PROFESSIONAL: FLU(X) ARCHITECTURE + DESIGN
AN ADDITION TO THE SCHROEDER HOUSE BY GERRIT RIETVELD SERVING AS A MUSEUM FOR THE HOUSE. THIS PROJECT SOUGHT TO UNDERSTAND THE DESIGN CONCEPTS OF AN ICONIC HOUSE BY ANALYZING IT AND DESIGNING AN ADDITION BASED ON AN INTERPRETATION OF THOSE CONCEPTS. THE SCHROEDER HOUSE ADDITION IS BASED ON THE STAGGERING, OFFSETTING, AND STEPPING OF PLANES TO CREATE AND SHAPE INTERSTITIAL SPACES.

STRUCTURE/PARTITIONS PROGRAM
HOW CAN THE STAGGERING,OFFSETTING, AND STEPPINGOF PLANES CREATE SPACE BYTRANSFORMING A PRESETRECTANGULAR VOLUME?
FINAL DESIGN
A FACULTY CLUB FOR THE ORIGINAL CAMPUS OF EMORY UNIVERSITY IN OXFORD, GEORGIA. THE SITE IS SITUATED BETWEEN A NATURE PRESERVE ON THE EAST AND THE QUAD ON THE WEST. TO THE NORTH AND SOUTH ARE THE LIBRARY AND THE GYM. THE ONLY ENTRANCE TO THE SEVERAL NATURE TRAILS IN THE PRESERVE IS AT THE BACK OF THE SITE, NEXT TO THE GYM. LOCATED IN A RURAL AREA AND SURROUNDED BY UNTOUCHED NATURE THE CAMPUS WAS MEANT TO BE “A TEMPLE IN TREES.” AS THE CAMPUS GREW, THE “TEMPLE IN TREES” BECAME A TEMPLE NEXT TO THE TREES. THIS PROJECT SEEKS TO BRIGDE THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT AND THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT THROUGH TRANSPARENCIES AND THE LAYERING OF THRESHHOLDS. THE PROGRAM INCLUDES A CAFE, A DINING AND KITCHEN AREA, A LIBRARY, SEVERAL SPORTS AREAS, AND BEDROOMS FOR GUEST PROFESSORS.

PRUIT-IGOE PARK IS A COMMUNITY CAMPUS THAT TRIGGERS ECONOMIC AND POPULATION GROWTH IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD WHILE PROVIDING FOR ITS CURRENT AND FUTURE CITIZENS. THE CENTER IS COMPRISED OF THREE TYPES OF MODULAR NODES AND TISSUES: “EDUCATION,” “CONNECTION” “AND “RECREATION.” THESE SPACES ARE UNIQUELY DESIGNED TO BE SELF SUSTAINING IN EACH PHASE OF THE PROPOSAL, ENSURING FLEXIBLE GROWTH THAT FOLLOWS THE GROWTH OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD ITSELF. THE MANIPULATION OF THE GROUND CREATES SPACES WHERE “RECREATION” AND “EDUCATION” PROGRAMS CAN TAKE PLACE. IT ALSO SHAPES THE SURFACE WHICH BECOMES THE “CONNECTION.”

THE PHYSICAL CONNECTION IS MANIPULATED TO CREATE MORE PROGRAM SPACE

CARVING OUT VIEWS:
THE NEW PROGRAM SPACE IS CARVED TO CREATE VIEWS TO THE SURROUNDING NEIGHBORHOOD
THIS INTERNATIONL COMPETITION FOR PROFESSIONAL ARCHITECTS WAS HELD BY THE RIO DE JANEIRO MUNICIPAL GOVERNMENT IN A PARTNERSHIP WITH THE UIA AND THE BRAZILIAN INSTITUTE FOR ARCHITECTS IN RIO DE JANEIRO (IAB-RJ) FROM MAY TO JULY OF 2011. THE OLYMPIC PARK WILL HOST SEVERAL SPORTS SUCH AS TENNIS, SYNCRONIZED SWIMMING, DIVING, HOCKEY, TABLE TENNIS, AND MANY MORE. THE PARK WILL ALSO HOLD THE LIVE SITE WHERE FANS CAN WATCH ACTIVITIES HAPPENING OUTSIDE THE PARK, THE SPONSOR’S VILLAGE, AND SOME ATHLETIC QUARTERS AND PRACTICE AREAS.

