The existing roundabout will be upgraded to a four-way signalised intersection with on-road cycle lanes and safer crossings for pedestrians. A review of the roundabout at Vanderlin Drive and Lee Point Road identified that it has reached its capacity. Long queues have been observed on Vanderlin Drive, with minor queuing on Lee Point Road during peak hours at the roundabout. Community members provided feedback that they feel the intersection does not cater for cyclists and pedestrians. In a community consultation survey conducted in late 2020, more than 50 per cent of survey respondents said that they tend to avoid the roundabout due to congestion and safety concerns. The Department appointed local engineering firm SMEC to lead the planning study and develop a preferred concept. Seven options were considered including an upgraded roundabout, a signalised roundabout and an overpass option. The final concept, a four-way signalised intersection, will deliver the following benefits: Reduces the overall queue lengths and delays Improves safety for all users, including pedestrians and cyclists Caters for future developments Improves the cyclist network through the intersection. An artist impression is included overleaf to show the key features of the final concept design. The project will now move to detailed design with construction likely to commence in 2022. The upgrades are funded under the Australian Government’s Road Safety Program. If you have any questions or feedback about the design, please contact 08 8924 7118 or [email protected]
