A 4-year-old boy in Vanderhoof was injured in a crash with a vehicle while riding his bike down 4th Street East and Riley Avenue.

The accident occurred at about 3 p.m. Thursday after-noon in the school zone near Evelyn Dickson elementary school. The 22-year-old male was driving west when the boy

appeared from the south and failed to stop at the stop sign while coming down the hill.

The boy suffered serious injuries to his face and head and was taken to St. John Hospital and then taken to University Hospital of Northern BC.

His older brother, age nine, stopped by the RCMP detach-ment to thank the of� cers for their quick response and to inform them that his brother was released from hospital with a few stitches.

Several witnesses came forward immediately to help the

boy, placing towels under his head around a pool of blood. The mother was close by to assist him as well.

“Its really important for people, especially children, to be wearing their helmets,” said RCMP Sgt. Jason Keays.

The areas of the child that were struck when he received the injuries would have been covered had he been wearing a helmet added one RCMP of� cer. Although it may not have prevented the injury it certainly would have lessened it.

Neither speed nor alcohol were deemed a factor and the driver is not being charged with anything at this time.

Child seriously injured in vehicle accident

Former Vanderhoof resident, Jo-seph Knelsen, has pleaded guilty to charge of second-degree murder as of Monday, June 3.

Knelsen was charged with the � rst-degree murder of Gordon Berg of Langford, B.C.

According to the Times Colonist, Crown prosecutor Tamara Hodge described the night of the murder in “chilling” detail to a jury on May 27.

Gordon Berg and his girlfriend, Laura Carey, were in the bedroom when a masked man burst through the window spraying bear mace. Carey � ed upstairs and hid with the home-owner, Shannon Henson, in the up-per suite, believing Berg to be right behind her. Carey and Henson hid in the locked bedroom while the assail-ant hammered on it.

“They see a hammer coming through that door,” said Hodge in court. “Shannon opens the door to a man whose face is obscured. He is holding a hammer and he is cov-ered in blood. The man grabs her by

the throat. That’s when Shannon and Laura recognize the accused.”

The 53-year-old Gordon Berg was found dead in the downstairs kitchen, reports the Times Colonist. He had been hit at least 10 times in the head and stabbed � ve times.

On May 28, evidence and pho-tographs were shown to the jury by RCMP forensic identi� cation of� cer Sgt. Nav Hothi who spent two days examining the crime scene.

The jury was shown evidence ranging from the battered and bloody doors to the screwdriver, hammer, knives, Vise-Grips, and homemade mask in court on Tuesday. They were also shown pictures of blood on the foyer, on the bannister and the stairs.

After the bail hearing in May 2011, Knelsen was released on a $100,000 surety bail and moved back to Vanderhoof to live with his mother. He was not allowed to leave without a family member unless he was going to work. Nor was he allowed to con-sume alcohol or leave the province.

Vanderhoof has long been in need of a new post-secondary educational facility and that time will come within the next � ve years. This time last year, the Col-lege of New Caledonia submitted their capital plan which included a new Vanderhoof campus.

The new college campus will be a 40,000 square foot purpose-built facility designed to hold over 200 full-time students, more than double the current stu-dents in Vanderhoof.

The current facility operates out of a building leased that was part of St. John Hospital and the problems with the facility are many.

“It’s not a college campus facility, it’s not designed to be that,” said John Bowman, president of the Col-lege of New Caledonia. “[It’s] ancient, classroom space is inadequate, too small, there is no space for student activities, it’s cost us a lot to operate because it’s a very old building and the community and college need and aspire to something better.”

The new campus will include real classrooms, trades training shops, computer labs, gathering space, of� ces and other spaces to accommodate the increase in student population.

Bowman added that he believed Vanderhoof to be “the least well served” community in the CNC region even though hundreds of thousands of dollars has been spent maintaining the campus.

The next step to getting the new campus � nished will be to receive a funding commitment from the pro-vincial government, this is expected to happen within the next year or two. The campus is expected to cost $15 million plus operating fees.

