Your sacrificial giving and selfless participa- tion over the years have made a deep impact in many nations around the world. Please rejoice in how God moved through fellow VIMM board member and team leader Kirby Phillips in remarkable ways on a recent solo trip to Haiti. Below is Kirby’s remarkable story in his own words... “Now unto him that is able to do abundant- ly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh within us...” Ephesians 3:20,21 As followers of Christ, we have read and heard this verse quoted many times. But we still marvel when God works in ways that surprise us. Such was the case with my recent trip to Haiti, February 26 to March 5th. Proverbs 16:9 says, “ A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the Lord directeth his steps.” We can make plans, but we need the Lord to direct our steps for those plans to succeed. Earlier this year I decided to visit the Village Healthcare Worker (VHW) program in Haiti to see how it was operating and to encourage the workers in their efforts. The program in Haiti was established in July 2020 under the supervision and leadership of Dr. Wilneton Antoine. Currently five (5) villages in the Central Plateau region of Haiti are being served by five (5) trained VHWs and Dr. Antoine. Around 750 Haitians benefit from this program monthly. I also had a second goal for the trip; to visit the large island of Lagonave, off the coast of Haiti. I hope to plan a future medi- cal mission trip here with VIMM. I did not know that God’s plan for this trip would include a full-fledged medical mission using Haitian doctors and nurses to minister to their own hurting people! I am always amazed how God can bring people together on VIMM trips to fulfill his purpose. VIMM was looking for a way to get much needed medicine into Haiti for the VHW program. Since I was traveling to Haiti, I volunteered to deliver a couple suitcases full of medicine. Upon arriving, I made the two-hour trip to the Central Plateau region where the VHWs are working. The next morning at a meeting, one by one the workers expressed their appreciation for the program and the impact that it is having in their communities. After the meeting, we decided to hold a mobile medical clinic at a nearby church. WewerewellreceivedinTiPalmisbythelocals.Overthenext2days,ourteamtreated400patients.TherewasamajorepidemicofscabiesonLagonave.Wewereabletoprovidesomemuchneededreliefandeducatethelocalsonscabiespreven-tion.WeworkedataclinicthatwasbuiltandequippedbyWorldVision.Accordingtothedoctorwhoworkedwithusandhadcompletedhis2-yearresidencythere,theclinicwasonlystaffedbyonedoctorandonenurse,toserveapopulationofover50,000people.Almostunfathomable!
Then,aladyfromthechurchtoldmethatshecouldnotseehersongbookwellenoughtosinganymore.IgaveherapairofglassesandhandedhermyHaitiansongbook.Shelookedatthewordsandstartedsinging,“ToGodbetheglory,greatthingsHehasdone.SolovedHetheworld,thatHegaveusHisSon.” Thenextday,IwenttopreachataHaitianchurchinanothervillage.Aftertheservice,ourHai-tianteamdidanunannouncedsurprisemobileclinic.Wesaw100patients.Itook100CreoleNewTesta-mentswithmetoHaiti.Thischurchhadrecentlyconcludedasuccessfulevangelisticcrusadewith49decisionsforChrist.Iwasabletogivethem49NewTestaments–oneforeachnewbeliever! ToreachtheislandofLagonave,inhabitedbymorethan55,000people,requirestakingaboatfromthemainland.Thetwoprincipalboatswere‘outoforder’.So,ourteamnowconsistingoffourHaitiandoctors,fourHaitiannursesandtwonon-medicalin-dividuals,managedtofindawoodenHaitian“speed-boat”totakethe45-minuterideacrosstheoceanandontotheisland.