ONCE A VISITOR ENTERS THE SITE, CIRCULATION BECOMES LIKE A RIVER, WHERE THE GEOMETRY OF THE PROGRAM ELEMENTS CREATES A LANDSCAPE FOR VISITORS TO FLOW AROUND. CONTINUING DOWN THE SITE, PLAZAS EMERGE ON THE SITE LIKE PONDS, AS THEY ACT AS COLLECTORS FOR VISITORS TO GATHER AND ENJOY BEFORE AND AFTER THE EVENTS. SITE ELEMENTS BECOME PUSHED TOWARDS THE LAGOON IN ORDER TO ESTABLISH A CONNECTION WITH THENATURAL ENVIRONMENT. THE SPONSOR’S VILLAGE, IN THE CENTER OF THE SITE, BECOMES A CONNECTOR BETWEEN THE WELCOME CENTER, TO THE NORTH AND THE AQUATIC CENTER AREA TO THE SOUTH. THIS CONFIGURATION IS SIMILAR TO A SHOPPING MALL, WITH ANCHOR STORES ON EACH END CONNECTED BY AVENUES LINED WITH SMALLER SHOPS. A SERVICE CAMPUS ON THE NORTHWEST SIDE OF THE SITE PROVIDES WATER, SEWER, SOLID WASTE, ANDENERGY SERVICE TO THE SITE AND IS SIZED TO ACCOMMODATE BOTH THE OLYMPIC AND LEGACY MODE.
OUR DESIGN REPRESENTS INNOVATION AND EXPERIMENTATION IN PARK DESIGN, EVENT SHOWCASE, AND URBAN FORM WHILE EMBRACING THE WONDER OF THE BRAZILIAN SPIRIT. WE BEGIN WITH AN ANALYSIS OF RIO AND THE REGION’S BEAUTIFUL AND EXTREME LANDSCAPES. WE STUDIED EXISTING TRANSPORTATION NODES, THE NETWORK OF OLYMPIC VENUES, THE MAJOR NEIGHBORHOODS OF THE CITY, AND THE KEY ELEMENTS WITHIN THE BARRA AREA. THIS ANALYSIS LED TO AN INHERENT SERIES OF SITE FORCES FROM THE MAJOR TRANSPORTATION NODES AS WELL AS THE ADJACENT MOUNTAIN LANDSCAPES ON BOTH THE EAST ANDWEST SIDE OF THE SITE. THESE FORCES LED TO THE CREATION OF FORMAL STUDIES SIMILAR TO A SERIES OF CONTOUR LINES WORKING DOWN TOWARDS THE LAGOON. THESE LINES, AS THEY CONTINUE DOWN FROM THE NORTH END OF THE SITE, CONVERGE TOWARDS THE CENTER, CREATING VIEWS TOWARDS THE MAJOR LANDSCAPE ELEMENTS. THE LINES THUS BECOME A ROAD AND PATHWAY SYSTEM WHEREIN THE PROGRAM ELEMENTS ARE SITUATED.
THIS PROJECT WAS DESIGNED BY JORGE BAZAN, JUA ARCHILA, CHRIS SHERN, AND MEREDITH BAZAN. THE DESIGN PROPOSED TO PRESERVE AND RESTORE THE HISTORIC FAÇADE OF THE MARKET WHILE ADDING CONTEMPORARY DESIGN ELEMENTS.
THE 1’0”= 1/8” SCALE MODEL WAS FABRICATED BY VANESSA LIRA AS A STUDY OF THE DESIGN PROPOSAL. CHIPBOARD, MUSEUM BOARD, PLEXIGLAS, MDF, AND ABS PLASTIC WERE USED AS THE FABRICATION MATERIALS. THE MODEL PIECES WERE FIRST CREATED THROUGH THE MANIPULATTION OF AN ORIGINAL RHINO FILE USING RHINO AND GRASSHOPPER, THEN FABRICATED USING A LASER CUTTER AND A 3D PRINTER.

THIS PROJECT WAS DESIGNED BY JORGE BAZAN, JUA ARCHILA, AND JULIAN TORRES. THIS HIGH-END RESIDENCE IS LOCATED IN QUERETARO, MEXICO.
THE 1:50 SCALE MODEL WAS FABRICATED BY VANESSA LIRA AS A STUDY AND A PRESENTATION TOOL OF THE DESIGN. CHIPBOARD AND WOOD WERE USED AS THE FABRICATION MATERIALS. THE MODEL PIECES WERE FIRST CREATED THROUGH THE MANIPULATION OF AN ORIGINAL RHINO FILE, THEN FABRICATED BY A LASER CUTTER AND BY HAND.
