Wondering what to expect at Celebrate 50! Reunion 2015? Then why not take a few minutes and join

us for a sneak preview of this grand birthday celebration for Up with People? We’ll take you day by day through the official reunion events planned for August 4 through August 9, 2015 and let you know how you can add your voice to the planning and production process.

On Tuesday, day one of Celebrate 50!, guests arriving at Orlando International Airport can hop a special UWP shuttle to our reunion home base, the beautiful Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort. No need to rent a car if you don’t want to, as there is plenty of free transportation between the hotel and key locations in Walt Disney World. Once you’ve settled into your room, spend the evening meeting up with all your friends at Era receptions held throughout the resort. Following the Era receptions, the 2015 Gala Event produced by Up with People will be available for those who would like to support the global work of UWP financially. (This is an separately-ticketed item. Check the Up with People website for details.)

On Wednesday, we’ll kick things off with a fast-paced, rock-the-house opening ceremony that we are calling “A Gathering of Nations.” It will be an international extravaganza worthy of

this golden anniversary. We’re leaving the rest of the day open for you to spend time with your castmates and families, whether that means hanging out by the beautiful pools or taking in all the sites Walt Disney World and Orlando have to offer. UWPIAA volunteers are happy to assist in arranging meals and gathering sites for your Cast or Era.

Try to get a good night’s sleep because Thursday is action-packed. The members of Up with People Cast B 2015 will be on hand throughout the reunion (you won’t want to miss their big show Saturday night), and on Thursday and Friday, you’re invited to join them in local community impact projects around the city. If you prefer something more cerebral, we’re planning some fantastic speakers who will address a variety of topics such as global leadership, cultural fusion or personal development. If you would like to be considered as a Celebrate 50! speaker, please send an email to reunion2015@uwpiaa.

org with your name and the subject that you want to address, as well as your experience at public speaking and presenting these issues. Representatives of Up with People and UWPIAA will also offer insights into the future of each organization. Be a part of the all-important dialogue

On August 6, 2015, Up with People turns 50 years old and UWPIAA is hosting a birthday party, as only alumni can.

The first UWP show (as recorded in the internal publication, Tomorrow’s American) took place on August 6, 1965 in Stamford, Connecticut. Since that time approximately 22,000 youth have travelled the world in Up with People. In that first year alone, 1.5 million people were in the audiences of three national touring casts as they travelled some 190,000 miles. An hour-long TV presentation was viewed by 10 million. And that was just the beginning. (I was 15 and an exuberant member of Cast B towards the end of that first year, after beginning my experience with Sing-Out Cincinnati!)

Every single person who has been involved in the UWP program or its affiliates from day one is invited to Celebrate 50!–every cast, crew or staff member of the Up with People shows, WorldSmart crews, local or international Sing-Outs, Pace and Maverick magazine staff, MRA members and students of Mackinac College and Camp Up with People. Of course, we are extending a very special invitation to our host families who, for decades, have opened their homes around the world to us, and to our own family and friends who made it possible for us to travel. UWP’s corporate sponsors who understood and supported the vision of Up with People are gratefully invited, too. Help us spread the word to them about this very special event!

You probably already know that each year UWPIAA sponsors an alumni reunion that focuses on the casts celebrating five-year anniversaries. The reunions are full of great production moments that recall our own days on the road and include us in the current UWP program through special performances and community involvement opportunities. Alumni are connected and reconnected as we celebrate our mutual past and discuss its impact on our lives after our time of travel.

Celebrate 50! Reunion 2015 will retain some of the best elements of our annual reunions, but this will be a grand gathering of friends and family unlike any UWPIAA members or their affiliates have seen before. And that’s why we have put together this special Celebrate 50! insert for UpBeat: to give you a sneak peek at all that Celebrate 50! has in store. Celebrate the past, enjoy the present and launch the future!

Read on, and you will get a sense of all the wonderful plans that are underway. Keith Frohreich, president of UWPIAA, has enacted a special committee to manage the event that we, Vickie

Henthorn Law and “T” McCreary, are privileged to lead. Some of the greatest creative minds in UWP history are on board: Ken Ashby, Lynne Morris and Maris Segal, along with Eric Lentz and his team, will produce and showcase memorable moments of UWP shows.

Remember, Celebrate 50! Reunion 2015 is everyone’s reunion year! We want to keep you apprised and involved. For the next year, watch UWPIAA publications and websites for the latest news. Our hard-working Era Reps will be your conduits for information and requests so your voice can be heard. UWP’s incredible past will be showcased in special exhibits coordinated by Bonnie Knight and the Archives Committee and John Gonzalez and his team will create a multimedia journey through 50 years of UWP history called, “The Journey - A History of Up with People”. Awards will be given, achievement recognized and music, music, music will fill the five days of celebration.

