In May of 2004, within the context of harmo-nization of the various national sterilization standards, a European Work Group – as as-signed by the European Union Commission – published European Standard EN 13060. This new standard replaces the previous nati-onal standards for small autoclaves. This new

european standard EN 13060 designates small autoclaves as Class “B”, “S”, or “N”. “Class B” autoclaves fulfil the strictest stipulations of this standard and can be used for every type of instruments (also hollow instruments) and every type of packaging. Fractionated pre-vacuum

Fractionated pre-vacuum means that the sys-tem removes air from the sterilization chamber in a pulsed process of repeated evacuation, alternative with period inflow of steam. This process satisfies the strictest standards for the quality of the sterilization steam. This techni-que has accordingly represented the standard for hospital sterilizers for years now. More and more treatment that was performed earlier in hospitals, however, now takes place on an

takes place on an outpatient basis. For such treatments, therapists now generally use con-tainers or multiwrap packages for the sterili-zed items. Such procedures, however, require autoclaves that are sufficiently powerful and sophisticated. Many autoclaves that operate on the gravitation principle, as extensively used until now in surgeries, have reached the limit of their capability.

Innovative water system

Standard autoclaves operate exclusively on the basis of water-circulation systems that conti-nuously re-use the water. After being used once, this water becomes dirty. The advanced Vacuklav®31-B and Vacuklav®23-B operate on a single-use (non-reusable) water principle. This is considerably more gentle on the instru-ments, and on the autoclave. This reduces to a minimum the effort required for cleaning the autoclave – which saves you time and money.

Testing

On the basis of new general conditions of ste-rilization work – for example, new legislation concerning medical products and infection protection – documentation of sterilization processes has become urgently advisable. The standard EN 867-5 has defined a test recep-tacle for “Class B” autoclaves that simulates the most difficult requirements placed on the sterilization of long, narrow-bore instruments. MELAG offers its MELAcontrol® system for this testing purpose. It consists of a test unit, the so-called helix, into which the user inserts an indicator strip. After successful steriliza-tion, the user dates the helix and archives it for purposes of providing later evidence. Unlikebacteriological tests by local authorities or hygienic institutes, MELAcontrol® results are available within a few minutes.

Post-Vacuum for best drying results

For years now, bacteriologists have been pointing out the importance of drying in the autoclave. This has been taken into account by the experts working on European standards, so that stringent drying criteria apply for “Class B” autoclaves. These criteria stipulate a resi-dual moisture content not exceeding 0.2% for instruments or 1.0% for textiles. The deep post-vacuum of the Vacuklav®31-B and Vacuklav®23-B is ideally suited to shorten drying times and to optimize drying, especially when wrapped goods (also large amounts of textiles) are being sterilized.

Use of MELAG Foil Holders considerably en-hances the drying process for sterilized items that have been sealed in sterilization packages. This arrangement prevents water droplets from collecting inside the sterilization packages when they lie flat on a tray. If the packages

stand vertically in the MELAG Foil Holder, the condensed droplets of water quickly flow down and out of the packages. The MELAG Foil Hol-ders can be easily stacked: two of them fit into the chamber.

Quick program

The Vacuklav®31-B and Vacuklav®23-B offer a quick program for those occasions when you need instruments in a hurry. With the pre-warming function activated, unwrapped instruments which are needed fast can besterilized with a fractionated pre-vacuum in only 11 minutes. There is no need for waiting time between sterilization cycles.

No water connection required

The MELAdem®40 water treatment system helps to save time and money. It works afterthe ion-exchange method. It is designed for connection to the Vacuklav®24-B andVacuklav®30-B autoclaves and automaticallyfeeds fresh, demineralized water into theautoclave. It is no longer necessary to manu-ally fill the water storage tank with fresh water. The installation of the MELAdem®40 can be directly at the Vacuklav (see picture left) at the wall (see picture below) or in a sub-cabinet.

Big inside – small outside

Even though the Vacuklav®31-B features a large usable sterilization chamber of 18 litres, and the Vacuklav®23-B offers 22 litres, the two autoclaves require only little space in the sur-gery. The Vacuklav®31-B fits on a counter only 50 cm deep, and the Vacuklav®23-B needs only a depth of 60 cm.

Advantages of MELAdest®65

Distilled water is necessary for successful sterilization. Poor-quality water will leave spots on your sterilized instruments. With MELAdest®65 you produce high-quality dis-tilled water in your own surgery. MELAdest®65 needs only a power supply. The distilled water flows into the plastic container delivered with MELAdest®65. You then fill the water directly from this container into the water storage tank of the autoclave. This procedure ideally pre-serves the condition of your autoclave as well as the instruments that you sterilize.

MELAsteam®

MELAsteam® is a steam cleaning system available as option. MELAsteam® enables one additional function from the Vacuklav®: steam-cleaning of instruments before steriliza-tion, with hot steam generated in the chamber of the autoclave. The steam flows from theVacuklav® through the handle connected to the autoclave.

