VAC INTERESTING NEWS The Village Arts Coalition VAC/Stomp c/o Caroline Stepanek 720 11th Street Boulder CO 80302 One of Boulder’s Longest Running Dance Groups SUBMITTED BY: ANDY BARNETT. PHOTOS SUBMITTED BY: MITCH PINGEL Calico and Boots was started in the fall of 1946 by young dancers, many of whom graduated from Dr. Lloyd Shaw’s Cheyenne Mountain School in Colorado Springs. Joined by former dancers from the DU Promenaders and members of Orchesis, a CU modern dance group, they established a student square dance club and an associated exhibition team. From the beginning Calico and Boots has been known for its beautiful dances, joyous natural style and love of the dance. The club and team are proud to carry on a sixty-four year tradition of excellence. The style and general philosophy of Calico and Boots is patterned after the Cheyenne Mountain Dancers and the Shaw influence is evident in the recreational club’s program and the exhibition team repertoire. The club still bases its program on the variety and traditions of the American folk dance. Although it is a mainstream club, dancers also enjoy contras, quadrilles, mixers and, of course, round dances. While waltzes are probably the favorites, two-steps, schottisches, polkas and Latin rhythms are popular at the club dances. Many of the figures danced by the exhibition team come from early western square dances and include several aerials. Appalachian clogging, New England contras, and couple dances round out a repertoire that represents the best of traditional American dance. Among Calico and Booters there has always been an interest in exhibition dancing. Over the years the group has done more than two thousand performances in some forty states including benefits, conventions, school events, rodeos, fairs and regional and national festivals, as well as representing the United States internationally in Dijon, France and Singapore. They have participated in two national pageants and have choreographed and produced several evening-long theater performances centered on the history and variety of American dance. Calico and Boots meets for recreational dancing the second and fourth Saturdays at Glenn’s Den and welcomes anyone with an interest in dance. No partner is required and experience is not a prerequisite. For more information about the club or the exhibition team, please visit our website at www.calicoandboots.org.
