IN TOUCH
King once said, "courage
is the power of the mind
to overcome fear".
Therefore hold firm to
our school’s motto
‘Success Through En-
deavour’ and our cour-
age to strive for excel-
lence. You must believe
in your ability to over-
come this seemingly for-
midable task ahead, be-
cause your teachers have
prepared you well for
this. It is now time for you
to prove to yourselves
that you have what it
takes to overcome this
challenge. All of us from
the school wish you all
the best in your coming
examinations.
Lastly, to our soon-to-be
alumni, we look forward
to you keeping in touch
with the school. Do con-
tinue to foster closer ties
with the school by join-
ing the school alumni so
that you can build a
stronger alumni that can
contribute to the well-
being of all BDSians.
Welcome to Term 4. We
have only recently cele-
brated our SG50 and we
should all be proud of
what Singapore has
achieved in the last fifty
years. Singapore has
come a long way in the
last 50 years and the suc-
cess that we enjoy today
is due to the sheer deter-
mination and hard work
of our past generations
and, in particular, our
pioneer generation, to
make Singapore a better
place. Our older genera-
tions had put their hearts
and souls to build the
Singapore of today be-
cause they had the firm
belief that Singapore has
the potential to be much
more than a slum or a
land of mudflats. As stu-
dents, you must also
have the same strong
belief that you have the
potential to create a bet-
ter future for yourselves
and Singapore.
You will soon be sitting
for your year-end exami-
nations. To help you do
well, our teachers have
been working very hard
to build a strong founda-
tion in your studies. Al-
ways believing in giving
their best, your teachers
have never waived from
their duty to guide and
develop you. Your par-
ents are behind you too.
They together with your
teachers will continue to
be there for you, to pro-
vide that additional assis-
tance you need to suc-
ceed academically. The
rest is up to you now.
You must approach your
examinations focussed,
well-prepared and with
confidence so that you
can achieve good re-
sults.
Graduating students will
see their secondary
school journey in BDS
coming to an end after
their preliminary exami-
nations. The task ahead
to do well at the national
examinations may look
daunting. Martin Luther

On 26 July 2015, our
school took part in the
Youth Celebrate! and
Official Opening of the
Singapore Sports Hub.
This event which was co-
organised by the Minis-
try of Education and the
Ministry of Culture, Com-
munity and Youth, was
officiated by the Guest-of
-Honour, Prime Minister
Mr Lee Hsien Loong.
This was a special event
for Singapore youth to
the East Zone at the Na-

the joint sports event.
Led by our HOD PE/
CCA, Mr Wilbert Tan as
the Team Manager, the
E2 team defeated North
Zonal Champions 5-0 and
then beat West Zonal
Champions 3-1 in the
finals. Most importantly,
through the regular train-
ings, the team forged
strong friendship and
respect for one another’s
differences. The team

Event 1: Mass Dance Display
Our dancers’ experience
during the SG50 Youth
Celebrate and the Open-
ing of the Singapore
Sports Hub was unforget-
table indeed. Through-
out their journey in train-
ing for the mass display,
our dancers learnt a lot
about resilience and
team bonding. Since it
was a mass display, our
students learnt that team-
work, cooperation and
communication were
very important in deter-
mining the success of
their performance.
They also had the chance
to bond together not only
with the various dance
groups in BDS, but also
with those from other
schools.
This invaluable experi-
ence had further helped
each and every one of
our dancers to be a more
confident and disciplined
in future upcoming
events.
40 dancers from our
Dance Society and Malay
Dance were honoured to
have been specially cho-
sen to perform as part of
the largest item in the
mass display entitled
“Electrolites” for the
SG50 celebrations.
Our dancers started
practising as early as in
November 2014. Since
then, numerous training
sessions have been held,
mainly at PESTA.

