1. Introduction

My works are carried out during the period 2001 - 2015, initiated at theCavanilles Institute of Biodiversity (University of Valencia, Spain), andbased on the study and classification of ornamental and alien floras inSpain; the results have been used in my doctoral thesis entitled “CertainAspects of the Ornamental Flora of Valencia”, supervised by Dr. JosepAntoni Rosselló Picornell, and also in the publication in scientificjournals of numerous articles together with several monographs and thecreation of the first volume, in 2006, of the Bouteloua scientific journal, aSpanish journal dedicated to the study of ornamental flora from ascientific perspective. The results of this line of work have increased ourknowledge regarding the number of species and cultivars cultivated and/orcommercialized in Spain, and also of the presence of these taxa in alienflora. In these works, we have discovered numerous cultivars that had notbeen mentioned in existing recent horticultural literature.

Numerous data is found regarding cultivated plant varieties in historical botanicalworks in Spain, for example, in the Muslim period numerous cultivars are mentionedin the medieval “Book of Agriculture” (Zacaria, 1802), or in the sixteenth century, byHerrera (1970), an ecclesiast and agronomist, in his “Book of Agriculture”, publishedfor the first time in 1513.

We find images that representcultivars in “The Codex” byJaume Honorat Pomar, a bookfrom the sixteenth century, thatshows numerous exotic plantengravings from New Worldspecies as well as those from theOld World, where we can observecultivars including the Tulipa L.genus. This work has recentlybeen published for the first time(López, 2000).

We find works in the nineteenthcentury of a particular value from ahorticultural point of view, such as the“Treaty of the Flowers” in which themethod is explained to cultivate thosethat serve as adornment of thegardens,, by Boutelou & Boutelou(1804),, the “Test on the Varieties ofthe Common Grapevine” by Clemente(1807), or the “Descriptive BotanyHandbook” by Cutanda & Amo (1848)that is the true gem for the currentanalysis and study of Spanishcultivated flora.

In the twentieth century, the book by Dantín (1920) must be emphasized as anexample of significant compiled works on cultivated plants and varieties in Spain, along with the book by Pañella (1970) during the second half of the twentieth century, that present a list of plants and cultivars cultivated in this geographic area.

Currently, the Spanish ornamentalFlora, José Manuel Sánchez et al.work, is the most important work ofcataloguing of the Spanish ornamentalflora (2000-2014), with six publishedvolumes. Along with these more generalcompiled works, Mr. José ManuelSánchez has published numerous articlesin technical magazines dedicated to theworld of horticulture, concentrating onthe study of genus, plant families orspecific groups, along with numerousbooks and publications dedicated to thestudy of ornamental flora on a locallevel . These works have represented asignificant point of reference for ourstudies.

Information has been taken from several sources for the development of mywork:

1. Field work in several areas of the Spanish landscape .2. Nursery catalogue compilations (Spanish and foreign nurseries that market

their products in Spain). More than 1500 nursery catalogues have beenselected that contain cultivars produced, marketed and registered for thesecompanies, and if possible that contain descriptions of the Series to whichthe cultivars belong, and images of the cultivars.

3. Compilation of the information contained in catalogues of nurseries fromthe 19th and 20th centuries referred to varieties of plants grown andmarketed in Spain

4. Visits to collections specialising in certain families, mostly of succulent plants.

The doctoral thesis, based on a compilation of articles published inseveral Spanish magazines, represents a first approach to the study ofthe Valencian ornamental flora.

The objetives of this work:1. Identify species naturalized and cultivated some genera belonging to

the family Agavaceae, Aloaceae and Cactaceae.2. Update the catalogue of alien species from the Valencian community.3. To establish a first list of invasive or potentially invasive ornamental

plants of the natural environment in the Valencian Community.

As I have indicated, during these years havebeen published, alone or in collaboration withother authors, numerous scientific articles thathave been increasing the number of cultivarsknown in Spain, and that we can include intofour groups:1. The study of the alien flora of ornamentalorigin.2. Data contributed by historical Spanishbotanical works.3. The study of the Spanish ornamental flora.4. New species and cultivars.

From the point of view of the study of the alien flora of ornamentalorigin, and as a result of this line of inquiry, works have been publishedwhere cultivars belonging to different genera have been listed. Others arecentred on the study of families, genera or species, for example, for theCactaceae Agavaceae, Aizoaceae, Portulacaceae, Crassulaceae andAloaceae families, or genera such as Ipomoea, Lavandula, Centranthus,Papaver, Robinia, Chlorophytum or Hedera.

A key project to study the Spanish ornamental plants was the creation, in 2006,of the journal Bouteloua (http://www.floramontiberica.org/), which is dedicatedto the study of ornamental plants, which have been published so far nineteenvolumes, and has included numerous works devoted to issues related to cultivatedplants, Spaniards historic gardens, field studies on ornamental flora, non-nativeand invasive ornamental flora of the natural environment etc. This is the firstjournal in Spain that publish iconography and information of varieties of plantscultivated/marketed in Spain.

The Editorial Board of the journal is composed of doctors Daniel GuillotOrtiz, Gonzalo Mateo Sanz (University of Valencia) and Josep Antoni RossellóPicornell (University of Valencia), being responsible for the website Dr. José LuisBenito (Jolube Consulting Environmental. Jaca, Huesca).
