    CommoDoRE NoTEs

The 2012 Commodores are out performing the 4-5 Commodores of a year ago – a squad that eventually made its way to the Liberty Bowl. A comparison of current NCAA stats indicates the 2012 Commodores are improved in most offensive and defensive categories over James Franklin's initial squad in 2011. The one-game improvement this season in overall record is simply the most obvious stat that shows the 2012 team to be better than the 2011 squad. Quite simply, the 2012 Commodores are producing more points, total yards and first downs on offense and fewer points, yards and first downs on defense. This year, the Commodores are averaging 58.4 more yards of offense. The increase is across the board: 44.5 passing yards and 13.9 rushing yards. The improved production has the Commodores posting4.1 more first downs this season. The 2012 team also is averaging .8 more points despite the fact that it registered more defensive touchdowns last year. The 2012 offense is averaging 5.7 yards per play, an 0.4-yard improvement over last year. On defense, the 2012 'Dores also are faring better than a 2011 unit that ranked among the most improved defenses in the nation. The 2012 defense has registered two shutouts for the first time in nearly 50 years. The unit is allowing 17.1 points a game, 6.0 points less than last year. The unit also is giving up 24.4 fewer total yards, much less passing yards, and 2.3 fewer first downs than a year ago. The defense is limiting opponents to 4.8 yards per play, .2 yards less than last year. The 'Dores are converting a higher percentage of third downs on offense, and forcing more fourth downs on defense. The '12 squad also has more sacks – and is allowing less sacks by opposing defenses. The 2012 Commodores also are getting flagged for 14.9 fewer yards in penalties than a year ago. Turnovers have been the biggest difference in the 2011 and 2012 teams. This year, Vanderbilt has been one of the nation's best in limiting turnovers, committing just 13 this season after having 21 turnovers through nine games last year. The improved ball security has not translated to improved turnover margin because the 'Dores have forced fewer turnovers this season.

The Vanderbilt defense is on pace to allow the fewest total points in nearly 40 years. At the same time, the Commodore offense is contending for a similar accomplishment. The Commodore defense, coming off its second shutout of the season, is allowing just 17.1 points per game. The current average is six points less than a year ago, and approaching the team's season best for scoring defense (16.6 ppg in 1974) since the 1960s. The unit also has impressed in total defense. It is allowing 316.2 yards, which would be the team's best season performance since 1999 (315.5 ypg). The Commodore offense is averaging 25.4 points on offense. That average ranks fifth best since the 1960s and is just 1.8 points off the 2005 total that ranks as the Commodore high mark since the 1960s.

Jordan Matthews (Jr., WR) has established himself as one of the Southeastern Conference's most productive receivers. Matthews ranks second in the SEC with 61 catches, trailing only Cobi Hamilton of Arkansas. Matthews' 94.4-yard receiving average also ranks second in the SEC behind Hamilton. Matthews has 850 receiving yards on the season. Matthews tops all SEC receivers in conference action. He is averaging 101.5 receiving yards in six SEC games. Matthews had five catches for 75 yards and one touchdown in the win over Kentucky one week after setting a career high with 10 receptions vs. UMass. The junior also has entered the Vanderbilt career Top Ten in receiving yardage. His 1,814-yard total ranks seventh all-time. He needs 164 yards to overtake Clarence Sevillian (1989-92) into sixth place. The junior has surpassed 100 receiving yards in four games this year. He had 147 yards against South Carolina, 131 yards against Florida, 119 yards at Georgia and 112 yards vs. UMass. Matthews also has three games of eight receptions or more. Matthews has surpassed 100 receiving yards in six of his last 14 games. During that span, Matthews is averaging 100.4 receiving yards. Matthews' 147-yard receiving total vs. South Carolina ranks as the program's third highest total in a season opener. The effort vs. South Carolina included a 78-yard TD catch, the team's longest pass play since the Duke game in 2010.

