Valley City State UniversitySummary of Recent Initiatives, Grants and Awards

• 1993, 1997 VCSU receives $360,000 in Bush FoundationFaculty development grants to strengthen faculty skills in theapplication of instructional technology and appropriatepedagogy.

• 1993 VCSU enters partnership with area schools, resulting ina $300,000 startup grant from the state to fund a Center forInnovation in Instruction. The Center provides inserviceinstruction and technology planning for K-12 schoolsthroughout the state.

• 1994-2002 VCSU equips all classrooms with multimediateaching stations and projection systems.

• 1995 VCSU receives $1.7 million collaborative DOE TitleIII grant with sister institution for the purpose of developinguniversal digital portfolio assessment capacity. All graduates nowcreate a digital portfolio showing four years of achievement.

• 1996 VCSU becomes the second in the nation to implementuniversal computer access for faculty and students by becominga Thinkpad University.

• 1996 VCSU receives Best Practices Award from CAUSE forcreation of Center for Innovation in Instruction.

• 1997-2002 VCSU networks virtually all dorms and generaluse spaces in support of the campus notebook initiative.

• 1998 VCSU receives $1.7 million DOE Title III grant tomake programs accessible through technology. Specifically, the

• 2000 Elementary Education receives $390,000 DOE “PT3”award for the purpose of Preparing Tomorrows Teachers to useTechnology (PT3).

• 2001 VCSU enters partnership with local economicdevelopment entities to create a new 20,000 sq ft RegionalTechnology Center to strengthen university/community ties andpromote information technology related growth. EduTech[formerly The Center for Innovation in Instruction] and theVCSU Technology Education Deptartment are housed in theCenter.

• 1999 - 2003 US News & World Report lists VCSU among topcolleges in annual college review issues.

• 2000 YAHOO lists VCSU as one of the most wired campusesin the nation.

• 2001 President Ellen Chaffee is selected by ComputerWorldmagazine as one of the top 100 Information Technology Leadersin America.

• 2002 VCSU receives accreditation from NCATE and NorthCentral for the first online standards based Technology TeacherEducation Program in the nation.

• 2002 The Division of Education receives the InternationalSociety for Technology in Education (ISTE) DistinguishedAchievement Award. Leaving a LegacyThe Valley City State University Foundationrecently became affiliated with the Red RiverValley Leave A Legacy Program. The Leave ALegacy program is intended to increase publicawareness of the many benefits of charitablebequests. It is also designed to dispel the mythsabout charitable estate planning. Through aprocess of education, the program encouragesprofessional advisors to incorporate charitableestate planning in the work with their clients.Information and materials are provided toempower all charitable nonprofit organizationsto participate and benefit from increasedlegacy giving.

The program is designed to be a collaborativeeffort between nonprofit organizations; barand other estate planning professionalorganizations; community foundations;corporations; and a variety of media outlets.The program encourages people from all walksof life to make gifts from their estates tononprofit organizations of their choice.

The Leave A Legacy program encouragespeople who have supported Valley City StateUniversity while they were living to continueto have an impact on the university after thetime of their death. They can do so with acharitable bequest. Gifts can come in the formof money, property, stocks, bonds, lifeinsurance, or a percentage of an estate. Thegifts are intended to say thank you for thegood work of Valley City State University andthe tremendous impact the university and it’speople have had on your life. How do I leave a gift in memory of a person?A gift is a wonderful way to recognize someonewho has made a difference in your life. Youmay also give to a specific cause such as a newbuilding, an academic area of study, or electto give the gift to the university to use in thearea of greatest need. This type of gift can bearranged in your will in much the same waythat you would leave a personal gift from yourestate. You simply need to make it clear thatthe gift is given in memory of a particularperson or a specific cause.
