The average surface contact area of 2the tyre with the road is 0.1m . In other
words, our car is only in contact with the road over a surface equivalent to four postcards. When a shock absorberis worn, it means that the wheel loses contact with the asphalt due to uncontrolled bouncing, so the total contact surface is drastically reduced, jeopardising the safety of the vehicle occupants.
Car shock absorbers do an average 5,000 to 7,000 compression-rebound cycles per kilometre circulating in a average road. This means that their interior elements become damaged, making the shock absorber lose its functionality little by little, reducing the comfort and jeopardising the vehicle
®safety. Monroe recommends servicing the vehicle shock absorbers every 20,000 km’s and replacing them every 80,000 km’s.
5,000 - 7,000 CYCLES per km
20,000 KM’s = 250,000,000x
80,000 KM’s = 500,000,000x
With 50% worn shock absorbers, a medium - range vehicle travelling at just 50 mph on an uneven surface will experience a braking distance increased by 2.6 m.
Today, most vehicles travelling on our roads are fitted with assisted braking systems (ABS). In these kinds of systems, if the shock absorbers are 50% worn, a medium-range vehicle travelling on an uneven surface at 50 mph has an increased braking distance of around 5.80 metres (more than double that of the same vehicle without ABS).
A vehicle with 50% Worn shock absorbers travelling at 60 kph around a 40-metres corner radius , loses stability and goes off-course 8 kph slower than the same car with new shock absorbers.
E.g. - A car with good shocks can turn the corner safely at 60 kph.
A car with 50% worn shocks will have to reduce speed to around 50 kph to turn the corner safely.
In the rain, with 50% worn shock absorbers and 6 mm of water on the road surface, the vehicle begins to aquaplane at 67 mph, whereas the same vehicle with new shock absorbers starts to aquaplane at 77mph.

A 50% Worn shock absorber increases driver fatigue by up to 26%. When we are tired, the speed with which we respond reduces very quickly, increasing the risk of having an accident.

Travelling with worn shock absorbers changes the height of our headlights due to uncontrolled movement in the chassis, which means that at night we have poorer visibility on the road. The change of height in the light may dazzle vehicles coming in the opposite direction and even cause a serious accident.
