PRESIDENT’S LETTER
O n behalf of California State University, Northridge, I am pleased to welcome you to this evening’s extraordinary event fea-
turing the first appearance by world-renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma at Valley Performing Arts Center.
CSUN is one of California’s largest university campuses and provides an exceptional environment for the arts at Valley Performing Arts Center and the Mike Curb College of Arts, Media, and Communi-cation. Thousands of guests from the surrounding community and the campus annually benefit from the cultural and performing arts programming in the Great Hall, the Plaza del Sol Performance Hall, the Experimental Theatre and other theatres located in the Mike Curb College.
We greatly appreciate your generous support of this evening’s gala as sponsors, table hosts and attendees. I know that some of you are visiting Valley Performing Arts Center for the first time and have a remarkable experience ahead of you. I hope tonight’s visit will be the first of many, and that we will be welcoming you back to the Great Hall during the 2015-16 performance season.
Thank you again for playing such a major role in this evening’s performance and for contributing to the success of our great university.
Sincerely,
Dianne F. Harrison, Ph.D.President

W elcome to this evening’s Yo-Yo Ma performance, and thank you for supporting Valley Performing Arts
Center on this important occasion. Tonight marks the completion of my first year at VPAC and the earliest realization of the vision for its future, as the premiere cultural arts and entertainment destina-tion in the San Fernando Valley, at California State University, Northridge.
This evening also harkens the beginning of a new season at VPAC. Throughout this program book, we are announcing some of our 2015-16 performances. And throughout the auditorium tonight, you may meet some of the artists who will bring them to life.
Like tonight’s Yo-Yo Ma concert, VPAC will host virtuosi from around the world such as violinist Joshua Bell to humorist David Sedaris, from classi-cal pianist Yuja Wang to jazz pianist Jason Moran, from Broadway and television star Megan Hilty to opera star and CSUN alumna Michelle DeYoung.
Tonight’s many sponsors, committee members, and supporters are virtuosi in their own right,
and you will find their names and companies featured throughout our gala program. One special name stands out, and that is Gala Committee Chair Marla Lefton. I thank her as first amongst equals.
But there are no stars more important than the emerging ones who are students at CSUN. And you will see plenty of them onstage and in the auditorium at VPAC in 2015-16. When we announce the complete season later this month, we will also share a calendar of CSUN performances throughout the year taking place in our venue.
Tonight we thank all our stars – our CSUN family, donors, guests and friends – for their loyal and generous support in benefitting Valley Performing Arts Center.
Warmly,
Thor Steingraber, Executive Director Valley Performing Arts Center

Yo-Yo MA Cellist
Yo-Yo Ma’s multi-faceted career is testa-ment to his continual search for new ways to communicate with audiences and to his personal desire for artistic growth and re-newal. Whether performing new or familiar works from the cello repertoire, coming together with colleagues for chamber music or exploring cultures and musical forms outside the Western classical tradition, Mr. Ma strives to find connections that stimulate the imagination.
Yo-Yo Ma maintains a balance between his engagements as soloist with orchestras throughout the world and his recital and chamber music activities. He draws inspiration from a wide circle of collaborators, creating programs with such artists as Emanuel Ax, Daniel Barenboim, Christoph Eschenbach, Kayhan Kalhor, Ton Koopman, Yu Long, Bobby McFerrin, Edgar Meyer, Mark Morris, Riccardo Muti, Mark O’Connor, Cristina Pato, Kathryn Stott, Chris Thile, Michael Tilson Thomas, Wu Man, Wu Tong, Damian Woetzel, and David Zinman. Each of these collaborations is fueled by the artists’ interactions, often extending the boundaries of a particular genre. One of Mr. Ma’s goals is the exploration of music as a means of communication and as a vehicle for the migration of ideas across a range of
cultures throughout the world. To that end, he has taken time to immerse himself in subjects as diverse as native Chinese music with its distinctive instruments and the music of the Kalahari bush people in Africa.
Expanding upon this interest, in 1998 Mr. Ma established Silkroad, a nonprofit organi-zation that seeks to create meaningful change at the intersections of the arts, education and business. Under his artistic direction, Silkroad presents performances by the acclaimed Silk Road Ensemble and develops new music, cul-tural partnerships, education programs, and cross-disciplinary collaborations. Silkroad’s ongoing affiliation with Harvard University has made it possible to develop programs such as the Arts and Passion-Driven Learning
15www.ValleyPerformingArtsCenter.org
Institute for educators and teaching artists, held in collaboration with the Harvard Grad-uate School of Education, and a new Cultural Entrepreneurship initiative in partnership with Harvard Business School. More than 80 new musical and multimedia works have been commissioned for the Silk Road Ensemble from composers and arrangers around the world. Through his work with Silkroad, as throughout his career, Yo-Yo Ma seeks to ex-pand the cello repertoire, frequently perform-ing lesser known music of the 20th century and commissions of new concertos and recital pieces. He has premiered works by a diverse group of composers, among them Stephen Albert, Elliott Carter, Chen Yi, Richard Danielpour, Osvaldo Golijov, John Harbison,
Leon Kirchner, Peter Lieberson, Zhao Lin, Christopher Rouse, Giovanni Sollima, Bright Sheng, Tan Dun, John Williams and Dmitri Yanov-Yanovsky.
As the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s Jud-son and Joyce Green Creative Consultant, Mr. Ma is partnering with Maestro Riccardo Muti to provide collaborative musical leadership and guidance on innovative program develop-ment for The Negaunee Music Institute of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and for Chicago Symphony artistic initiatives. Ma’s work focuses on the transformative power music can have in individuals’ lives and on increas-ing the number and variety of opportunities audiences have to experience music in their communities. Mr. Ma and the Institute have
16 facebook.com/VPACatCSUN
created the Citizen Musician Initiative (www.citizenmusician.org), a movement that calls on all musicians, music lovers, music teachers and institutions to use the art form to bridge gulfs between people and to create and inspire a sense of community.
Yo-Yo Ma is strongly committed to edu-
cational programs that not only bring young audiences into contact with music but also allow them to participate in its creation. While touring, he takes time whenever possible to conduct master classes as well as more informal programs for students – mu-sicians and non-musicians alike. At the same

