Commander’s Corner
Valley Squadron Members, Hope you are all well and having a good winter. As I write this I am already thinking of things that I have to do to my boat before the sailing season. Remember to support our Gam sponsors when possible if you need parts for your boats. Two of our newer members have already hitched up their sailboat to the back of their Motor Home and are headed down to race at Lake Havasu, so they are getting an early start on spring boating. Betty and I are also heading south for awhile but not taking the boat. Also for newer members and others that don’t know, you receive 6 issues of Pacific
Yachting included in your annual dues, but you can buy the other 6 issues for the low price of $19.00 plus HST through the magazine office. It is a very good deal and is encouraged by Pacific Mainland District CPS. Thanks to all those that attended Valentines party especially to Sandra Clow for great co-ordination; lots of good food and an excellent presentation on Haida Gwaii’ by Rick and Carol Ann Giroday. Just makes me want to go there for the summer. See you all next at the Change of Watch in April. Yours Truly,
Ray Salloway VPS Commander
We will no longer be phoning Squadron members regarding events but they will
be sent an e-mail... Any members who have not submitted their e-mail address
should do so immediately to Sandra Clow - [email protected] so that they can be
notified of upcoming events.

VALENTINE’S SOCIAL 2011
By Joanne Lillos
There were 62 people in attendance. All enjoyed
the fabulous potluck dinner. Sandra Clow
prepared the mouth-watering ham. It seems every
VPS potluck dinner out does the last. Those who
could not attend were missed. A spectacular slide
show presentation was given by the Girodays with
interesting stories unique to their trip in and
around Haida Gwaii’; very entertaining and
educational.
Even our new little ‘First Mate’ enjoyed the company.

There have been some changes to the lights at/under Second Narrows Bridge. Changes can be found by accessing
NOTMARS on website

Flares
It is no longer legal to dispose of flares by firing them off. The only agency authorized to legally dispose of flares
on the West Coast is Pacific Blasting & Demolition Ltd located at 3183 Norland Ave. in Burnaby.
Their costs are:
Pleasure craft signals $2.00 each
Hand held flares $2.00 each
Smoke signals $6.00 each
Rocket flares $6.00 each
It was noted by some of our Squadron members with moorage in the US that it is still possible to have flare
demonstrations to fire off outdated distress flares in the US. But, check this out for yourselves.
Pleasure Craft Licensing
note: Effective November 01, 2010, any pleasure craft powered by a motor over 10 HP will require a License
which will be valid for a period of 10 years. This license is not proof of ownership. But, it is mandatory.
Forms can be obtained from any Service Canada office or online at www.boatingsafety.gc.ca .
Forms for new license applications and for changes to existing licenses should be mailed to the following address
as Service Canada no longer processes them.
Pleasure Craft Licensing Centre (PCLC)
P.O. Box 2006
Fredericton, NB E3B 5G4
Applications must include the following:
1) a completed application form
2) proof of vehicle ownership
3) signed copy of a valid piece of gov't issued identification
At the moment, there is no cost associated with this.
Please send any helpful hints/suggestions/questions to [email protected]
