Ministry of Presence•A chaplain represents a religious presence in a community. When people see a chaplain, they think of faith, church and their total religious experience, whether positive or negative. The presence of a chaplain brings comfort and consolation to those who have a positive relationship to their church and God.

•A chaplain moves among his people often to enhance a person’s relationship with God, express loving concern for those who are hurting and open the spiritual door for those who are seeking.

Basic Principles for an Informal Setting> Be sure and sit or stand where direct eye contact can be maintained.

> Respect a person’s time. Do not impose. Let them set the time limitations. When they have to leave, allow them to leave.

> Let them decide whether to remain where you are or go to another place to discuss their problem. The final decision must be theirs.

> Keep you part of the conversation to a minimum.

>Respond to passersby normally, but maintain mental presence of subject matter being discussed.

> Help the counselee to be as much at ease as possible. Build rapport at the beginning. Use of humor is good.

> Carry a pad and pencil in your pocket to write down requests made by counselee.