At the same time, a contractor has been hired to scout out a number of preferred sites to build the cam-pus, they will then submit those sites to the government within the next two months.

“We’re hopeful that MLA John Rustad and his col-leagues will be supportive of making a capital invest-ment and additional funding required for the campus to meet the needs of the community,” said Bowman.

The educational plan to be offered at the new cam-

pus is being put together by people from the com-munity. According to Bowman, the educational advisory committee is made up of “industry rep-resentatives, � rst nations, representatives from the community, major in-dustry, municipality, and development agencies.” So everyone from the community is involved in assuring the college offers the right programs at the right time.

Vanderhoof Mayor Gerry Thiessen shared his thoughts on the opening of a new college facility.

“It’s an absolute ne-cessity,” he said. “No-body is going to attract workers into the commu-nity, no industry is going to come unless they know that there’s people who have been educated and trained in the trades and technical � elds.”

Kal-Tire is one of the few recycling facilities in the community. Their goal is to increase collection rates for used oil, antifreeze, and scrap tires.

“The BCUOMA is a non-pro� t or-ganization that promotes and encour-ages B.C. residents to recycle their used oil antifreeze � lters and contain-ers and dispose of them properly in a way that is environmentally friendly,” said Fridman.

“We’re spreading the message about used oil antifreeze and tire re-cycling ..just to let them know that

The ambassadors were hoping to speak with the manager of Kal-Tire to get feedback about the pro-gram and to see where they keep their used tires, how many they have and what condition they’re in but the manager wasn’t in.

Both BCUOMA and TSBC are non-pro� t orga-nizations dedicated to cleaning up the province and minimizing contamination of the environment.

The Vanderhoof RCMP were called to the St. John Hospital on June 5 to investi-gate bones that had been found by the parking lot construc-tion crew.

“It was during the excavation for the construction at the hospital,” said Sgt. Jason Keays, Vander-hoof RCMP. “They were doing some dig-ging and found what looked to be human skeletal bones.”

The bones were found only about three feet down while the construction crews were digging in the topsoil.

The bones were seized by the RCMP and the Coroner’s Ser-vice and construction halted at the site.

A forensic anthro-pologist was then called in who deter-mined the bones to be animal not human.

Dr. Bret Batchelor, of the Omineca Medical Clinic, recently completed a year of Enhanced Surgical Skills training at the University of Sas-katchewan. This training is essential for doctors to maintain their pro� ciency and keep up to date with current practices.

The surgical skills training is essential for the St. John Hospital as well. Without it, not enough doctors can be around to work in the operating room, which is one of the extremely few operat-ing rooms to be found in northern B.C.

“It’s actually an incredible privilege in Canada right now to have something like this,” he said. “It’s very unique, there’s only 11 sub-sites in B.C. right now.”

Without the training, the operating room wouldn’t be in operation frequently enough, without operations it would close. If it closed then there would be less doctors in Vanderhoof. So it’s a cycle that, thankfully, is being addressed by sending doctors such as Batchelor to surgical training programs.

“Basically it’s a year-long training program, six months focused on surgery and six months focused on obstetrics and gynecology,” said Dr. Batchelor. “It’s intense surgical training speci� cally geared towards people that work in rural areas.”

The training program allows Batchelor to per-form a number of things he couldn’t before and keeps the room in use. Only a couple of local doc-tors use the operating room a couple times a week, the rest of the time is taken up by doctors traveling from Prince George or elsewhere.

Having maternity services, being able to deliv-

er babies, in a small town is the point of focussing on rural areas. Without the training, there would be no operating room in Vanderhoof, and no pos-sibility of Caesarean sections.

“This will allow it to provide a better service to the community, and Vanderhoof is a good ex-ample of that. We have 14 or 15 physicians now and it’s because we have that operating room… it also allows the doctors here to do a larger breadth of practice and to do it safely.”

