They are used in bonding.

Alkaline Earth Metals have two valence e-s. (s2)

Boron Group or Group 13 has 3 valence e-s. (s2p1)

Carbon Group or Group 14 has 4 valence e-s. (s2p2)

Nitrogen Group or Group 15 has 5 valence e-s. (s2p3)

Chalcogen Group or Group 16 has 6 valence e-
