right. In his words “that’s 5126 failures. But I learned from each one. That’s how I came up with a solution. So I don’t mind failure.” Putting this into practice: Instead of sulking over a setback, use it to your advantage. Remember, life’s little roadblocks aren’t the end, they’re opportunities to tweak your talents and iron out the kinks so you can try again.

2013 – unlucky for

some?

Consider yourself luckyWant to improve your luck? It could be as easy as adjusting your attitude. Studies show that people who consider themselves lucky actually tend to be—it’s a self-fulfilling prophecy. That’s because positive thinkers are always keeping their eyes peeled for fortuitous situations, and they’re more likely to jump on them when they arise. It’s a numbers game: If you believe you have a good shot at winning, you’re more likely to participate in something. The more you take advantage of these chance opportunities, the more you improve your odds.

Putting this into practice: Go to that social event, enter that competition, try that new class, make that phone call. The more you do, the more chances there are for lucky coincidences.

It’s not everyday you see a dentist walking hand in hand with a tooth, or playing football with a team of teeth, but then Courtyard Family Dental Practice is not your average dentist.

Nestled in a picturesque courtyard in the pretty village of Dunchurch, Courtyard really is, as it states, a ‘family’ dentist. When owner Alexia set up the practice five years ago, she wanted to ensure that the surgery was somewhere that people of all ages would feel comfortable and not nervous.

The surgery is light, airy, colourful and welcoming, and Alexia and her staff, which includes Alexia’s dental surgeon husband, even colour co-ordinate their uniforms depending on the day of the week to make the experience more relaxing for patients. Alexia says, “A lot of people feel trepidation about going to the dentist. But we know that if done the right way, it can actually be a reassuring and even pleasant experience.”

Being a family dentist, Courtyard welcomes patients young, old, and in between, and even offers a special ‘passport’ programme where children can earn ‘stamps’

each time they visit. Alexia says, “It’s important for young children especially to make these early experiences of going to the dentist a positive one, so with our staff, our surgery and our treatment we make sure the visit to Courtyard Dental is something they can feel happy about.”

“For us and for our clients, the advantage of being a family dentist is that we really do get to know your teeth personally, and how to get them in the cleanest, brightest and healthiest condition,” she adds.So why not give your teeth the good treatment they deserve, and make an appointment with Courtyard Family Dental Practice? You wont regret it, and neither will your teeth.

It’s an hour into Leamington Hastings Silver Surfers’ (LHSS) weekly two-hour Friday-morning meeting – where ‘older folk’ with their laptops learn how to make the most of their link with cyberspace, the Internet and all things IT – when Olive (an enthusiastic 80-year-old) reveals her most recent exploits.

“I dug out an old printer I got ages ago to use it with my laptop,” she tells the regulars who have been meeting for almost 10 years since Age Concern (now known as Age UK) launched Silver Surfers. “But when I plugged it in I got an error message telling me it was incompatible... Anyway, I decided to look for the right drivers, download them and install them and guess what, it works – I did it!”

The fact that 10 years ago Olive couldn’t even switch on a computer is a tribute to both her enthusiasm and the benefits of the Silver Surfers scheme, which operates in many libraries and community venues in Warwickshire and nationally. LHSS was one of the first groups to be established, founded by local journalist, Keith Read, and a former resident of Leamington Hastings, Gill Brown, who was closely involved with Age Concern in Rugby.

“Thanks to Gill’s links with Age Concern we received a computer, scanner, printer and even a digital camera to get the group off the ground,” said Keith. “In those days we had a very slow dial-up connection to our Internet service provider – but it was enough to get our dozen-or-so members hooked into the benefits of computers and the Internet.

“It wasn’t long before they’d all put laptops on their Christmas and birthday present lists! That meant we had to invest in BT’s broadband service – costly, because we’re classed as business... However, we’ve been extremely fortunate in receiving grants from the Leamington Hastings Charity and members now pay a subscription. We’ve also taken stalls at car boot sales to raise funds by selling items that members have donated.”

Olive is thrilled to have got to grip with IT. “I really enjoy my computer,” she says. “It gives me a lot of pleasure and I use it to order presents for my family in America. I can do everything online – select the gifts, pay for then and have them delivered. I was one of the first to join LHSS and I’ve never looked back.”

A recent member is Brian, a youthful 75 and ardent angler. “I’m in three different fishing clubs and nearly all communications from the clubs are via e-mail; so I need to keep up to date with the technology. Tony Noble, who helps Keith run LHSS, has been a great help. He explains everything in a very positive way.”

For Frank, a farmer, being able to use computers is essential. “So much of what farmers have to do today is computer-based that it’s impossible to work without them... Silver Surfers has given me the confidence to ‘have a go’ and not be intimidated by new technology.”

Have-a-go Frank is also a keen canoeist. “Being able to read the canoe club newsletter online and keep in touch is so convenient,” he says.

To contact LHSS, call 01926 813603.

Timeless CraftmanshipTompkins is one of the region’s most well established and successful joinery companies having been fulfilling customer needs in bespoke joinery for over 30 years. During this time their business has progressed from humble beginnings; operating from a modest barn in Daventry with only a basic tool kit, to large commercial premises, specialist computer controlled cutting machines and a dedicated loyal workforce to boot.

