State Bank of Pakistan – Issuance of Bank Notes (Third Series)

The Third series of banknotes was an emergency issue, prepared due to the 1971 war.

After the independence of East Pakistan as Bangladesh – Pakistan demonetized the notes and prepared a new series of notes that was unavailable to the people of Bangladesh.

The existing designs of the 1-, 5-, 10- and 50-rupee notes were utilized in the new issue, but the colours were changed.

The only new note that was not based on an existing design was the 100-rupee notes.

State Bank of Pakistan – Issuance of Bank Notes (Fourth Series)

The secession of East Pakistan called for changes to the banknotes issued by the State Bank of Pakistan. There was now no need for Bengali text to appear on the notes and the images of tea gardens and jute-laden boats were no longer appropriate for banknotes circulating in the Pakistan.

On 12th July 1976, in the key implementation of the new series of banknotes, 5-, 10- and 100-rupee notes were introduced.

On 29th December 1977, the 50-rupee note was introduced. During 1982 all denominations were released with a line of Urdu text added

to their back, The text reads ‘Rizq-e-Halal ain ibadat Hai’. On 7th February 1984, the State Bank of Pakistan modified the line of Urdu

text on the back of all notes as ‘Husool-e-Rizq-e-Halal ibadat hai’. On 24th August 1985 a 2-rupee note was introduced. On 1st April 1986, a new 500-rupee note was introduced in circulation. A 1000-rupee note was introduced on 18th July 1987.

State Bank of Pakistan – Issuance of Bank Notes (New Generation)

With the introduction of latest technology like photocopier and scanner, the preparation of Forged notes has become easier and they look like genuine notes until and unless they are examined with the devices which are not available to general public.

To overcome this situation, State Bank of Pakistan decided to use newly available technology with more added security features in printing of banknotes by PSPC.

On 13th August 2005, State Bank of Pakistan introduced 20-rupee bank note first time in the history of Pakistan with added security features.

With the introduction of 20-rupee banknote we have entered in the era of adoption of latest printing technology.

On 27th May 2006, new series of banknotes, of 10- and 5000-rupee were introduced.

On 11th November 2006, new series of banknotes, of 100- and 500-rupee were introduced

Commemorative SBP a special 5-rupee note Issued on Pakistan’s 50th anniversary. 5 million printed and issued. Released into circulation on 13 August 1997.

Hajj Notes Since partition, Pakistani notes exported from Pakistan could be freely

converted into foreign exchange. The free convertibility of the Pakistani rupee created opportunities for

rupees to be smuggled out of Pakistan and later presented by foreign banks to the Pakistani authorities for payment in pounds sterling.

In September 1949, complete restriction were made on export and import of Pakistani Currency.

Special notes for the express use of the Hajj pilgrims. In May 1950 for curbing the smuggling of Pakistani notes, Government

through an ordinance amended the State Bank Order to allow the issue of special notes, or ‘Hajj notes’.

Hajj Notes were issued with same design, slight color variation and with an over print “Hajj Note” indicating the specific use of the notes.

The Hajj notes were not legal tender in Pakistan, but they could be used in Saudi Arabia to purchase Saudi riyals and be remitted to Pakistan via the usual channel of the Saudi Arabian banks.
