The exhibition presents the diversity of Finnish nature, its scenery and events, and photographers’ experiences and

ideas born in the natural environment. Displayed are the photographs recognised in

the Nature Photo of the Year competition 2012. Sometimes termed

the eighth wonder of the world, the terracotta army of the first emperor of China

will march to Vapriikki this year. The tomb of Emperor Qin Shi Huangdi, from more than

2,000 years ago, was accidentally discovered in 1974, when a digging peasant accidentally

struck his spade against the head of a terracotta warrior. Subsequent archaeological digs have

revealed almost 8,000 warriors arranged in battle formations based on the military strategies of the

day. All of them have individual facial features and hairstyles.

The exhibition presents not only a bronze carriage and the magical soldiers guarding the tomb but also many other finds made in

the tomb, alongside imperial treasures from the Qin and Han dynasties. Similarly to

ancient Egyptians, whose beliefs are presented in

the Mummies exhibition at Vapriikki, the ancient

Chinese believed that life continues in much the same

way after death. This is why the deceased were

buried with the same things they needed

in life – that is, food, drink and entertainment.

This exhibition looks at the relationship between birds and Finns (and other Fenno-Ugrian peoples) over the millennia, starting with the creation myth in the Finnish national epic Kalevala and ending with Angry Birds.

This humorous and playful exhibition, built around an information pack on Finnish birds and objects from the Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography in St. Petersburg, examines the bird as both a cultural and a biological creature. For those who wish to sing like a bird, there is a karaoke room with bird-themed songs, and children can curl up in a soft bird’s nest.

Life after death is an important element of many religions. It also intrigued ancient Egyptians who followed a strict routine when preparing their dead for the final journey. Dead bodies were embalmed and mummified and, depending on the wealth of the deceased, equipped with both daily utensils and precious ritual objects.

The Mummies exhibition at Vapriikki was put together in cooperation with the Egyptian Museum of Florence. It focuses on the cult of death in ancient Egypt, especially the secrets of embalment and mummification. Displayed are truly unique objects: authentic Egyptian mummies, sarcophagi, ritual objects, jewellery and everyday objects.

JARI KURRITHE TRAILBLAZERAwards from a Legendary Career7.3.2013–2.3.2014

This unprecedented exhibition presents Jari Kurri’s legendary career. On display are his magnificent NHL prizes and items from his youth, league seasons, and the time he played with the Finnish men’s national team!

The Finnish Hockey Hall of Fame presents the history of ice hockey in diverse ways. The exhibition showcases an authentic Canada Cup and a World Championship trophy, along with a Hall of Fame of inductees from the Finnish national ice-hockey team. You can also test your scoring skills with the scoring simulator!

An abundant collection of paper dolls of the 1870s to the 1980s from the collections of the Haihara Museum Foundation and Tampere museums is displayed in this exhibition. These paper dolls take the visitor on a colourful nostalgia tour through childhood, ideals and the fashion of different eras.

Innovations is an exhibition and research project focusing on the past and present of local technical expertise. Tampere is a city where many technical devices were first taken into use, and it has also been quick to adopt many technologies developed elsewhere. Displayed is the history of the metal industry and engineering works, modern IT research, and medical technology. The exhibition also sheds light on the roots of Nokia Corporation and its current significance in the Tampere region.

Which innovation do you find the most important?

The Tammerkoski Rapids exhibition tells the story of Tampere through time and of the city’s residents and phenomena. The exhibition presents the lives of some Tampere residents via brief glimpses and cartoons. A miniature model of Tampere from 1890 is the centrepiece of the exhibition.

Located beside the Tammerkoski rapids, Vapriikki is a museum centre that offers things to see and do for the whole family. We put up about a dozen exhibitions each year, with varied themes including history, technology and natural sciences. Vapriikki is also home to the Natural History Museum of Tampere, the Finnish Hockey Hall of Fame, the Shoe Museum, and the Doll Museum. Visitors are served by the museum restaurant Valssi and the museum shop, which sells a wide selection of literature and gifts.

Vapriikki is housed in the old Tampella factory hall, the oldest parts of which were built in the 1880s. The large exhibition hall, a hundred metres long and sixteen metres high, dates back to the 1910s and 1920s. Vapriikki opened to the public in 1996, and the building was completed as a museum in 2000. The total floor area of the museum centre is approximately 13,000 m2, half of which consists of exhibition facilities and premises open to the public. .

What happens under the surface of the Tammerkoski rapids? Can you identify the largest animal in the Tampere region, or the rarest butterfly? Are there wolves in the forests in the Tampere region? And what is happening in our natural environment at the moment?

The Natural History Museum of Tampere offers a diverse nature experience. This exhibition presents the history of life and biological diversity in the Tampere region through our many senses, and displays topical natural phenomena.

INNOVATIONS

The Time to Play exhibition on the history of toys and play presents toys from Finland and abroad that children in Finland have played with in recent decades. The Time to Play exhibition displays about 500 toys.

Treasures of the Toy Box

The Finnish Civil War, between the Red Guard and the White Guard, was a short but traumatic period in Finnish history. The largest inland battle in Northern Europe prior to World War II took place in Tampere, in April 1918.

THE FINNISH HOCKEY HALL OF FAME

Tampere, the capital of the Finnish shoe industry, presents the story of shoe-manufacturing in Finland. In the Vapriikki Shoe Museum’s factory room, you can follow the various stages of the industrial manufacture of shoes, from the design table to the finished product. Authentic film footage will take you into the world of a busy shoe factory. Ankle boots, sandals or boots – in the procession of a thousand shoes you will find your own favourites.

Conferences at Vapriikki:

The museum restaurant Valssi serves lunch at 11am–2pm on weekdays and at 12–3pm on weekends. Valssi also serves coffees, and you can hold private functions here in accordance with your wishes. A magnificent view of the industrial red brick scenery along the Tammerkoski rapids opens from the restaurant’s summer terrace, built above running water.

Vapriikki premises can be rented for private functions, conferences and seminars. Conference guests are served by a fully equipped auditorium seating 111, while a smaller meeting can be comfortably arranged in an elegant sauna cabinet.