Dr. Batchelor was born and raised in the South Okanagan and came to Vanderhoof, a place he had never heard of, as a trainee. He has never once considered living anywhere else.

Federated Co-operatives Limited (FCL), on behalf of local Co-ops that make up the Co-operative Retailing System, knows it is important to do what’s possible to make children and families feel at home while in hospital. That’s why FCL is making an historic gift of $5 million over � ve years to the � ve children’s hospital foundations in Western Canada. The gift is also the � rst time that the � ve children’s hospital foun-dations have received a single donation to be shared between them.

For nearly a century, Co-ops have built their reputations on being the local busi-ness that cares about people and communi-ties, partnering with others that hold similar values in support of causes that matter to each of us, says FCL CEO Scott Banda.

“Like you, we care about our children, our families and our communities,” Banda told an audience gathered in Saskatoon and via web broadcast to sites in Winnipeg, Re-gina, Calgary, Edmonton and Victoria. “At the end of the day nothing says ‘you’re at home’ more than children and family. That is why we support the � ve children’s hospi-tal foundations and the work they are doing to provide an environment that offers com-

passion and support to children and their families during some of the most dif� cult times in their lives.”

Of the $5 million, B.C. Children’s Hos-pital Foundation receives $550,000; Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation in Calgary, $825,000; Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation in Edmonton, $825,000; Chil-dren’s Hospital Foundation of Saskatche-wan, $1.7 million; and The Children’s Hos-pital Foundation of Manitoba, $1.1 million. The money was divided using a formula developed by FCL to allocate fairly region-wide gifts of this nature, and was agreed to by all parties. The money to the Saskatch-ewan and Manitoba foundations is in addi-tion to money already raised from Co-op/Rider and Co-op/Bomber “Game Day Ap-proved” co-branded products.

In response, the � ve Children’s Hospi-tal Foundations thanked FCL and retail Co-ops for their generosity.

Teri Nicholas, President and CEO, B.C. Children’s Hospital Foundation, said, “FCL and retail Co-ops’ support for our Foundation will have a direct impact on children and families in every community in British Columbia.”

Drug charges laid in FSJOn June 6th, 2013, members of the RCMP

Crime Reduction Unit were investigating a suspi-cious occurrence in a wooded area near downtown Fort St. James. A male was then reportedly located in possession of crack cocaine and other drug para-phernalia. Donald Service has since been charged with possession of cocaine for the purpose of traf-� cking and will appear in court on September 10, 2013.

On May 31 at 1:30 p.m., RCMP were called to a possible � ght at Petro Canada in Fort St. James.

A male was reportedly assaulting a female, and upon arrival, RCMP found the male suspect to be behaving in a way which endangered his or others’ safety.

The man was then taken into custody under the Mental Health Act and taken to Stuart Lake Hospi-tal for assessment by a physician.

The man was then sent on to Prince George for further treatment.

On June 1 at 11:12 p.m., RCMP were called to

assist the � re department at Stuart Drive and Ash Street.

Someone had reportedly thrown a molotov cocktail-type device onto the road, which was sub-sequently burning.

The bottle was on the street and the � re de-partment suppressed the � re, but RCMP are ask-ing anyone with information related to the inci-dent to call Fort St. James RCMP at 996-8269 or Crimestoppers, as the incident created a serious risk to public safety.

Five students from NVSS participated in the 42nd Annual High School Provin-cial Track and Field Championships in Langley on May 31 and June 1. Coach Brian Nemethy took Emma Floris, Mat-thew Ebert, Charlie Borek, Alexander Nemethy and Julia Steinebach to Lang-ley. Many of the stu-dents came back with new personal bests. Matthew Ebert placed highest of the � ve students earn-ing eighth place in the grade eight and nine category of dis-cus throw. He threw a one kilogram discus 33.91 metres.

Dear Editor

It took till Sunday night that I found humor in a “mistake” printed in last week’s Omineca Express at my expense. I had a good belly laugh.

Being too serious a guy and from the “old school”, my handwritten letter to the editor was just too much for our press staff.

