Learning Objectives

LO: To be able calculate areas of rectangles and rectilinear shapes. (Level 4/5)

Good if you can calculate areas by counting squares.

Even better if you can work out rectangles area using the formula.

Excellent if you can work out the areas of rectilinear shapes.

Olympic Area

Counting Squares

A square cm has a length of 1 cm. We say that it has an area of 1 cm2 ( 1 cm squared).

This rectangle contains six squares. Each of the squares has an area of 1cm2, so the area of the rectangle is 6cm2.

QuestionsCount the squares, to find the area of the Olympic boxing ring.

Compound Area

There are two methods to work out the area of a shape. Method 1• Divide the shape into separate squares and

rectangles.• Work out the area of each separate one and

then add them together.

Example

Compound Area

Method 2• Imagine the area as a huge rectangle with a

shape cut out.• Find the area of the large rectangle and

subtract it by the area of the part which is cut out.