Documentation

MELAprint®42 – log printer

In surgeries or hospitals, documentation of sterilization for prevention of infection is cru-cial to fulfil the state of the art, and to satisfy insurance requirements. Documentation of the cycles of Vacuklav® autoclaves is possiblewith the MELAprint®42 log printer via theintegrated serial interface (RS 232).

MELAprint®42 records the following data:

- Selected program- Date, time, and current cycle number- Date for vacuum, pressure, and temperature- Confirmation of a successful program cycle- Any deviation from required values.

MELAwin®42 - documentation software

The more effective and convenient solution is to integrate sterilization documentation into the computer system already in use in your surgery. MELAG has developed its MELAwin® software for this purpose, for installation on your surgery PC (Windows®95, Pentium®, 100 MHz, or better). The serial interface inte-grated into the Vacuklav® connects the auto-clave to your PC. This configuration archives all data in the PC, instead of printing them out with the MELAprint®42. MELAwin® can additionally document the following information:

- Loading of the autoclave (e.g., instrument sets)- The name of the current operator- Information on the patients being treated with the sterilized instruments.

Operating convenience

The Vacuklav®31-B and Vacuklav®23-B offer 4 sterilization programs and 2 test programs(Vacuum test and Bowie & Dick test). The test programs conveniently test autoclave functioning, whenever needed in the surgery. The user presses the start button, and the selected program runs automatically, with monitoring by an advanced microprocessor.

MELAdem®47

If you sterilize many times a day, you need considerable amounts of demineralized wa-ter. For such applications, MELAG offers its MELAdem®47 water treatment system, which functions on the principle of reverse osmo-sis. Official institutes recommend systems that function on this principle, owing to their environmental friendliness. MELAdem®47 is delivered with a water storage tank and with a tap for drawing off demineralized water.

MELAdem®40

The MELAdem®40 water treatment system helps to save time and money. It works afterthe ion-exchange method. It is designed for connection to the Vacuklav®24-B andVacuklav®30-B autoclaves and automaticallyfeeds fresh, demineralized water into theautoclave. It is no longer necessary to manu-ally fill the water storage tank with fresh water. Quality and precision for most exacting hygienic requirements

More than 50 years ago, MELAG began in Berlin to specialize in the manufacture ofsterilization equipment. As a result of high-levelquality consciousness, reliability, and innova-tive eagerness – together with the highest in safety objectives – the family-run enterprise MELAG has succeeded in becoming a leading producer of sterilization equipment. Verifica-

tion of this success has been the sale of more than 355,000 MELAG units around the world. Decades of experience, modern computer-aided production technology in application on over 7,000 sq. metres of production floor, the employment of highest-quality materials, and an experienced and reliable staff – all thesehave made MELAG equipment renowned for its quality and convenience of operation. MELAG corporate policy includes systematic specialization in a limited line of products.

This enables MELAG as a successful, medium-size business to employ its highly specializeddevelopment team to effectively satisfy market demands and to further develop the MELAG line of products as a leading international provider. The entire MELAG staff is proud tohave made an important contribution to the protection of the health of patients and of medical staff, with the equipment and acces-sories it produces for reliable sterilizationand safe storage of sterilized articles.

MELAseal®

With MELAseal® the operator can seal the sterilization packages without physical exerti-on, to produce optimal sealing seams 10 mm wide (German standard DIN 58953 stipulates at least 8 mm). These sealing machines are available in two versions:- MELAseal®101 “comfortable”- MELAseal®100 “economic”.

MELAfol®

MELAfol® packages guarantee sterile storage of sterilized items. MELAfol® is a clear steri-lization package. It consists of a special com-bination of paper and plastic sheeting that is impervious to microorganisms, highly resis-tant to tearing, highly transparent, effectively closed by hot sealing, and wrinkle-resistant.The peel-open sealing seam makes theMELAfol® packages easy to open.

Sterile storage

Between removal from the autoclave and their next use, sterilized items must be stored so as to be protected from contamination. With the sealing machines MELAseal® and the sterili-zation package MELAfol®, MELAG offers the proper, cost-effective components required.

MELAclean®

Disinfection Cleanser

Proper instrument preparation before steri-lization is of utmost importance. Only clean instruments can be reliably sterilized; where there is residue on an instrument, successful sterilization is not possible. In most surgeries, however, cleaning and disinfection of the instruments is performed manually. This type of cleaning, however, carries the risk of many possibilities of mis-takes and carelessness – and the staff in the surgery is also subject to the danger of infec-tion. There is no chance of such risk with the advanced MELAclean® cleaning and chemi-cal disinfection system. MELAclean® cleans, disinfects (with MELAclean® Disinfection Cleanser), rinses, and dries the instruments fully automatically.