Run by Andy and his wife Sally Tompkins, a former nurse (with a little help from the family’s dog Tilly), there’s a genuine commitment to provide an exemplary piece of bespoke craftsmanship with the minimum of fuss too. Talking to them they have this self-assurance that comes from being able to convert lumps of wood into something very special, perhaps that’s because what they do for a living, most of us can only dream about?

“The ability to create beautiful pieces for the interiors and exteriors of homes and commercial businesses, is extremely satisfying”, says Andy Tompkins, Director and founder of the firm. “Knowing that a customer can get pleasure from looking at our work, not just for a day or a month, but even years, is a real

privilege. Of course, nowadays we incorporate modern machinery into our processes but our skill in being able to get the best out of it remains undiminished. In the hands of an amateur, it’s still just a machine, but in the right hands and within the right business, we are, what at one stage would have been termed Artisans, and that’s sufficient for me.”

At a time when UK manufacturing is frequently under the microscope, Tompkins do this often under the radar, yet Andy has been responsible for providing apprenticeships to many young professionals, who in some cases have gone on to create businesses of their own. Andy, a passionate supporter of his trade demonstrates this to through Tompkins being audited and fully accredited members of the British Woodworking Federation (BWF), where he sits on the WIT Forum - Woodworking Industry Training forum panel.

We all remember the so-called sub-prime lending fiasco and the global recession that ensued. But following the panic, an entrepreneurial spirit has gripped our nation. The number of new businesses in the UK grew by 180,000 last year. And with surveys showing that up to three-quarters of us have, at one time or another, dreamt of working for ourselves - what’s stopping you?

1. Everything is cheaper at the momentFrom land and equipment to commercial office space and personnel, everything costs less at the moment. Take advantage and get set up now.

2. There is a lot of talent out thereIn an era when even Microsoft is laying off, there are a lot of talented workers out there looking for their next opportunity.

3. Help is at handThe Government is desperate to help entrepreneurs and new start-ups to help kick-start our stagnant economy. Numerous schemes and initiatives have been launched, from trying to force more banks to lend more money to businesses, to start-up incentives and grants.

If you’re thinking of starting a business in Daventry then get in touch with the Daventry Business Partnership on 01327 828391 or visit www.daventry.co.uk for further information on how they can help.

4. Businesses like using contractorsMany companies are cutting their permanent workforce and relying on contractors to pick up work on a project-by-project basis. If you offer a service, this could mean a real opportunity for you. You may well have lower overheads too, which means that your prices can be competitive.

5. There’s less competition from the big boysThe recession means that large companies are not willing to risk investing in new products or ideas right now. This creates an opportunity for smaller companies to take this business from them. If you can identify a niche product or gap in the service market that nobody is tapping into right now, then this could be the time to develop a business for yourself.

6. Start-up media has never been better, or cheaperAll the things you need to start a business: logo design, brochures, letterheads, business cards, websites - even advertising space - used to cost a fortune. But the birth of digital printing, social media and royalty free stock imagery has helped change all that. Local companies offer start-up packages as a one-stop shop to get you up and running.

7. If you’ve lost your job, you have nothing to lose...Sometimes, the best business decision is the one you are forced into, and the incentive for income is often enough to push those previously “on the fence” to take the plunge. Still not sure? Microsoft, Dyson and Hewlett Packard all started in recessions.

Feature

After running my own business for many years, we have experienced all types of interesting challenges when it comes to sta and technology. Gone are the days when you had the power to stop individuals from accessing Facebook or instant messaging systems simply by disabling the rights to view from your server, as they just use their smart phones when they nip to the toilet every 5 mins! I remember tutting at others in the o ce who constantly took personal calls in work time, or reprimanding a sta member for having accessed their Hotmail account whilst at work…hasn’t life changed over the last 3-4 years?

Today, many companies have branched out with Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn accounts, internal blogs, and even Pinterest boards. Promoting the use of social media for employees has proven to be good for business. But why allow it during o ce hours? Research has indicated that employees who were allowed to watch the latest You Tube hilarity, send out a few Tweets, or plough through their Google Reader throughout the day were more productive than those who worked straight through. Brief breaks between di cult projects allows the brain to reset, refresh, and renew leading to higher levels of concentration.

It’s a little bit like receiving a funny cartoon on the fax machine and passing it around the o ce… the good old days!

If you are concerned about allowing access to social media platforms at work, then please consider these bene ts:-

• If you have external employees (on-call, eld sales, engineers etc), social media platforms connect everyone together. • Connecting everyone creates a great company culture and vibe. • You may discover a dark horse, a real creative star in the making that would have previously been overlooked. • Increases motivation and you would be amazed that the conversations will continue long after working hours. • Liberal social networking policies can help retain talented employees.• Social networks allow for quick question answering and problem solving. Tweeting about how your website is down and asking if others are having the same problem, may bring the website provider to get a move on xing the problem.

Are there potential downfalls to social media mixed with business? Sure. If you’re not good about keeping yourself on track, or are distracted easily, Tweeting during crunch time isn’t a good plan. There’s also the problem of spilling the beans about company secrets or business deals that aren’t approved for public release. Having a company social media policy is essential for all businesses, so ensure that you have yours in place!

Bottom line: social media has become a key to being competitive in the market, whatever your business is.

So now I’ll pose it to you: Would you let your employees engage in social media during ‘business’ hours?
