s baby boomers

come of age and with the increase in life expectancy

of today’s adult population, our senior population is growing at a remarkable rate. As

a result, we find that older adults consume the greatest majority of hospital services. The needs of

the hospitalized geriatric patient differ from those of the rest of the adult patient population. Seniors require specialized

care to meet their physical, emotional, and cognitive needs. In an effort to reduce costs and optimize outcomes, we

must incorporate all the principles of geriatric care into the patient’s interdisciplinary plan of care. Simple, back-to-the-basics nursing

interventions can make a profound impact on

our patients.