Two weeks after becoming the Commodores' all-time leading rusher, Zac Stacy (Sr., RB) took ownership of another team record against Kentucky with his 26th rushing touchdown. Stacy had 69 yards on 11 carries in Vanderbilt's 40-0 victory at Kentucky, pushing his career rushing total to 2,754 yards. His 2-yard plunge in the second quarter was the 26th of his career, pushing Stacy past Dean Davidson (1947-50) for the most rushing TDs by a Commodore. Stacy became the team's all-time rushing leader on Oct. 20 during a sensational 169-yard performance in Vanderbilt's 17-13 victory over Auburn. Stacy matched his single-game high against a Southeastern Conference opponent during the record-breaking effort, tying his perfor-mance against Ole Miss last year. Stacy ranks sixth in the SEC with 683 rushing yards on 131 carries. He is averaging 5.2 yards per rush and has the longest carry in team history – an 86-yarder for TD vs. Presbyterian. An All-SEC performer in 2011, Stacy is the SEC's active leading career rusher with 2,754 yards. He has a 77-yard lead over South Carolina's Marcus Lattimore, who suffered a serious injury Oct. 27 vs. Tennessee. Stacy needs just one more TD to become the team's all-time leading scorer. He and Davidson top the list with 26 career TDs. Stacy's 5.3-yard career rushing average easily ranks as the highest among Vanderbilt's Top Ten all-time rushers. He still has 30 fewer rush attempts than Frank Mordica, the team's No. 2 all-time rusher. Stacy has eight games of 100+ rushing yards in his career. He is tied with Mordica for second in this category, trailing only Jermaine Johnson, who had 11 games of 100+ rushing yards from 1993-95. The Commodores have enjoyed plenty of success when Stacy reaches the 100-yard rushing mark, going 7-1 overall.

