2004ANNUAL REPORT

Page 2: Vancouver Aquarium 2004 AR

Executive Committee 2004 was a year of many "starts” – with most of the "finishes" still to come. Many

of the new activities, programs and construction projects we started last year will

change the face of the Aquarium in 2005 and beyond. As always, your Aquarium is

moving forward – not only as an amazing place to visit, but as a leader in education,

research and animal care.

The Aquarium’s world-recognized animal care expertise, built upon decades of

successful marine mammal rescue and recovery, was again confirmed. Luna,

a dislocated killer whale, took up a good deal of summer 2004 for staff like our

VP Operations and whale care expert Clint Wright, veterinarian Dave Huff and

many others. The Aquarium was called in by Fisheries and Oceans Canada to assist

with the care of Luna during a planned move from Nootka Sound, on the west coast

of Vancouver Island, back to his home range between the Canadian Gulf Islands

and the American San Juan Islands.

The effort was eventually called off, to resolve strong differences of opinion about

plans for Luna. The Aquarium is grateful, however, to the many companies and

individuals who donated funds and time to the operation. We are also extremely

proud of our staff and volunteers, who showed everyone what professional planning

and execution look like.

In 2004, some Aquarium staff moved into a temporary trailer to make way for

the re-construction and expansion of the old research wing. Thanks primarily to

$1 million donations each by long-time supporter Rudy North, and Hong Kong

businessman and Aquarium board member David Levy, construction got underway

in July and will be completed by late Spring 2005. The new Rudy North Marine

Research Centre and the Levy Marine Mammal Centre will provide modern lab-

oratories for fish rearing and marine mammal science, along with much needed,

and updated office and veterinary care space.

Later in the year, a second set of moves began as staff and volunteers vacated the

northeast corner of the Aquarium building to make way for construction of the new

Discovery Education Centre. The project, which began early in 2005, will be complet-

ed in three stages in 2006.

Other interesting “starts” included a visit by Mr. Hu Weiyong, Director of the Beijing

Aquarium, to sign a Memorandum of Understanding regarding a proposal for

a jointly operated training centre at the Beijing Aquarium.

2004 also saw the Pacific Ocean Shelf Tracking Project (POST) move from the

feasibility stage to a full-blown research program. Managed by the Vancouver

Aquarium, POST is pioneering new technology for tracking marine animals along

the continental shelf, and will help us answer key questions about their migration.

Each of these “starts” of 2004, plus many more, will play a part in keeping the

non-profit Vancouver Aquarium where it has always been – at the forefront

of aquatic conservation.
