Identified Need & Project Proposal• Raise awareness in practitioners about values in
practice• To explore the impact of values-based practice on:- How we identify and work with people’s strengths? - Working with risk, including positive risk-taking- Implementing and documenting person-centred care
planning (including more flexible approaches to CPA)• Develop a programme of training & practice
development that engages and builds on existing good practice

Raising Awareness of Values• Introducing what we mean by values and values-based
practice (VBP)• The importance of values diversity• Awareness of their impact on practice within a wider
context of recovery & personalisation• Communicating more explicitly through an awareness of
values-based language• Using VBP to support good process in decision-making• Values in policy (including the current impact of the
Francis Report in practice)

Francis Report into Stafford Hospital
“People must always come before numbers. Individual
patients and their treatment are what really matters.
Statistics, benchmarks and action plans are tools not ends in
themselves. They should not come before patients and their
experiences. This is what must be remembered by all those
who design and implement policy for the NHS.”
Excerpt from press release statement by Robert Francis QC in Stafford
(5/2/13)

A Focus on Practice• Working with a range of pilot teams• What does person-centred practice mean to you, and
how is it implemented?• How do you identify and work with people’s
strengths?• What informs good risk decision-making?• How can we make care planning genuinely more
person-centred?• What are the barriers to values-based practice?

Evaluations & Issues Arising• Across 6 pilot sites over 90% good & excellent ratings
were achieved for the overall programme and specific objectives (from 59 responses)
• Time and systems requirements are barriers to greater values-based practice
• A need to radically tackle the bureaucratic demands• A more flexible person-centred approach can be
achieved through consistent use of specific practice-based checklists (with emphasis in teams to be responsible for monitoring consistency of use)
