VOL : 5 ISSUE III OCTOBER, 20I3 – MARCH, 20I4

It’s been barely a month since he took over as only the third CEO of tech giant Microsoft since it was set up 39

years ago, but Satya Nadella already has Microsoft’s five-year plan chalked out: use software as a driving force

to advance the company’s devices and services(Excerpts from Times of India 10 March 2014). It is really a great

moment of pride for all the Indians that Satya has been chosen to head this world famous company Microsoft.

Think of it, how did it happen? It took many years of consistent hard work, passionate zeal and never-say-die

attitude to reach this pinnacle of glory.

Since the times immemorial our saints and sages have said in their simple manner that,” he only gets who

seeks”. Let us talk about knowledge. What is the source of knowledge? Is it available in the books? Do the

schools provide knowledge? Can you get it from the Internet?

Yes, all these sources do provide you a lot of information. Out of this maze of information, you have to select

what exactly you want? Pick up the information related to the subject which interests you. Talk about it with

your parents, teachers and friends. Try to know more about it. See if you can apply this newly found information

in a new field. Absorb this information till you are fully satisfied that you know all that is required related to this.

Your passion towards learning will help you achieve this knowledge. Remember learning is a life long process.

One has to cultivate a Learning Attitude. Once you develop that attitude, you are bound to become curious

about a variety of things. You will never be confined to the above quoted sources of information. According to a

popular UNESCO Report, one of the four pillars of Education is “Learning to Know”.

Nadella hails Indian talent, saying “…India is a tremendous source of technology talent, both at home and

around the world.” What’s that message you would want to give to young professionals? “Find something you

are truly passionate about, and throw yourself into it fully. Life is too short to just go through the motions on

something you are not truly passionate about. Stay curious, never stop learning.”

ACTIVITIES

Jagranites Achieve Greatness by Using Academics, Responsibility &Self-control.

WAYS TO REDUCE GLOBAL WARMING 1. Green your commute

Transportation causes about 25 per cent of

Canada's greenhouse gas emissions, so walk,

cycle or take transit whenever you can. You'll

save money and get into better shape! If you

can't go car-free, try carpooling or car sharing,

and use the smallest, most fuel-efficient

vehicle possible.

2. Be energy efficient

You already switch off lights — what's next?

Change light bulbs to compact fluorescents or

LEDs. Unplug computers, TVs and other

electronics when not in use.

4. Eat wisely

Buy organic and locally grown foods. Avoid

processed items. And eat low on the food

chain — at least one meat-free meal a day —

since 18 per cent of greenhouse gas emissions

come from meat and dairy production.

5. Trim your waste

Garbage buried in landfills produces methane,

a potent greenhouse gas. Keep stuff out of

landfills by composting kitchen scraps and

garden trimmings, and recycling paper, plastic,

metal and glass. Let store managers and

manufacturers know you want products with

minimal or recyclable packaging.

6. Let polluters pay

Carbon taxes make polluting activities more

expensive and green solutions more

affordable, allowing energy-efficient

businesses and households to save money.

7. Fly less

Air travel leaves behind a huge carbon

footprint. Before you book your next airline

ticket, consider greener options such as buses

or trains, or try vacationing closer to home.

9. Get involved

Take a few minutes to contact your political

representatives and the media to tell them you

want immediate action on climate change.

Remind them that reducing greenhouse gas

emissions will also build healthier

communities, spur economic innovation and

create new jobs. And next time you're at the

polls, vote for politicians who support effective

climate policies. SHABNAM KHATUN CLASS-XI-A

EXTREME WEATHER CONDITIONS

We all know that weather is getting chillier by

the hour. Even the lakes and ponds are

freezing. Let us know the reason for the same.

The reason for the chill is polar vortex.

The polar vortex, as the name suggests, is circulation of strong, upper-level winds that normally surround the northern pole in a counter-clockwise direction. This creates a polar low-pressure system. These upper level winds are responsible to keep the bitter cold air locked in the Arctic regions of the Northern Hemisphere. But at times, this vortex tends to become distorted and dips much farther south than it is normally found. This allows the cold air to spill southward and bring us the icy cold weather in a no more isolated system.

CREATIVE WRITING

Jagranites Achieve Greatness by Using Academics, Responsibility &Self-control.

The upper-level winds that make up the polar vortex change in intensity from time to time. When those winds decrease significantly, it can allow the vortex to become distorted, and the result is a jet stream that plunges deep into southern latitudes, bringing the cold, dense Arctic air spilling down with it. This oscillation is known as the Arctic Oscillation and it can switch from a positive phase to negative phase a few times per year. This oscillation -- namely the negative phase where the polar winds are weaker -- tends to lead to major cold air outbreaks in one or more regions of the planet. The polar vortex can lead to major cold air outbreaks in any portion of the Northern Hemisphere -- North America, Europe and Asia. This will lead to cold snaps in multiple locations, though not necessarily always. ANJALI CHAUHAN

A VISIT TO AN ORPHANAGE

On 22nd January, 2014, four students namely

Arpan Panda, Deepanshi Chauhan, Rajit Ahuja

and myself accompanied by the Principal, Mr.

Pramod Kumar made a visit to the ‘Udyan

Care’, Greater Noida. We collected clothes,

food grains like dal, rice etc. donated by the

students. The students donated generously.

On reaching the orphanage, we met a lady

who solely looked after 45 girls. I was deeply

touched to see her love and support as a

mother, sister and friend. The girls addressed

her as ‘Didi’.

The orphanage is a four storied building- on

the ground floor, we saw a library, a computer

lab. and a research room. The first floor has a

mess where they have their meals. We also

met a girl named Shalu, who had scored 95%

in the boards and is now doing Pharmacy from

Galgotia’s. Despite of all the problems, most of

the girls are studying in reputed schools. These

girls face all the difficulties with a smile. The

visit was a truly inspiring and motivating

experience for us.