Our school celebrated
the nation’s 50th birthday
all donning in red and
white on 6 Aug 2015. The
event started with the
march-in by the various
uniformed groups with
the Singapore and school
flags. This was followed
by the singing of the Na-
tional Anthem and saying
of the National Pledge.
Two student emcees led
the school on the
‘Recollections’ segment,
recounting the key phas-
es in Singapore’s history.
The morning assembly
then ended with the mass
singing of ‘My People,
My Home’.
For the second segment, our staff and students immersed themselves in an enjoyable session, building their own idea of future Singapore using the ‘Build My SG’ Lego sets. The highlight of the cele-bration was the concert.
Splendid performances were put up by the various dance groups, together with a skit on the things that make us Singaporean and a video montage on well wishes for Singapore. Thor-oughly enjoyable was the sing-along session which focused on love for our na-tion. This session provided great bonding moments among students and teach-ers as many voices cho-rused together as a single BDS voice.

enjoyed the interac-tion and camarade-rie with students from other schools. A talk by celebrity photographer Rus-sell Wong wrapped up the event, further stirring the students’ interest in photog-raphy.
Singapore Youth Photography Conference
On 1st Aug 2015, students in PA, Art Club and pho-tography interest group from our school partici-pated in Singapore Youth Photography Conference held at Anglo-Chinese Independent School. The students were randomly grouped with students from other schools, and were sent off to capture

Teachers’ Day Celebration
This year, the appoint-ment of trainee pre-fects took place on 8 July. Nomination of trainee prefects began in April and the nomi-nated candidates had to seek endorsement from their parents and teachers. Shortlisted candidates were then interviewed before
they were appointed as trainee prefects. These trainee prefects are equipped with leadership skills and much is expected from them to be good role
models for their peers. As trainee prefects, they are expected to:
1. be good am-bassadors for the school 2. demonstrate a keen sense of duty 3. be positive role-models for other students 4. show a good attitude towards CCA and academic studies
National Inter-School Floorball Championships
2015: C Division
Our ‘C’ Division Floor-
ballers have done our
school proud as they
made their way to the
National School Games
Finals after many rounds
of fierce competitions.
This is the first time our
team in BDS has finished
as 1st Runner-Up since
the school team was
formed 8 years ago. It
was not an easy feat con-
sidering the increasing
competitiveness among
schools as floorball gains
wider interest over the
past few years.
To better support our
school team, transport
was provided for all stu-
dents who wished to sup-
port the floorballers dur-
ing the semi-finals. Our
student leaders also took
the initiatives to motivate
our supporters in cheer-
ing for our players at the
games.
The school is proud of
what the boys have
achieved through perse-
verance, grit and deter-
mination throughout the
season. For the boys' ex-
cellent efforts, they will
be receiving the SSSC
National Colours Award.

President’s Award for Teachers
IN TOUCH
The school would like to congratulate Mdm Hali-mah Bte Jumaha for being 1 of the 6 teachers who received the prestigious President’s Award for Teachers this year. A total of 7,820 nominations for 2,717 teachers were re-ceived from school lead-
ers, teachers, parents, students (both former and current). The recipients were then selected and shortlisted for interviews and considerations by a panel comprising promi-nent community members and senior officials from the Ministry of Education,
chaired by Mr Lim Biow Chuan, Chairman of the Government Parliamen-tary Committee for Educa-tion. Once again, we con-gratulate Mdm Halimah for her continual dedica-tion to the holistic devel-opment of our students.
This year, the Prefectorial Board came up with the theme “SHINE” for the Teachers’ Day Celebra-tion. Performers were se-lected from various clas-ses to put up a variety of impressive performances to celebrate the occasion . The Prefectorial Board and the Peer Leaders worked hand-in-hand to plan and
execute the Teachers’ Day Celebration. Besides, the Peer Leaders took the ini-tiatives to liaise with all the class chairmen to come up with the celebra-tion programme for their form teachers during the FT Time on 3 Sept 2015. In addition, the student population was also en-couraged to vote for their
teachers for awards such as The Most Caring Teach-er Award and The Most Inspiring Teacher Award. Interesting awards such as The Loudest Teacher Award and The Fittest Teacher Award were also included. The teachers were delighted and they enjoyed themselves tre-mendously at the celebra-tion concert.