Yet, on a Hooterville Hoot weekend the misspelling “gas move-ment” was appropriate.

Premier Christy Clark introduced her next Executive Council to British Columbians on Fri-day, June 7. Clark added two new ministries, appoint-ing 19 ministers in total.

“This is an ex-citing moment for British Columbia,” said Premier Clark. “British Columbi-ans have asked us to build a strong economy, a secure tomorrow, and a lasting legacy for generations. We will deliver.”

The premier’s nominees will be formally sworn in on June 10 by the Lieutenant Governor Judith Guichon.

Nechako Lakes MLA John Rustad will be responsible for the ministry of aboriginal relations and reconciliation.

The other ministers are as fol-lows: Fort Langley-Aldergrove MLA Rich Coleman will still be the deputy premier and minister of housing and will also be respon-sible for the ministry of natural gas development.

Amrik Virk, MLA of Surrey-Tynehead, will be the new minis-ter of advanced educa-tion.

Peace River North MLA Pat Pimm will replace Norm Letnick as the new agriculture minister.

S u r r e y - C l o v e r -dale MLA Stephanie Cadieux will be the minister of children and family develop-

ment.Cariboo North MLA Coralee

Oakes will be the minister of com-munity, sport and cultural develop-ment.

Surrey-Fleetwood MLA Peter Fassbender will be the new education minister tasked to work on the con-tract settlement with teachers in B.C.

Kootenay East MLA Bill Ben-nett will be the new energy, mines and core review minister.

Langley MLA Mary Polak will be the new minister of environ-ment.

North Vancouver-Lonsdale MLA Naomi Yamamoto is now the minister of state for tourism and small business. She will assist Shir-ley Bond.

Vancouver-Fraserview MLA Suzanne Anton will become the minister of justice and the attorney-general.

Comox Valley MLA Don McRae will become the minister of social development and social in-novation.

Vancouver-Quilchena MLA Andrew Wilkinson is the minister of technology, innovation and citi-zens’ services.

Kamloops-South Thompson MLA Todd Stone will be minister of transportation and infrastructure as well as deputy house leader.

One has to wonder when B.C. Court of Appeal judges volunteered in their community?

If they did, they would understand there is an extremely short sup-ply of individuals who willingly give up their own time to help orga-nizations around them. And it’s increasingly dif� cult to get people to lend a hand as life seems to get busier.

So what did the B.C. Court of Appeals do? They have made it more dif� cult for groups to attract volunteers by declaring that elect-ed of� cials are in con� ict of interest when participating in a non-pro� t society that receives civic funding.

In Enderby, there has already been one casualty as Coun. Brad Case has resigned from his role with the chamber of commerce.

That’s unfortunate as Case brought a wealth of business and com-munity experience to the chamber. And, in turn, he could provide knowledge about the chamber’s inner workings to his council col-leagues.

Many communities, and particularly small ones, don’t have the luxury of differentiating between people who sit on municipal coun-cil or regional district and those who volunteer with a service agency or business group. Often multiple hats are worn.

Yes con� ict of interest can occur but there is provincial legislation that clearly outlines the guidelines. And the simple solution is for a politician not to be involved in the discussion on a group they belong to, particularly if that organization receives public funding.

The provincial government needs to review the court ruling and make changes to legislation to ensure con� icts are avoided while al-lowing volunteerism to continue.

The youth of Vanderhoof’s handful of 4-H clubs got together to judge each others’ ani-mals.There was swine, beef, horses, rabbits, dogs, lamb and poultry to judge. And the Clover-buds were judging too.

4-H rally day for Vanderhoof

The Vanderhoof district’s 4-H clubs gathered 1063.5 kilograms of food and $145 for Neighbourlink. A big thank you to the district of Vander-hoof and Fort St. James for participating in the 4-H food drive in cel-ebration of 4-H’s 100th anniversary. It is suggested the food donated to Neighbourlink will last it through the summer months into fall. Again a big thank you to all involved in making this possible.
