Valdosta: The Azalea City


The city of Valdosta is named after a scenic estate owned by Governor George Troup in Laurens County, Georgia. Governor Troup signed the act that created Lowndes County in 1825. The unique, Americanized name is thought to be derived from a district in the Alpine Mountains of Italy called Valle d’Aosta.

Valdosta definitely lives up to its name with its abundance of flowering azaleas and gardens during the spring and summer seasons. Fortunately for the community, R.J. Drexel, a generous, nature-loving person, came to Valdosta as its parks superintendent many years ago. He began planting azaleas along city streets, the cemetery, church grounds and around the government buildings of Valdosta. In the spring of each year, Mr. Drexel would give five azalea plants to each citizen for planting.

Mr. Drexel inspired the ladies of the Garden Club to use azalea liners as a ways-and-means project. Members would purchase huge loads of azalea liners from an area nursery and sell them for 10 cents each to raise funds for the Crescent, home of the Garden Club. Drexel Park is named in his honor and fittingly, is home to the city’s annual Azalea Festival each Spring.

Welcome to Title Town, USA

Winning TraditionFor more than 30 years, the Valdosta area was known as “Winnersville,” which could explain why in 2008, the city gained national recognition for being crowned “Title Town USA” by ESPN.

Without a single pro-sports title to claim, Valdosta beat out giants such as New York, Boston and Los Angles, by excelling in a variety of sports at the high school and college level.

Valdosta High School is still known as the “winningest football team in the country,” with more than 800 wins and many regional, state and national titles to their name. Cross-town rival Lowndes High School has won five state titles since 1980. And it’s not just football—both schools have garnered state and national championships in many other sports as well.

Private schools in the area, such as Valwood, Georgia Christian and Open Bible, also contribute to the honor with their excellence and titles in a variety of sports, such as football, baseball and basketball.

At the college level, Valdosta State University is known as a perennial powerhouse in Division II football, having won three national championships. VSU also holds national championships in baseball, tennis and golf. But what impressed ESPN the most was Valdosta’s strong sense of community spirit and commitment to excellence—qualities that led to being named “Title Town USA.”

Downtown Valdosta

Fairview Historic DistrictConcentrated Downtown among River Street, Vernadoe Street, Wells Street, and Central Place, the village of Fairview predates the incorporation of the City of Valdosta. The area underwent three periods of development: 1840–1860, the late 1890s Victorian surge, and the 1910– 1920s period of Prairie and Craftsman influence. The Fairview Neighborhood Association was instrumental in forming the Valdosta Heritage Foundation in 1981. The area was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in May 1984.

Historic DowntownDowntown is bustling with renewed spirit! With public and private investments over the past three years reaching more than $12 million, the physical appearances of the buildings and pedestrian areas are prime examples of these improvements.

The downtown is a great place to shop, dine and work, as well as a newfound area to live. Downtown Valdosta is situated around the Lowndes County Courthouse, a grand Neoclassical structure built in 1905. It stands tall among the charming buildings, which are now hip retail stores, professional offices and privately owned eateries. Some of the area’s oldest churches can also be found downtown.

Special events throughout the year appeal to a wide variety of visitors. For example, the Brown Bag Lunch Concert Series in May is a week long series of concerts showcasing our local and regional musical talent. Historic Tour HighlightsConverse-Dalton-Ferrell House - 305 N. Patterson St. • 229-244-8575Restored to its 1902 glory, this pristine Neoclassical residence serves as the Valdosta Junior Service League’s headquarters. Available for private and community functions.

The Dosta Playhouse - 122 N. Ashley St. • 229-247-8243The Dosta Theatre was built where two stores were lost to fire and opened the spring of 1941. The Art Moderne-style building is reflective of the sobering Depression, stripped of most ornamentation with an obsession with streamlining and speed. Glass blocks, portholes and curved corners celebrate cruise liners and the automobile age. Presently the home of Theatre Guild-Valdosta.

The Crescent - 904 N. Patterson St. 229-244-6747This Neoclassical structure built in 1898 was the former home of U.S. Senator William S. West and is Valdosta’s most well-known landmark. The house is named for its semicircular portico supported by 13 massive Doric columns, representing each original American colony. It was preserved by the Garden Club of Valdosta in 1951 and is now the Garden Center. The estate’s grounds boast beautiful test gardens, an octagonally built schoolhouse, a quaint chapel, and a small activity room with a stage. Tours Mon.–Fri., 2–5 p.m. and by appointment.

Lowndes County Historical Society & MuseumLocated in the old Carnegie Public Library building, the Lowndes County Historical Society & Museum is a treasure trove of information outlining the history of Valdosta and Lowndes County. The Historical Society collects and maintains research materials and displays, including a large library collection of various government records and newspaper clippings. Displays include many fascinating items such as uniforms and weapons from various wars and a large file regarding the legendary Doc Holliday, who lived and practiced dentistry here.Tourism information and meeting and guest speaker facilitiesare available. The museum hosts a wide array of events each year..

