RACKTOP SIMPLIFIES VIRTUAL DESKTOPS
THE CASE FOR VIRTUAL DESKTOPS
WHY VIRTUAL DESKTOPS?
Many organizations are choosing to explore and implement the use of
virtual desktops in place of traditional desktop and laptop deployments.
The biggest initial driver for implementing virtual desktops is driven by
cost. Secondary reasons typically include increased mobility, better secu-rity, easier management, reduced desktop outages and interruptions. All
of these secondary reasons enhance the user experience and drive down
the organizations total cost of ownership for desktop services. Once us-
ers start using a well implemented virtual desktop they fall in love with
the mobility and ubiquitous access to their desktop from anywhere.
DRIVING DOWN COSTS WITH VIRTUAL DESKTOPS
The total cost of ownership calculation for desktops includes several cost
centers and factors. The primary cost areas are the cost of the equipmentand software, the staffing cost to manage and administer desktops, and
the indirect cost of lost user productivity when users are unable to log in
or use their desktop effectively. A shift from traditional desktops to virtual
desktops removes a significant portion of the direct costs out of desktop
administration. Some of these cost savings are applied to the equipment
and costs of Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI), which requires more li-
censing and server infrastructure than a traditional desktop architecture.
The reduction in administrative overhead is significant. Admins can make
an update to a single desktop image and publish it to everyone imme-
diately, or they can refresh a troubled desktop to make it like new with
the single click of a button from anywhere. This means the latest software
update can be tested quickly and provided to everyone in a moment.
Or, it can be rolled back just as quickly if a problem is discovered. The
indirect cost savings comes from higher user productivity. Organizations
may or may not realize how much productivity is lost by their employees
because desktops are not operating as expected, viruses or malware are

infecting the corporate infrastructure, it takes days to roll out the latest software to every desktop, or users have to
wait for an admin to arrive at their desk to investigate and resolve a problem. Virtual desktops can increase user
productivity and reduce the burden on desktop administrators. With virtual desktops users can access their same
desktop securely from home or mobile device and be supported by an IT admin located anywhere. Users can work
from home rather than the office in the case of a disaster, terrorist event, or snow day.
ENSURING SUCCESS AND A COST SAVINGS
Gartner reports that a loosely managed IT environment can save as much as 42% of their total cost of ownership
for desktops by moving to virtual desktops. To ensure the highest savings organizations must implement virtual
desktops in a way that will reduce the risk of the implementation and transition. The faster the implementation the
higher the savings since an admin is spending less time supporting desktops and a successful implementation
sooner means that users are more productive sooner leading to indirect cost savings. To increase the probability of
success many organizations consider mimicking reference architectures or leveraging VDI consultants. The prob-
lem with reference architectures are that VDI has several parts and no two businesses are identical so it is flawed
to assume your users will have the same requirements and behaviors of the users in the reference architecture.
VDI consultants are often effective at implementing a successful outcome, but they will reduce your cost savings.
RACKTOP TURNS MONTHS INTO DAYS
When RackTop was asked by VMware to join VMwares Rapid Desktop Program typical VDI proof of concepts
were taking 12-18 months. Many traditional implementations take months because the internal IT staff spends
time trying to review and architect a solution by choosing a storage solution, a compute solution, and network
architecture. Next they have to size each of them for their VDI requirements which are difficult to quantify. vBOX by
RackTop eliminates that completely by offering customers an integrated turn-key appliance that can be installed in
less than a day. It has everything you need to get started inside. The appliance is installed and ready to accept the
desktop image from the customer so users can start testing and using their virtual desktop immediately. RackTop
has expertise and experience in VDI deployments of all sizes from less than 25 desktops to over 10,000. As part of
the consultative pre-sales engagement RackTop qualifies your implementation and sizes the vBOX to meet your
needs and desktop availability. That means you are essentially getting a VDI consultant for free to reduce your risk
of successfully implementing VDI to zero.