Crowds are coming out to see the Commodores play in 2012. Sellout crowds have enjoyed the Commodores' consecutive games in Vanderbilt Stadium against Florida and Auburn. It marks the first time in 16 seasons that Vanderbilt has played before successive sellouts in Nashville. The last time the Commodores sold out consecutive games came at the start of the 1996 season when Vanderbilt hosted Notre Dame and Ole Miss in September outings. Last week, a crowd of 32,227 attended Vanderbilt's homecoming game against MAC member UMass. The two sellouts come after the Vanderbilt hosted the largestcrowd for a home opener in more than a decade when the 'Dores and South Carolina squared off on Aug. 30. An announced audience of 38,393 cheered for the Commodores in the opener, the largest crowd to view a Vanderbilt season opener since 39,885 fans entered the turnstiles to watch MTSU and Vanderbilt in 2001. notes FroM the win over kentucky ★ Vanderbilt was superb in third-down situations against the Wildcats. On offense, the Commodores converted on 65 percent of their third downs (11-of-17). It was the offense's best performance this year in the category. The defense limited Kentucky to just five conversions of 17 third-down attempts (29%). The Vanderbilt offense was 8-of-10 on third downs while building a 27-0 halftime lead. ★ It marked the eighth time during Head Coach James Franklin's 22-game tenure that the Commodores have won with a margin of victory of more than 21 points. ★ The Commodores were well-balanced on offense, getting 227 rushing yards and 220 passing yards. The 447 total yards by the Vanderbilt offense was the most against an SEC opponent since the 'Dores produced 462 yards against Arkansas on Oct. 29, 2011. ★ The Commodore defense held its third-straight opponent below 275 total yards. Kentucky managed only 260 total yards. This season, Vanderbilt has held two other SEC opponents under 300 total yards: South Carolina, 272 yards; and Auburn, 212 yards. ★ Vanderbilt produced a season high of 29 first downs. It was the highest first down total by the Commodores against an SEC team since QB Jay Cutler helped amass 30 first downs against Kentucky on Nov. 12, 2005. ★ Vanderbilt reached 40 points for the second consecutive game. It marked the first time since late in the 2005 season that Vanderbilt put at least 40 points on the scoreboard in back-to-back games. ★ Jonathan Krause (Jr., WR) continues to show improvement as the team's punt return specialist. Krause averaged 9.8 yards on four returns, including a 17-yard effort. He also was hit prematurely on two other punts, resulting in 30 penalty yards against the 'Cats. ★ The Commodores' 27-0 halftime lead is the largest lead at intermission over an SEC opponent since a 35-0 lead over Kentucky in 1969. That game ended in a 42-6 Vandy win. ★ Jordan Rodgers (R-Sr., QB) eclipsed 3,000 career passing yards with his 34-yard TD pass to Jordan Matthews (Jr., WR). It was Rodgers' 15th career TD pass. He has 3,202 passing yards as a Commodore. Rodgers was 18-of-29 for 220 yards and 2 TDs. He has been remarkably consistent this year – completing at least 13 passes and topping at least 170 passing yards in all eight starts. Rodgers ranks sixth in the SEC in passing yards (209.8 per game) and seventh in total offense (218.4 yards). ★ Jared Morse (Jr., DT) gave the defense an early lift with a 6-yard quarterback sack that stymied the Wildcats' opening possession. The play gave Morse three straight games with at least one tackle for loss. ★ A pair of junior safeties, Kenny Ladler and Javon Marshall, paced the defensive attack with six total tackles. Ladler had six solo stops, including a tackle for loss. ★ The 'Dores running backs mirrored the overall balance of the offensive attack. Four different backs – Zac Stacy (Sr.), Wesley Tate (R-Jr.), Brian Kimbrow (Fr.) and Warren Norman (R-Jr.) – carried the football at least eight times. Stacy and Kimbrow paced the rushing attack with 69 yards. Stacy's 23-yard TD was the 26th of his career, giving him sole possession of the all-time record for career rushing TDs. ★ Chris Boyd (R-So., WR) topped Commodore receivers with six catches and 81 receiving yards. He added a 30-yard TD catch. Matthews added solid support with five receptions, good for 75 yards and a 34-yard TD hookup. Both Boyd and Matthews have posted catches in 17 consecutive games. ★ Vanderbilt owned a season-best advantage in time of possession. Vanderbilt had an eight-minute advantage in the possession stats (34:33-25:27). The last time the Commodores controlled more possession was in a similar convincing win over Kentucky in 2011. ★ Wesley Tate (R-Jr., RB) has now scored a rushing touchdown in three straight games. He has five rushing TDs on the season. ★ The 33-yard run for a score by Brian Kimbrow (Fr., RB) was his team-best fourth rush of 30-plus yards. He had runs of 74, 49 and 39 yards entering the game. ★ Vanderbilt took its opening drive of the game for a score for the fourth time this season. The 'Dores also did so against Northwestern, Pxresbyterian and Auburn.

kent aMong sec's best punters Fifth-year senior punter Richard Kent is performing at an All-Southeastern Conference level. And there's no other league in the NCAA that approaches the quality of punting witnessed in the SEC. Kent is enjoying one of the finest seasons ever by a Vanderbilt punter. His 45.1-yard average ranks third in the SEC behind Kyle Christy of Florida (47.8 yards) and Arkansas' Dylan Breeding (46.2 yards). Kent's average ranks ninth in the nation. If Kent continues his current form, he will finish with the fourth best single-season punting average in team history. Kent was recognized as the SEC's Co-Specialist of the Week Oct. 6 for his effort in the Vanderbilt win at Missouri. The SEC is loaded with punters. Six of the NCAA's top 22 punters hail from the conference. Kent's net punting average of 40.0 yards also ranks among the NCAA leaders. Opponents have returned just 13 of Kent's 38 punts this season, totalling 100 yards. Kent has 12 punts of 50 yards or more, including a 67-yarder at Northwestern which ranks as the SEC's third longest punt this season. While 33% of his punts have landed inside the opponent 20-yard line, just three have been touchbacks. Kent has been remarkably consistent. He has placed at least one punt inside the opponent's 20-yard line in 31 of 34 career appearances. He also has boomed punts of 48 or more yards in 15 of his last 16 games.

