THE KAREN DEWAR MEMORIAL GARDEN FUND BENEFIT' MATCH

A MESSAGE FROM LOCAL COUNCILLOR MAGGIE TAYLOR

On the 20th January 2005 the whole fabric of the town was shaken with the news that sixteen year old Karen Dewar had been murdered.

Karen was a local girl, an only child living with her parents, Frank and Allison.

To commemorate her short life, along with the help of Karen's parents, I decided to see if it was possible to raise money to have a garden built in Tayport in memory of her. I had this costed and found that a rough estimate of £50,000 was needed. The fund was started in September 2006 and through the wonderful generosity of the people of Tayport and further afield, Fife Environmental Trust and others, the fund has now reached nearly £40,000.

With the help of Community Services, Fife Council and Elmwood College in Cupar where Karen was a student, a garden has been designed. The garden will be built on ground in Castle Street, Tayport and as lilac was Karen's favourite colour, flowers and plants will be grown to show this. Hopefully the construction of the garden will be started soon and can then be enjoyed and give pleasure to all who knew Karen.

I would like to say thank you to Tayport Football Club for hosting the game, to East Fife FC for playing and to you for the contribution which you have made in attending the game. It is most appreciated. ~if~*

Such tragedies resulting in the loss of a young vibrant life are not only devastating to the family but to the community as a whole. Tayport still retains its sense of Community spirit nurtured by the many organisations in the town and it is fitting that we should add support to this project which will give ongoing pleasure to many people for years to come whilst reminding us and future generations, young and old, that we all have a part to play in preventing such an event ever happening again.

Tayport - East Fife Conn~~tions

Tayport may never have played East Fife before, but Tayport have played at Bayview - the original Bayview, that is. The occasion was the final of the East Fife Amateurs' Skol League Cup on Monday 29 October 1990. Tayport FC fielded three amateur sides during the 1980s and early 90s and the side which contested the Skol League Cup Final was the 2nd XI which played in the East Fife AFA.

It was to be the last of the eleven East Fife AFA cup finals contested by Tayport during the club's ten year association with Wallace Wright's EFAFA. Eight successive wins took Tayport to the Final that damp Monday evening against Methil's Savoy Hearts. A goal from centre half Alan Gray after only four minutes gave Tayport a 1-0 win to send their supporters amongst the 300 crowd back home happy.

Old Bayview may have disappeared but a small piece of the ground which hold so many memories for so many Fifers lives on here at the Canniepairt in the form of a turnstile. It's been here for a few years since being rescued from a scrappy's yard and we're just waiting for someone to install it!

Several players spring to mind who have worn the colours of both clubs over the last 30 years or so, plus of course Andy Bell, Tayport's former physic, who had the same role at Bayview in the 1970s.

Bobby Waddell (pictured right in April 1981), a League championship winner with Dundee FC in 1962, saw out the twilight of his senior career at Bayview before managing Tayport in the late 70s and then regaining his amateur status to play with the club during the early 1980s.

Willie 'Molly' Brown was transferred to St Johnstone from Tayport in 1985 and later moved on to East Fife where, as was the case with most of his clubs, he became something of a cult figure.

Steve Hutcheon played at Bayview in the mid 90s and was something of a goal machine at the Canniepairt in 1997 and 1998.

Another striker, Graham Nicoll, now at St Andrews United, started his career at East Fife in the late 1990s before spending two seasons, 1999/2001, at Canniepairt.

Heading in the opposite direction a couple of months ago was Lloyd Young who played 63 times for Tayport after signing from Raith Rovers in March 2005. Lloyd is expected to play for East Fife this afternoon

No list would be complete without mention of the current East Fife managerial triumvirate of Dave Baikie, Mel Irons and Derek Carr who all played major roles in the success Tayport FC has enjoyed over the last 16 years

THE KAREN DEWAR M MORIAL GARDEN FUND BENEFIT MATCH

A word from Dave Baikie, former manager of Tayport FC, now manager of East Fife FC .. . . .. .

It was a great honour when I was asked if East Fife Football Club would provide opposition for this afternoon's benefit match in aid of the Karen Dewar Memorial Garden Fund.

As someone who lives in Tayport , I , like everyone else in our community was devastated by the tragic event in January 2005 . Hopefully today's gome can help in some small way.

I must admit it will be a strange feeling for me to manage an opposition side at The Canniepairt, having spent so long plotting the downfall of visiting sides . Still , it has to be done!

The good thing is, I've already got my excuses eg • I just couldn't inflict a defeat on Tayport , could I? •

Although today 's gome is a friendly, I sincerely hope both sides provide entertainment fitting for such an occasion.

May I add that the Chairman and Directors of East Fife Football Club would like to thank Tayport Football Club for the invitation to take part in today 's event and offer , as I do, their heartfelt support for Karen's parents, Frank and Alison Dewar,

Yours

David A Baikie Manager East Fife Football Club

A special thanks to match officials

Kevin Graham Ken Laird Davie Blair

who have very kindly volunteered their services for today's match .
