The history of Valentine’s Day The name of this calebration comes from

Terni’s Bishop – St. Valentine. Saint Valentine was a martyr, who died in 269, during the reign of the Emperor Claudius II. In the times of persecution Saint Valentine cured the daughter of the Emperor’s servant’who was blind. After that the family was converted to Christianity. The Roman Emperor wasn’t happy about that and he convicted the Bishop to whipping and beheading. In the place where he was buried, Pope Julius I ordered to build abasilica.

Valentine’s Day is also associated with a legend about ayoung man, who was sentenced to death, because he had helped Christians. He was forced to fight along with them against lions. Before his cruel death, he sent a letter to his beloved woman. The man signed the letter: “From your Valentine”. To this day Valentine’s cards are signed with the same words.