The Goodlettsville (Tenn.) Little League all-star team earned one of the loudest ovations Aug. 30 in Vanderbilt Stadium. Fans from Vanderbilt and South Carolina gave the Goodlettsville youngsters and their coaching staff a rousing standing ovation late in the second quarter. The little league team, from a small town just north of Nashville, became a national sensation in mid-August by becomingthe U.S. champion at the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa. The team faced a talented squad from Japan for the LLWS crown. The squad was joined by Vanderbilt baseball head coach Tim Corbin at the ceremony. Corbin attended three of the team's World Series games.

The Commodores honored 2012 PGA Tour FedEx Cup champion and Vanderbilt alum Brandt Snedeker during the Florida game. Snedeker captured the PGA Tour FedEx Cup by winning the season-ending Tour Championship. Snedeker's late-season finish earned him a captain's pick on the U.S. Ryder Cup squad which competed against the European team in early October. Snedeker became the first Vanderbilt golfer to either win the PGA Tour's champion or compete in a Ryder Cup match.

Jordan Rodgers (R-Sr., QB) continues to show improvement as an efficient leader in his second year as the starting Commodore signal caller. In the last month of action, the senior has produced at a very high level while eliminating mistakes that hinder offensive results. In hislast three appearances, Rodgers has completed 64.4 percent of his passes (67-of-104) and averaged 211.8 passing yards. Rodgers also has thrown just one interception in his last 107 pass attempts. Rodgers continued to show good form in the team's victory over Kentucky. He was 18-of-29 for 220 yards, with touchdown passes to Jordan Matthews (Jr., WR) and Chris Boyd (R-So., WR). Rodgers has produced a pair TD passes in each of the last two games. For the season, Rodgers is 124-of-209 for 1,678 yards and seven touchdowns. His 59.3% completion percentage is the best by a Vanderbilt signal caller since Jay Cutler was a Commodore senior in 2005. Among SEC quarterbacks with at least 175 pass attempts, Rodgers' interception total is the third fewest in the conference. Rodgers is also moving into select company among Vanderbilt quarterbacks. He ranks seventh all-time career total offense, amassing3,680 yards (3,202 passing and 478 rushing) in just 15 career starts. He is 61 total yards shy of tying Larry Smith (2008-11) for eighth place. Rodgers also ranks seventh all-time among Commodore senior QBs with 1,678 yards. He is 66 yards shy of tying John Gromos (1989) for sixth place. Wilson now ranks second all-time in the SEC in the interception returns category, trailing only former Tennessee standout Jackie Walker, who produced five TD returns from 1969-71. On Aug. 10, James Franklin surprised fourth-year player Marc Panu (FB, Mableton, Ga.) by presenting the walk-on with a full scholarship for 2012-13. Franklin broke the news to Panu in a team meeting and the moment was captured for posterity, however no one imagined the amount of attention the moment would garner. Within one week, the video of the announcement had received over 330,000 views on YouTube, while Panu and Franklin had been interviews by media outlets ranging from The Tennessean to FOX News. Panu began at Vanderbilt as a walk-on LB/DE and was named defensive scout team MVP as a freshman. In 2010, he appeared in 11 games on special teams. When Franklin arrived at Vanderbilt for the 2012 season, Panu moved to fullback and saw action in all 12 regular season games as a short-yardage blocker and special teams contributor.