time, he continues to develop new concert programs for family audiences, for instance helping to inaugurate the family series at Carnegie Hall. In each of these undertak-ings, he works to connect music to students’ daily surroundings and activities with the goal of making music and creativity a vital part of children’s lives from an early age. He has also reached young audiences through appearances on Arthur, Mister Rogers’ Neigh-borhood and Sesame Street.
Mr. Ma’s discography of over 90 albums (including 18 Grammy Award-winners) reflects his wide-ranging interests. He has made several successful recordings that defy categorization, among them Hush with Bobby McFerrin, Appalachia Waltz and Appalachian Journey with Mark O’Connor and Edgar Mey-er, and two Grammy-winning tributes to the music of Brazil, Obrigado Brazil and Obriga-do Brazil – Live in Concert. Mr. Ma’s recent recordings include Mendelssohn Trios with Emanuel Ax and Itzhak Perlman; The Goat Rodeo Sessions, with Edgar Meyer, Chris Thile and Stuart Duncan, which received the 2013 Grammy for Best Folk Album; and A Playlist Without Borders, recorded with the Silk Road Ensemble, which was released in September 2013. Across this full range of releases, Mr. Ma remains one of the best-selling recording artists in the classical field. All of his recent albums have quickly entered the Billboard chart of classical best sellers, remaining in the Top 15 for extended periods, often with as many as four titles simultaneously on the list. In fall 2009, Sony Classical released a box set of over 90 albums to commemorate Mr. Ma’s 30 years as a Sony recording artist.
Yo-Yo Ma was born in 1955 to Chinese
parents living in Paris. He began to study the cello with his father at age four and soon came with his family to New York, where he spent most of his formative years. Later, his principal teacher was Leonard Rose at the Juilliard School. He sought out a traditional liberal arts education to expand upon his conservatory training, graduating from Harvard University in 1976. He has received numerous awards, including the Avery Fisher Prize (1978), the Glenn Gould Prize (1999), the National Medal of the Arts (2001), the Dan David Prize (2006), the Leonie Sonning Music Prize (2006), the World Economic Forum’s Crys-tal Award (2008), the Presidential Medal of Freedom (2010), the Polar Music Prize (2012) and the Vilcek Prize in Contemporary Music (2013). In 2011, Mr. Ma was recognized as a Kennedy Center Honoree. Appointed a Cul-tureConnect Ambassador by the United States Department of State in 2002, Mr. Ma has met with, trained and mentored thousands of stu-dents worldwide in countries including Lithu-ania, Korea, Lebanon, Azerbaijan and China. Mr. Ma serves as a UN Messenger of Peace and as a member of the President’s Committee on the Arts & the Humanities. He has performed for eight American presidents, most recently at the invitation of President Obama on the occasion of the 56th Inaugural Ceremony.
Mr. Ma and his wife have two children. He plays two instruments, a 1733 Montag-nana cello from Venice and the 1712 Davidoff Stradivarius.
Just look how far we’ve come.
CSUN is more than just our alma mater. It’s the place where we met, and built a strong foundation
for our careers and our life journey together.
Tonight we celebrate one of CSUN’s crown jewels, the Valley Performing Arts Center, which will be a magnificent resource
for the region for generations to come.
We feel blessed that CSUN has been such an integral part of our lives. So proud to be Matadors!

The 2015-16 VPAC season is filled with familiar faces -- Joshua Bell and Savion Glover for example. There are new faces
too. And tonight at the Yo-Yo Ma gala, you may even meet some of these artists in person.
To open the season, I’ve paired two important Southern California companies - the inventive dance company Diavolo and the New West Symphony for the American premiere of L’ Espace du Temps, a trilogy choreographed by Jacques Heim. This will be the first time a dance company and a full orchestra will share the VPAC stage and orchestra pit.
And Broadway lovers will whet their appetite with solo performances by Broadway superstars Megan Hilty and Lea Salonga, in anticipation of the first full Broadway produc-tion at VPAC – Dreamgirls, which will play for four performances in May.
Pacific Symphony will perform two concerts at VPAC next year, both conducted by CSUN alumnus Richard Kaufman. The first is Stew-
art Copeland’s new composition to accompa-ny the 1925 silent film Ben Hur. The com-poser will also perform doing what we know him best for - commanding a massive drum set. The second Pacific Symphony concert will be a Sunday family matinee of Peter and the Wolf narrated by one of the world’s most recognized voices - Nancy Cartwright, of Bart Simpson fame.
Jazz great John Pizzarelli will create two original concerts for VPAC on behalf of Frank Sinatra’s 100th birthday. And for VPAC’s own 5th birthday, I’ve invited two generations to help us celebrate - Bobby McFerrin and his son Taylor McFerrin. Jazz pianist Jason Moran will bring Fats Waller Dance Party to the Great Hall for Mardi Gras.
VPAC’s first multi-year residency will be held by Aspen Santa Fe Ballet, America’s pre-miere contemporary ballet company. 2015-16 is filled with VPAC firsts and original pro-grams that can be seen nowhere else. Please join us. Tickets will go on sale soon.
