"It felt amazing to be conference champs. We worked so hard and did our best and it showed through. It was great!" Starck said. Photo by H. Knigge The 2017 Southern Nebraska Conference (SNC) cross country race was far from typical for runners. Weather conditions included rain, mud and impending lightning made it a day for everyone to remember. “It was ultimately up to the event coordinator which in this case was Wilber’s activities director. The conference didn’t want to just get the girls race in and not the boys, so the best option was to run them together even if the conditions were less than ideal,” activities director Derek Anderson said. This was something head coach Kristi Peterson hadn't seen in her eight years of coaching. She thought it was quite unusual for a varsity race, and it was by far the messiest race she had ever seen. But, for the athletes, it wasn't nearly as bad as some of them thought it would be. Some even found the experience to be fun, but what most view it as is one of the most memorable races they had ever run. "It was a definitely a race I will never forget, it was almost enjoyable,” Braden Graham ‘19 said. “Everybody falling down and laughing, I even fell three times myself!” The boys and girls running together also presented other problems. This decision led to mixed feelings all over the team, with the biggest concern being that it would be yet another obstacle the team had to overcome. “I feel like it was safer but part of me wishes we would’ve run separate because I felt like there was a lot of competition at the beginning plus there was a lot of falling down at the beginning in front of the girls,” Autumn Branson ‘19 said. However, the conditions and joint race proved to be no obstacle for both the girls and boys teams, as the girls walked away with their second conference championship, and the boys came away third with two medalists--the most since 2005. “It felt really good because it showed that all my hard work during the season was paying off," Isaac Robertson ‘19 said. "I was running close to my best time which was exciting because districts was right around the corner.” For many it was just a race, but for the cross country team it was more than that. The mud washed away, the rain and sweat dried, shoes, spikes and jerseys were cleaned, but the memories made that day are forever going to stick with the cross country team of 2017. 92 Cross Country Walsworth Yearbooks Online Design Proof - Copyright Walsworth Yearbooks - Only provided as a proof PDF - Printers other than Walsworth Yearbooks are explicitly restricted from printing this PDF or recreating it in any form.