Former All-Southeastern Conference linebacker Hunter Hillenmeyer is Vanderbilt's selection to the 2012 class of SEC Football Legends. Hillenmeyer, a product of Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville who went on to enjoy an eight-year career with the Chicago Bears, will be honored Nov. 30-Dec. 1 in Atlanta. Hillenmeyer topped the NCAA with 168 total tackles as a senior middle linebacker in 2002. He also paced the SEC the same year with 116 solo tackles, earning All-SEC honors. A 23-game career starter, Hillenmeyer also was a superb student-athlete. In 2002, he was selected as one of six Division I-A National Scholar Athletes by the College Football Hall of Fame and National Football Foundation. The Vanderbilt football program and athletics department has undergone several upgrades and renovations since last fall. Here's a look at some of new and improved areas on West End.

Head Coach James Franklin and the senior members of the football team unveiled the team's 2012 uniforms during a pep-rally style event at the Barnes & Noble Vanderbilt Bookstore on July 11. The stylish uniforms, designed by the Vanderbilt football staff, are made with Nike's high-tenacity Cordura knit fabric and feature black, gold and white jerseys and pants. The final piece of equipment that was shown to the crowd was a white helmet. Last season, Vanderbilt debuted a black helmet that the team wore in addition to their gold helmet. The Commodores can mix-and-match any combination of the black, gold and white elements (helmet, jersey and pants), creating 27 possible combinations.

Several key changes are incorporated in the 2012 design:•Forthefirsttimesince1994,"Vanderbilt" will be displayed on the front of Commodore jerseys. The name will be in all caps above jersey numbers.•Agold"anchor"emblemadorns the homeplate or front "V" neck of all jerseys. Last year, the Star V logo was stitched there.•"AnchorDown"textisstitched in the interior of each jersey neckline.•Nike'siconic"flywire"stitching is incorporated into the high impact shoul-der area of each jersey.•Thegoldjerseytopfea-tures black shoulder cov-erings, black lettering and black numbers. Last year, the gold jersey had white numbers.•Alljerseyshaveanupdated circular SEC patch stitched over the right breast. The Nike swoosh is over the left breast.•StarVlogoswilladorneach hip of the pants. In 2011, a lone Star V logo was located on the left front of the uniform pant.

Several upgrades have been put in to place prior to the start of the 2012 season at Vanderbilt Stadium. The most noticeable is the new video board in the north end zone of the stadium. The high definition board measures 40 x 71 feet and is one of the largest video boards in college football. In front of the video board is a new grass berm for fan seating. The berm can accommodate approximately 400 fans and provide one of the most unique seats in the country. The field itself has a new look and feel, as the old grass playing field has been replaced with a synthetic turf called Legion 46. Installed by Shaw Sportexe, the field has several new features. The redzone features the phrase "Anchor Down," an anchor logo has replaced the traditional X that marks the kickoff location and the end zones are painted black with "Vanderbilt" and "Commodores" framed by the Star-V logo. The Star-V logo remains at midfield, with Southeastern Conference logos on the 25-yard lines. In addition, new lighting has been installed at Vanderbilt Stadium. While they aren't as noticeable until nightfall, they will improve television viewing drastically while focusing more light on the field (and less in the stands), creating a more dramatic stage for Commodore football. Across Jess Neely Drive, football was one of several Vanderbilt programs to benefit from renovations and additions at the McGugin Center. New meeting rooms and a 140-seat auditorium-style classroom all adjacent to the coaches offices will benefit football, while meeting rooms have also been added to McGugin for Vanderbilt's Olympic sports.

Vanderbilt's freshman class is regarded as perhaps the most talented recruiting class ever to enroll at Vanderbilt. Four members of the class – Caleb Azubike, Darreon Herring, Brian Kimbrow and Jake Sealand – have played this season. The 2012 signing class represents the first in school history where every recruit in the class was rated three stars or better, while the group also includes four four-star players. Those four four-star players are the most recruits of that caliber to ever be in one class at Vanderbilt. In fact, Vanderbilt had signed just three four-star players in the decade prior. Of the 22 signees, 15 are nationally ranked at their position. Vanderbilt was especially successful in its home state of Tennessee, where all six recruits who are staying in their native state to become Commodores were among the top-25 players in Tennessee.
