WHEN IS MY CLEAN-UP DAY?

Your clean-up is one day only. There are a few ways to determine your clean-up day.

1) Find it online: Visit the curbside rules page on our website, http://www.vwrm.com/Curbside_Rules.html or download the My Waste App to your mobile device. Select your municipality and then click “My Schedule”. Type in your civic address and a complete collection schedule, including clean-up dates will be created for you.

2) Map: Use the map on the back cover of our calendar. If you live in one of the Towns, the Village of New Minas or the communities of Bridgetown or North Kentville then your specific clean-up date is listed. If you live in Zone A or Zone B, your pickup will be on your regular collection day during the period indicated. Note: The Town of Annapolis Royal is part of Zone A and the Villages of Kingston and Greenwood are part of Zone B.

3) Call us: Speak to our Hotline at 1-877-927-8300. Staff can provide you with your clean-up date.

The following items will not be collected during cleanup:

Electronics: televisions, CD/ DVD players,

computers, printers, AM/FM radios, VCR’s,

mp3 players, telephones etc.

Yard waste (leaves & brush)

Cardboard & other recyclables

Tires (car & truck)

Propane tanks, paint and Household

Hazardous Waste

Large or heavy auto parts, Car batteries

Fridges, freezers, air conditioners,

dehumidifiers without CFC stickers

Large glass windows or doors

APRIL 2018

During cleanups, you can put out extra garbage and large items that won’t fit on the regular truck. Yard waste and recyclables are not accepted for clean-up. Keep your clean-up pile separate from your regularly collected items.

IMPORTANT: Do not place anything at or near roadside during cleanup that

you wish to keep. Valley Waste and our collection contractor are not

responsible for lost or damaged items.

COTTAGE AREA DEPOTS

In the Valley, there are 50 cottage depots, designed for residents on private roads who don’t receive curbside collection. Over the years, there has been a misconception that anything can be placed at these depots, in any quantity, and by anyone.

Each call to clean up extra waste at these depots costs time, money, and the safety of the collectors - all of which is paid for by Valley taxpayers. With your help, we can change this; we can make the depots clean and safe to use.

COMMON MISTAKES AT THE COTTAGE BINS

If you use the cottage bins, please remember to always sort waste the same as at home: garbage, recycling and compost. Save large items for Spring and Fall Clean-up or bring to our Management Centres. A good rule of thumb is if it won’t get picked up at your home, it shouldn’t be placed at the bin. Also, residents on public roads should not be using the cottage depots. If you notice someone abusing the bin, please contact us.

COMPOSTINGDo you like to eat plastic? No? Interesting fact - plants don’t either. Each year, the Valley processes thousands of tonnes of organics into a soil amendment called compost and, sadly, plastics, metal, glass and garbage are still ending up in green carts on a daily basis. Let’s create good quality compost by following these simple tips:

• Before you chuck it – check it! Green carts are only for food waste, yard waste and soiled papers

• Never use regular plastic bags; they don’t break down, and they contaminate the compost

• Wrap food scraps in newspaper, boxboard and paper bags. Paper bags are preferred but if you must use a bag, use only 100% compostable bags.

PLASTIC BAGSPlastic bags – they’re convenient and so wasteful. The fact that we can recycle bags in NS is fantastic, but it also gives a false sense of security that all plastic bags are, indeed, recycled. In reality, a lot of plastic film still ends up in the landfill or as accidental pollution in streams, lakes and oceans

The great news is that there are very simple solutions to this problem:

• When shopping, bring your own bags; not only at the grocery store but all stores (Tip: leave a few bags in the trunk of the car in case you forget)

• Only buying one or two items? Say no thanks to a bag at the cash

• If you forget your own bags and have to use plastic ones, find a second life for them
