description

Research into what life maybe like in 80 years. VAVO placed particular focus on the effects of nano technology on the human body. This created a theme of 'what if.....'.

“Coal and diamonds, sand and computer chips, cancer and healthy tissue: throughout history, variations in the arrangement of at-oms have distinguished the cheap from the cherished, the diseased from the healthy.”

Our vision of the future is a world where tech-nology has become the translator between humans & the environment. We will be wiser caretakers of the one habitat that we have, this will require working together with the natural world. We do not see ourselves as the only intelligent species worth protecting, but have come to realize that the only smart evolution-ary step is working with natures processes.

Our habitats of the future will become fully reactive living environments. Nanotech capable of structuring biological growth will be able to re-purpose natural systems to accommodate human needs, while still providing for the needs of the living environment. Construction processes of the past are obsolete & wasteful, all processes of the modern world will start at the cellular level like natural processes but will be influenced by the nano technology embedded at the foundation.

GROWINGPOTENTIALS*

>SURFACE

Plant growth can be re-engineered and re-scaled; leaves become panels, branches become structures.

Transparency can be achieved through molecular manipulation, enabling glass canopies for spectral penetration.

Support for architectural growth can be influenced by reinforcing growth through changing the density & Materiality of a limb or foundation.

22

Trees can replace traditional static structures, and be grown to specification, creating cus-tom environments that change over time. Our architecture thus becomes a living entity. We are creating symbiotic relationships more in harmony with the natural world.

24

Nanites are embedded into our surroundings, creating a distributed pervasive network. Everything becomes linked and awareness is globalised. We are also given the ability to communicate “telepathically” with other people due to everyone having the nanotech as a part of their physical make-up, enabling us to have a general sense of people feelings and thoughts. For those we have grown closer with these lines of ‘feeling’ are strengthened by the strength of the relationship and how open or “visible” we wish to be.

Nanites can release hormones and chemicals into the body, activating DNA and modifying homeostatic processes. They also can interact directly and perform mechanical interventions, such as knitting bones, repairing wounds, and clearing arteries.

28

Our physical senses are supplemented with the virtual information that the nanites provide. The virtual/real dichotomy is erased, & nanites provide a seamless integration & movement between the two worlds.

>AUGMENTED REALITY

30

Nanites can store and utilise solar energy. This is used to power themselves and provide energy for the activities they perform.

The natural process of photosynthesis can be harnessed as energy by tapping into the natural energy stored in the plants through chloroform extraction.

>ENERGY

32

Nanites are everywhere, prolific as bacteria, permeating all things. Boundaries blur and individuality becomes relativistic, a function of awareness.

34

Nanotech fused with Biotech can become the building blocks that we use to live in a futuristic world, we no longer dominate and bend our environment to serve our cause but we live in harmony with the world around us, encouraging a “garden of Eden” environment.

“Every industry that involves manufac-tured items will be impacted by nano-technology research. Everything can be made in some way better—stronger, lighter, cheaper, easier to recycle—if it’s engineered and manufactured at the nanometer scale.” Stan Williams, Director of Quantum Science Research, HP Labs

INFLUENCE & GROWTH ARE RELATIVE*Influencing our surroundings is a constant compromise between humanity & Nature. Harmonious existence as earthly beings requires communication & understanding. Nanotechnology becomes the translator between humanity & Nature.

THE FIRST STEP TO HARMONY IS AWARENESS. BY CONNECTING OUR AWARENESS TO OUR SURROUNDINGS & OTHERS, OUR RELATIONSHIP DEEPENS, OUR UNDERSTANDING OF THE WORLD INCREASES. PROXIMITY DECREASES. GLOBAL BECOMES LOCAL.
