A new program designed specifically for your budding artist, Studio Explorers provides an encouraging and supportive atmosphere as students experiment with a variety of art-making techniques. Inspired by the work of renowned Native American artist Kay WalkingStick, this season students will explore the places where we live and the traces of those who have come before us.

For our youngest pottery enthusiasts, students in this class will explore the tactile art of clay. Students will learn basic clay sculpting techniques and create projects such as pinch and coil pots, cups, sculpted clay figures, and other fun and funky vessels. For kids who love cartoons and animated movies, this class lets students become the author, director, and animator of their own personal cartoons. Students will learn traditional 2D animation as seen in Disney films and utilize Adobe After Effects, Premiere Pro, and Photoshop to make a short film.

Vacation CampsStudents will have the opportunity to be engaged and enriched with art while school is out. Taught by the Museum’s professional art educators, our camps are the perfect vacation activity for your young artist!

Pottery Camp (Ages 5–12) $125 per day; $325 for 3 days members$155 per day; $355 for 3 days nonmembersUsing ceramic clay and colorful glazes, campers will learn hand-building techniques to create both decorative and functional objects to be fired in a kiln. Students are divided into two age groups, 5–8 and 9–12. Wheel throwing will be offered for children ages 9+.

Mixed Media Mashup (Ages 5–8) $120 per day; $320 for 3 days members$150 per day; $350 for 3 days nonmembersPaint, draw, collage, sculpt, print! Campers will explore a variety of materials and techniques to create their own original works of art, inspired by those on view in the galleries.

Campers will be introduced to computer science concepts such as variables and conditional statements. Apply the highly visual language of processing (Java) and problem-solving skills to creating interactive animations.

Digital Media: Music Production (Ages 9–12) $120 members, $150 nonmembersFor aspiring songwriters, this camp teaches the basics of digital music production. Using GarageBand, campers will learn how to create, modify, and arrange sounds to create their own unique musical compositions.

Comic Camp (Ages 9–12) $120 members, $150 nonmembersDiscover the basics of comic book art from speech bubbles to storyboarding. Campers will design an imaginative character and learn foundational drawing, composition, and lettering techniques to produce their own illustrated comic.

Draw, Paint, Innovate! (Ages 5–8) $120 members, $150 nonmembersFor creative thinkers who love to experiment, this camp introduces a variety of drawing, painting, and collage techniques. Using MAM’s exhibitions as inspiration, campers will explore different media to create their own innovative masterpieces.

Students will draw from direct observation, learning the fundamental elements of line, value, form, perspective, composition, and proportion. Subject matter will vary and includes still life, landscapes, clothed figures, and sketching from the Museum’s collection.

Young Teens (Ages 12–15)

Students will be introduced to the technical and perceptual basics of oil painting. Building on the foundation of drawing and compositional skills, color mixing, paint application, and manipulating paint will be used to create form and space. They will paint from still life and use artwork in the Museum as reference.

This class is for teens who want to learn to throw pottery on the wheel. Throwing techniques for centering clay, creating bowls, and cylinder forms will be covered. In addition, students will gain a strong foundation of finishing techniques, such as glazing and texturing.

For teens of any age, this is an opportunity to study a range of fine art techniques including drawing, oil and acrylic painting, printmaking, and mixed media. Teens can refine their skills in an area of interest or try a new medium.

Bring your canvases, sketchbooks, and materials, and spend the evening with your peers creating art! This is the perfect opportunity to bring new ideas or refine your current projects started at MAM or independently. Receive feedback from other teens.

Students will delve into Adobe Photoshop, fully exploring the photo editing tools it has to offer. Students will learn to alter photographs in order to make compelling narratives and works of art. No prior experienced needed.

Older Teens (16+)

The upper level teen classes (ages 16+) are modeled on college level studio courses and develop formal skills while promoting analytical, critical, and creative thinking. This course provides an opportunity for older teens and adults to work directly from the nude figure to explore sketching the human form and anatomy. It is especially useful for students 16 and older who need life drawing experience not provided in the high school art curriculum.

High school juniors and seniors will prepare and expand on their portfolio for admission to art school, college, and university. We will examine the application process of what art programs are both in search of and requiring from your portfolio. The Gaelen Lecture will highlight artist Kay WalkingStick in conversation with Kathleen Ash-Milby. Kathleen Ash-Milby is Associate Curator at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) in New York. Kay WalkingStick is one of the best-known living Native American artists and has created iconic paintings featured in numerous exhibitions and publications.

Educators earn 2 hours of PD credit.