Hahira, GeorgiaEleven miles north of Valdosta, Hahira is the gateway to Lowndes County from the north. Citizens enjoy a small-town atmosphere with the advantages of a larger city nearby. Hahira hosts several annual events, including a River Run Equestrian Ride the weekend before Thanksgiving.The Honey Bee Festival, held the first week in October, starts off with a breakfast on the first Monday and is followed by beauty pageants, arts and crafts shows, gospel singing, a 5K run, live bee demonstrations, and a finale parade on Saturday. Brooks CountyBrooks County (population 16,242) is ripe with history.Established in 1858, it includes the communities of Dixie, Barwick, Pavo, Barney, Morven and its county seat, Quitman. Quitman, comprises the second largest National Register of Historic Places district in the state of Georgia and boasts of tree lined avenues and extraordinary historic architecture. Quitman, known for its gracious southern charm, antiques stores, creative boutiques and great restaurants is also known as the Camellia City due to the abundance of color when the camellias, azaleas and other flowers are in bloom. It is located just 15 miles west of Interstate 75, 25 miles north of Interstate 10 and on U.S. Highway 84. Brooks County’s moderate climate and geographic location make it the perfect spot for retirees as well as for businesses that depend on transportation to flourish. Echols CountyEchols County (population 3,999) was created on December 13, 1858, after being carved out of Lowndes and Clinch counties. The county was named in honor of Robert M. Echols and boasts the only unincorporated county seat in Georgia--Statenville. The town was named for Captain James W. Staten, the first representative in the Georgia Legislature from Clinch County. Agriculture provides 67.5 percent of jobs in Echols. The county is also the home of mystery writer Virginia Lanier, folklore writer W.C. Tomlinson and fiction writer Janice Daugharty. Additionally, Echols features the Macedonia Baptist Church, which was founded in 1850 and is one of the oldest churches in the area.

Lanier CountyCreated from Berrien, Lowndes and Clinch counties on August 7, 1920, Lanier County (population 7,361) was named in honor of Sydney Clopton Lanier, a poet from Macon, Georgia, whose work explored man’s faith and his relationship to the world around him. Lanier County is located in the south-central section of Georgia, 30 miles north of the Florida state line and 25 miles east of Interstate 75. Lanier County is home to Lakeland’s Milltown Murals, depicting the 1925 era when Milltown was renamed Lakeland. Lanier County is also home to Patten Seed Company, a 50-year-old company that has become the nation’s production leader in warm-season turf grass seed and sod. Points of interest include 3,900-acre Banks Lake National Wildlife Refuge; Lake Irma; Roquemore Park, an 8-acre park established in 1994; and the Robert Simpson Nature Trail. Moody Air Force BaseOperating under the Air Combat Command (ACC), Moody AFB is home to the 23rd Wing, better known as the world famous Flying Tigers. Their mission is to organize, train and employ combat-ready A-10 Thunderbolts, HC-130’s and HH-60 Pave Hawks, along with pararescue troops, force protection assets and other personnel. More than 5,500 military and civilian members, including geographically separated units in Nevada, Florida, Arizona and North Carolina, work together to provide world-wide close air support, force protection and combat search and rescue operations in support of humanitarian interests, national security and the global war on terrorism.

Approximately 8,300 military members and their families are the core population of Moody AFB, along with 3,000 civilian employees and families. Along with 15,000 retirees and family members, they make a significant impact on the area’s population. Moody is also a major component of the area’s economic machine, contributing more than $323 million dollars to the local economy.

Historically, the base has impacted the area since its conception in 1941, after a group of concerned citizens successfully rallied the War Department’s interest in the 9,300 acre tract of land northeast of Valdosta for use in its expanding defense program.

Drexel Park11.1 acres • 1401 N. Patterson St., ValdostaDrexel Park, located across the street from the VSU main campus, is one of VLPRA”S most popular parks and home to the annual Azalea Festival. The park is about 11 acres and offers ample shaded green space. It is conveniently located by VSU and features a creek with a picturesque bridge and a large playground. It is bordered by Azalea City Multipurpose Trail. The park is outfitted with electricity and is available for rent.

John W. Saunders Park1151 River Street, ValdostaSaunders Memorial Park houses 6 covered picnic shelters that are available for rent. The largest one holds up to 150 people with more than a dozen picnic tables and has its own designated restrooms. Every shelter features electricity and a designated grill. The park also has a paved walking & nature trail, two regulation-sized outdoor basketball courts, a splash pad, a playground, and an amphitheater complete with electricity and stage lights that can seat hundreds of people. The shelters, amphitheater, and basketball courts are all available for rent.

McKey Park15.5 acres • 112 Burton Ave., ValdostaMcKey Park is in the middle of Valdosta on Patterson Street and is home to the hugely popular Harry B. Anderson Tennis Center. The tennis center features 12 tennis courts that are used for lessons, clinics, and general tennis recreation. It also has a tennis shelter, bleachers, bathrooms and water fountains as well as a pro shop which houses the tennis pro’s office. The park also features a sand volleyball court, two large playgrounds, restrooms, and two large picnic pavilions with grills. The tennis courts, volleyball court, and picnic pavilions are all available for rent.

Scott Park1101 Old Statenville Rd./Continental Drive, ValdostaScott Park is 28 acres of fun! A lit, paved walking track with painted lanes is perfect for runners or walkers, while a regulation-size football field with bleachers and lights is a fantastic spot to host practices or games. The fenced-in park also features four lit, regulation outdoor basketball courts, three lit regulation tennis courts, and a large lit and covered stage with electricity. There’s also a large open field with a baseball backstop and two picnic shelters with electricity and water hook ups available for rent. Restrooms available.

Freedom Park3795 Guest Rd., ValdostaFreedom Park is a huge multi-purpose facility with something for everyone! The parks 250-plus acres is conveniently located near Moody Air Force Base and features a large, beautifully maintained baseball/softball complex with eight regulation adult softball fields, bathrooms, a concession stand, and a covered playground. Ten acres of soccer fields, a paved walking track, a 18-hole Disc Golf course, a dog park for large and small breeds, and ample amounts of open field space fill out the venue. Freedom Park hosts the regional Spring Olympics each year, dozens of baseball and softball tournaments, and disc golf tournaments. The sports fields, golf course, and open areas are all available for rent and are the perfect space for your large event!
