THE POSITION

This position serves as a Forestry Technician (timber sale prep) crew member performing presale duties including, but not limited to: Timber marking by independently applying silvicultural prescriptions and marking guides to designate harvest timber, timber cruising by independently applying the instructions issued in a cruise plan, determines defect in standing trees, preparing and inputting cruise data, and timber sale unit layout.On average, the Bend/Fort Rock Ranger District produces 30 MMBF across 6,000 to 8,000 acres annually and the Crescent Ranger District produces 10 MMBF across 1,500 acres annually.Much of the work involves timber marking. Applicants must be able to interpret complex silvicultural prescriptions and marking guides, bringing to the attention of responsible individuals situations on the ground that are inconsistent with the prescription or marking guide. Good communication skills, a positive attitude and strong work ethic are highly desirable along with knowledge of forest measurement tools and techniques including the use of Spiegel Relaskop, clinometer, laser measurement tools, Trimble GPS, map and compass and prism. Full performance of this position includes certification as a Region 6 Certified Timber Cruiser. Applicants who possess or are working on this certification should highlight that in their resume and as part of the outreach response. Some of the work occurs in the winter and requires off-road winter travel, often on snowmobiles.

ABOUT THE AREA (Bend)The City of Bend is a rapidly-growing metropolitan area located in the central portion of the state, on the east side of the Cascade Mountains. This “High Desert” community is a full-service community that serves as a hub for medical, educational, recreation and entertainment needs for a large geographic area in Central Oregon. Tourism plays an important role in the local economy and regional economy. The City of Bend is located in the central part of the state of Oregon. The major highways intersecting in town are US97 and US20. The population is around 75,000 in the city with approximately 50,000 living within an hour drive. The community hosts several theaters, has a vibrant downtown, has an active summer concert committee which host various visiting orchestras and conductors, has a community theater, many excellent restaurants, hotels and bed-and-breakfast establishments. There are numerous city and county parks in and adjacent to town; a public library; full service medical and dental facilities; four large shopping malls; a country club, 20-plus public and private golf courses and numerous denominations of church. ABOUT THE AREA (Crescent): Crescent is located 50 miles south of Bend, Oregon, 17 miles south of La Pine, Oregon and 90 miles north of Klamath Falls, Oregon, at the crossroads of Highway 97 and Highway 58 in Central Oregon. Crescent is a small community in Klamath County, and is the southernmost District of the Deschutes National Forest, comprised of approximately 315,000 acres. A small portion of this acreage is located in the Diamond Peak Wilderness and the Oregon Cascade Recreation Area.The elevation of the District ranges from 4,300 to about 8,740 feet at the mountain tops. The weather varies during the summer from warm days to cool nights and often has below freezing temperatures during the winter. The landscape is dominated by lodgepole pine and ponderosa pine and at higher elevations by mixed conifer to subalpine-alpine vegetation. Dominant shrubs are bitterbrush in the lower elevations and snowbrush at the higher elevations.

The District has a variety of recreation opportunities to offer. There are 130 lakes on the District. The larger lakes are Odell, Crescent, Summit, and Davis. There are also several streams which provide varied fishing opportunities. Other recreation opportunities include hiking, camping, hunting, scenic viewing, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing.
