Student Life at Valpo

Classroom is only the beginning of the Valparaiso University student experience. Valpo’s vibrant campus not only offers a sense of community and inclusiveness, but it’s also the hub for:

Residence Hall Information

VU’s eight residence halls and apartment complex are home to 2000 undergraduate students. Of these residence halls, one houses members of VU's six national sororities. All first-year, sophomore, and junior students are required to live in approved University housing.

The College of Engineering is an exclusively undergraduate professional college, committed to teaching and operating in the independent Lutheran tradition of Valparaiso University.

Led by a readily accessible faculty possessing a rich and varied academic and professional practice background, the College of

EngineeringAccreditation

Valparaiso University’s undergraduate institution is currently maintaining complete accreditation in all of its engineering programs. Bachelor of Science degree programs in Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering are all accredited by the Engineering Commission of ABET.

BusinessAbout the College of Business Administration

Valpo’s College of Business Administration is among the elite 25% of business schools accredited by AACSB International, the foremost business accreditation body. This means that a Valpo business education provides studetns with a higher level of quality and facilitates admission to AACSB-accredited continuing education programs. Also, many top-tier businesses hire only graduates of AACSB-accredited schools. VU’s attractive student-to-faculty ratio ensures that students get personalized attention from experienced professionals, all of whom have doctoral-level qualifications in their teaching field.

Real life, real time:Students will graduate from the CBA with "real life" experience via an internship. This requirement puts their book learning to

the test while helping them make contacts they can use after graduation. Internships can be done overseas or at home, during a semester or over a summer. If they’re an international business major they’ll get global experience during a semester studying abroad.

BusinessThe Assessment Center:

VU’s nationally and internationally recognized Assessment Center evaluates student performance on realistic business tasks. During their sophomore and senior years, assessors will observe them in "real world" simulations like oral presentations or group decision-making and offer immediate feedback on their communication, leadership, teamwork, and interpersonal abilities. Armed with this professional evaluation, they will know their strengths along with areas for improvement.

NursingAbout the College of Nursing:

The College of Nursing is made up of highly qualified faculty who demonstrate a commitment and passion for teaching and their profession. They are clinically experienced nurses who are leaders in their fields. More than 60 percent of the full- time faculty hold doctoral degrees in nursing. The College of Nursing offers several innovative options for undergraduate students: the four-year BSN curriculum, Accelerated BSN option, and RN-BSN and RN-MSN options. VU offer s the Masters of Science in Nursing degree with a focus on nursing education, and a joint MSN/MBA program. In addition, VU offers the Doctor of Nursing Practice degree.

Department of Sociology and CriminologySociology

Sociology at Valparaiso University is a dynamic major that allows students to explore the social world in which they live. Sociology students at Valpo receive a broad education that combines the best of the liberal arts tradition with the practicalities of job related skills. VU students take courses in both social theory and research design. They learn to analyze social problems using critical thinking skills and they can learn to conduct program evaluations using the latest computer software.

•The Department of Sociology and Criminology offers a traditional sociology major and the option to concentrate in criminology. The concentration in criminology offers students opportunities to learn criminological perspectives and concepts, conduct research, serve the community, and do internships. VU prepares students for a variety of careers related to criminal justice, crime prevention and intervention, or advocacy, or for graduate or law school.

Law• The Valparaiso University School of Law provides a

Career CenterThe Career Center staff is committed to guiding students as they progress through their educational experiences and seek meaningful vocations.

VU’s goal is to help students become self-sufficient in planning their career, seeking employment and applying to graduate school.

• Please note that Valparaiso University is not required to look for an internship for students. Jobs and internships are normally advertised through the campus community via email and/or bulletin board.

Internships

At Valpo’s College of Business Administration, students will have plenty of opportunities to “get their feet wet” in the business world. All Valpo CBA students are required to complete an internship, putting their classroom learning to the test and getting real world experience alongside professionals. If students are interested in an international experience, VU can help its students make it happen. If students want an internship in a major metropolitan area, VU can provide assistance with that, too!
