From the Director’s Desk

I am happy to forward the first issue of the fifth volume of NIT Puducherrybi-annual newsletter, "PARIPRASHNA". During this difficult times of COVID’19with lock down and social distancing, this helps us to stay positive and keepthe positive mindset towards progress despite difficult times. The entire NITPYgrieved for the loss of our young and energetic faculty of the department ofEEE, Dr. K. Chandrasekaran, Associate Dean Planning and Development.

NITPY family has proved yet again to adapt to the testing times by con-ducting classes and assessments online. In order to address the laboratorycourses, the students were recalled to the Institute for a month in staggeredmannerto complete the laboratory sessions and be abreast with the learningprocess. As per the Newsletter reports, the students have excelled both aca-demically and over-all with better campus placement record and contributingto the socially relevant areas. The institute has shown commitment towardspsychological well-being of its staff and students by extending the Memo-randum of Understanding with "Your Dost", an online counseling solutionprovider during this difficult times. We are working towards establishmentof world-class laboratories and infrastructure development. The NITPY familyis strengthened with an addition of twenty eight faculty members in vari-ous departments during this current academic session. The research activitiesare getting stronger as evident from the patents published and filed. I con-gratulate the faculty, staff and students working untiringly and setting highstandards for the youngsters to follow and put NIT Puducherry on the globalarena of technical excellence.

Implementation of coir geo-textilesfor soil erosion control at NIT

Puducherry campus as aneco-sustainable solution

Soil erosion is the process of separating and transport-ing top soil by water, wind, gravity, or other geologicalprocesses which is a serious issue in the campus. Coirgeo-textile is one of the effective natural eco-friendly ero-sion control techniques which can be used in combina-tion with vegetation to provide a composite solution forsoil erosion control. The coir geo-textile with vegetationcover absorbs the impact and kinetic energy of raindropsand reduces the energy transfer to the soil particles whichin turn reduces the surface runoff and control the soil ero-sion. Being a natural biodegradable material, it degradesand improves the vegetation. Once vegetation is estab-lished, the root system act as a soil reinforcement. Thissolution is being implemented in the campus as a solu-tion for soil erosion control.
