V-Bite 31st October 2011 Hi Everyone NEWLY REGISTERED VOLUNTEERING OPPORTUNITIES This week we have registered the following new opportunities: 1) Cinecity Festival Steward Volunteer (ID Ref No.262): You will be involved in a variety of activities from assisting at Front of House & Box Office at city wide festival venues to guiding & being a point of contact for film going audiences to contributing to marketing campaigns and assisting with pre-festival mail-out. Note: we are limited as to how many students we can refer to apply to volunteer for this opportunity; please drop-in to see us in the Activities Centre if you are interested in applying. 2) Grace Eyre Theatre/Film Maker Volunteer (ID Ref No.643) Grace Eyre provide day and accommodation services for people with learning disabilities. There are 2 volunteer roles: 1) Theatre Sound and Lighting Support Volunteer – where you support service users to be able to set up basic light shows for future productions and in how to construct stage layout to see how backdrops and scenery can be used; 2) Volunteer Film Maker for Shared Lives -the Shared Lives scheme recruits, trains and matches carers to support people who choose to live with them. The video would be involving carers, staff and service users to give an experiential view of the service. 3) Trust for Developing Communities (TDC) Community Participation Project Volunteer (ID Ref No. 642) TDC seeks to develop relevant services to those communities that it works within. At New Larchwood in Coldean, residents of an extra-care home, many with mobility issues, are encouraged to participate with residents from the area in activities and groups to promote well- being and a sense of community. You should have a willingness to work alongside older and disabled people. You may be required to assist in general duties such as washing up in the Community Café, helping deliver the Residents Association Newsletter, guiding people on Outings or digging at the project's Community Allotment.

4) Community Safety Team Customer Insight Researcher with Brighton and Hove City Council Partnership Community Safety Team (ID Ref No. 631) This is an exciting opportunity to work within the newly intergrated Casework Team in the Partnership Community Safety service. The team which comprises of police and council officers and is recognised nationally for its significant contribution in tackling the harm caused to individuals and communities as a result of hate crime and anti-social behaviour. The project brief is for 2 students to carry out research fieldwork by way of questionnaires and face to face interviews with approximately 100 individuals. Questionnaires and interviews will be conducted with victims who have accessed services from agencies in response to anti-social behaviour and hate crime concerns they have raised. The purpose of the research is to provide a data-set which will form the basis of an annual report entitled Customer insight and experience in Brighton & Hove 2012/13: Anti-social behaviour & Hate Crime. 5) Gladrags Educational Workshop Volunteer (ID Ref No. 645) Gladrags is a charity mainly run by volunteers which provides low-cost costumes (5000 of them)) and related resources (costume-making equipment, costume library and design support service) to community, educational and therapeutic based projects, to support and enrich their work. You will assist on Gladrags educational outreach programme of workshops which are held in local schools and also with marginalised groups, such as young carers, travellers, etc. In addition to the new volunteering opportunities detailed above, the following projects are especially keen to recruit volunteers:

1) Playworker with Brighton & Hove Inclusion Project (ID Ref. No 106) This project provides inclusive play, activities and support for children and young people aged 3-16 with and without special needs. The provision includes a Saturday morning play club, Saturday afternoon youth club, after school club and school holiday clubs. They are looking for volunteers who have a genuine interest in children and their development through play, to assist on the Saturday morning play club. 2) Nacro Youth Work Volunteer (ID Ref. No156) Nacro is a crime reduction charity which has unrivalled expertise in developing effective solutions to crime and stimulating fresh thinking on how best to reduce it. Volunteering with Nacro can offer motivated individuals the opportunity to gain first hand experience of working with diverse and sometimes challenging sectors of the community. As a volunteer, you will support the project's trainer in delivering qualifications in the relevant subject on the project's Foundation Learning programme. Subjects include childcare, construction, art and employability and the project is especially keen to recruit volunteers interested in assisting with their art group.