We will have an impressive roster of speakers who will address such topics as UWP’s global leadership role and presentations by current Up with People administrators to give you insight into the organization’s future plans, development opportunities and the UWP vision for its second 50 years.

Speaking of the future, our very first group of alumni from Camp Up with People for 13-to-17 year olds will be on hand to perform, giving us a glimpse at the next generation of UWP cast members. And for our last night together, Cast B2015 will share their Golden Anniversary show followed by a spectacular, multigenerational “Future Finale.”

Registration is now open. Make your plans now to attend this fantastic birthday celebration!

Remember, early registration is $395 per adult. That is a $100 discount over full registration of $495 that will go into effect on April 1, 2015. There is also one more chance to establish a savings plan and pay for the reunion by installment. On June 1, a 12-month plan will be available until July 31. For a plan that covers registration, airport transfer and the entire cost of the room, the payment will be $114 per month for 12 months. If you have a roommate who also signs up for the plan, he or she can split the room costs and pay $76 a month for 12 months but both of you must sign up for the plan.

Once you have registered, you will get a confirmation email from Eventinterface. This email will have a link to the hotel where you can reserve your room for the event at the special rate of $149 per night plus taxes and fees. This room rate will go up to $159 per night beginning October 1, 2014 so it behooves you to register now and get your room at the guaranteed lower rate. By the way, this special hotel rate is good for the week before and the week after the reunion if you want to make a longer holiday out of it with the family. That way you save $150 between registration and the room if you make the commitment early.

regarding the future of each of these organizations as we move into the next 50 years of Up with People.

And don’t forget to make time for a ““The Journey - A History of Up with People;” a walk-through, multimedia exhibit that traces the 50-year span of Up with People with images, collectibles and video presentations. Archived materials from the UWPIAA and the University of Arizona special collections will also be displayed. And we hope you’ll also spend a quiet moment of reflection in the tranquil Memorial Room, a place to remember the castmates and friends who have gone before us. These special areas will be open throughout Celebrate 50!

Any golfers out there? A Celebrate 50! golf tournament is being discussed for Thursday or Friday, but we need at least 72 players to make it happen. Email us and let us know if that is an event in which you would like to participate. Of course, we know a lot of you will want to take advantage of the fantastic Walt Disney World attractions. In the coming months, watch your UWPIAA news sources for a direct link to purchase discounted admission tickets for the parks. And tell your kids and teens to save a little energy, because they’ll want to join in the Cast K and Cast T activities and performances.

Thursday, August 6 is the 50th anniversary of the first Up with People show, and we will mark it with a delicious sit-down banquet and an exciting awards ceremony saluting alumni who have continued the tradition of Up with People in their post-tour lives. After that, we’ll be throwing the Biggest Birthday Party ever, produced by Eric Lentz and his team from UWP and featuring our Era participants presenting UWP favorites.

On Friday, you can take your pick of speakers, community projects or just hang with friends before enjoying an early evening

poolside barbecue. On Friday night, it’s “Time for the Music!” This amazing show will feature the top 50 UWP songs of all time, as selected by 2,000 alumni voters and presented by a cast of 200 alumni. If you want to perform in this cast, let us know and we will send you an application. We are looking for singers, dancers, and crew from all the shows over the years who can show up the Friday before the reunion begins. Musicians are especially needed, so get in touch with us, please!

Saturday will come before you know it, so we’ve set aside lots of free time for goodbyes and the exchange of contact info with all your old and new friends. And that night, it’s the new kids’ turn to entertain you, so sit back and enjoy a just-for-you performance by Cast B2015 of Up with People’s 50th anniversary show. Then, cap off the evening with a “Future Finale,” sending UWP off into the next 50. This multi-generational celebration will touch your heart and illustrate the future of Up with People and your part in it.

Sunday is the official checkout day, but with all that Walt Disney World has to offer and with the great discounted rate being offered by the resort both before and after the formal reunion dates, we bet you’ll want to extend your stay and enjoy a bit more time in sunny Florida. Official reunion activities may be over, but we hope the excitement of renewing those lifelong friendships and the joy of looking back at UWP’s history and forward to its next 50 years will stay with you for a long, long time.

Do you have additional ideas for Celebrate 50! activities? Questions? We’d love to hear from you. Email us at [email protected]. Registration is now open at www.eventinterface.com/uwpiaareunion2015registration. See you in Orlando in 2015!
