About UVa-Wise
The University of Virginia’s College atWise, formerly Clinch Valley College of theUniversity of Virginia, is an incredible exampleof the determination and perseverance ofSouthwest Virginia citizens. Before theCollege was established, there were no publiccolleges in Virginia west of Radford.
Higher education was simply out of reachfor most residents of Virginia’s AppalachianMountains.
When local residents Fred B. Greear,William A. Thompson, Kenneth P. Asbury, andothers made their case to University ofVirginia President Colgate Darden forestablishing a college in Wise, theCommomwealth of Virginia supported thecause by offering $5,000 to open, staff, andoperate the two-year school for the first year.
Local supporters donated over $6,000 tofurnish and equip the classrooms.
Wise County donated property and twosandstone buildings, remnants of the countypoor farm, to house the first classes. All ofthese events happened in the winter of 1954.In September of that same year, Clinch ValleyCollege opened its doors to 109 full-timestudents.
Many of the first classes of graduates
went on to the University and other seniorinstitutions and became some of the region’smost successful professionals. As moregraduates of the two-year college expressedtheir preference to stay closer to home tocomplete their baccalaureate degrees, theCollege began the process to become asenior institution.
The College first granted Bachelor of Artsdegrees in June 1970. Bachelor of Sciencedegrees were first awarded in 1973. Bachelorof Science in Nursing degrees were firstawarded in 1996.
Approximately 7,700 students havereceived baccalaureate degrees in one ormore of the College’s academic disciplines.
Perhaps the most significant event in theCollege’s recent history is its adoption of anew name. On July 1, 1999, followingpassage of legislation by the Virginia GeneralAssembly, Clinch Valley College became TheUniversity of Virginia’s College at Wise.
Having celebrated its 50th anniversary in2004, the small college once nicknamed“Poor Farm University” is a vibrant seniorinstitution ranked by U.S. News and WorldReport as one of the nation’s top ten publicliberal arts colleges.

Stallard Field - “Home of the Cavs”
On February 20th of 2004, the inaugural baseball game was played on the new Burchell
“Slew” Stallard Field. UVA-Wise claimed the first victory in that first game with a 7-3 defeat of
Bluefield College.
The stellar facility has become a favorite to all teams and more importantly the Cavs to play
upon. The baseball teams no longer have the same worries as with the old Alumni Field, which
was on the same location as the new field. The old field was notorious among players and
coaches for its poor playing conditions.
Stallard Field gives no such fears with its meticulously manicured infield and the soft,
smooth bluegrass outfield. The beautiful field is now the proud home of Cavalier baseball for
many years to come and a true place incoming recruits would love to spend their collegiate
careers on a minor league baseball quality facility.

Tough, resilient, respect,
bold, discipline, scholar,
dependable, patient, leader,
coach, player; all are some of
the many words that could be
used to illustrate qualities of
one of the great coaching
legends of the Wise County,
Virginia area.
Coach Burchell “Slew” Stallard was one of
the best coaching generals for many decades.
Coach was known for his strictness but
caring wholeheartedly for his players that he
continued the relationship with “his boys” long
after the players had moved on in their lives.
“A tall man with a great big heart as
described by one of his former teachers,
Stallard made his mark leading many
championship football and baseball teams at
Grundy, Big Stone Gap, Powell Valley and
Coeburn High Schools.
“I had several championship teams, but I
am proudest of the champions I helped to
educate in the classroom - for life,” quoted his
wife, Lloe, of the late-coach who passed along
in the spring of 2000.
The Milligan College “Hall of Fame”
member and alum was named as one of the
five UVA-Wise ‘Coaching Legends’ in 2001.
The Highland Cavalier baseball field was
named in his honor in March of 2004.
Former Stallard player and disciple, Ray
Spenilla said, “Lloe Stallard’s contribution in
memory of Coach Stallard to help ‘his boys’
along with countless contributions from others
have made the new ballpark a point of pride
for the College and its supporters.”
The UVA-Wise Burchell “Slew” Stallard
Scholarship was also started in 2002 to help a
student-athlete. The scholarship fund has
already assisted former baseball players Brad
Hall, Will Nance and Jason Matlock along with
current Cavs’ player Brad Robbins.

Athletic Director
After moving up into the NCAA DI ranks three years ago,
Danny Sterling returned "home" this summer to spearhead the
UVa-Wise athletic department as the new Director of Athletics.
The new Highland Cavalier athletic director has spent the
past three years at Longwood University after being an 11-year
member of the UVa-Wise athletic staff. While with the Lancers
athletic department, Sterling saw his role and responsibilities
consistently increase to holding the associate athletic director
for internal operations position.
The increased role and duties within the Longwood athletic
department will be very important to aid UVa-Wise in its upcoming changes. The Cavs will
be entering one of their most exciting and challenging times over the next few years with
switching to the Mid-South Conference, building the new campus convocation center and
continuing the growth and development of the athletic department.
Upon leaving the Wise campus, Sterling accepted the head athletic trainer position, as
part of the senior administration staff, with the Lancers in January of 2006. Along with
being the athletic training department director, he assisted the NCAA Division I certification
and reclassification process.
After one year, he was promoted to the assistant director of athletics for business
operations. In the position, Sterling had direct supervision of ticket sales and marketing,
athletic training department, strength and conditioning and laundry operations. He also
oversaw the men's tennis, women's tennis and field hockey programs along with event
operations, game management and management for human resources and capital
planning.
In what was his final move, Sterling transitioned into the associate athletic director for
internal operations. He took on the responsibility of being the main controller of the athletic
department budget and all of its duties.
Sterling will look to pick up where long-time athletic director Ray Spenilla left the
department in a strong state of affairs. The new athletic director started his first tenure with
UVa-Wise as the head athletic trainer in 1995 and served in the capacity for all of his 11
years. In 2004, he was promoted to assistant director of athletics/head athletic trainer.
Sterling helped oversee the day-to-day operations, assist with construction projects and
directly supervised many of the athletic department staff members.
Sterling left the area the first time to earn his bachelor of science degree in health and
physical education (exercise science) from Virginia Tech in 1994. He went on to received
his master of science degree in health and physical education (motor behavior/sports
studies) also at Virginia Tech three years later before accepting his the head training
position with UVa-Wise.
The return to UVa-Wise athletics will be not only a second term with the department but
a true trip back home. Sterling is a native of nearby Pound, Va. and his wife, Kim, who is
a graduate of UVa-Wise, is from Norton, Va. The two have one daughter, Marley.

Coaching Staff
Veteran baseball head coach Hank Banner will
enter the 2010 season needing 26 wins to eclipse
the 300 win plateau. Meanwhile, the program
needs 23 victories to reach 500 wins since 1986.
Throughout his tenure, Banner’s squads have
been known for consistency. The Highland
Cavaliers have posted at least 20 victories in five
consecutive seasons. Over that period UVa-Wise
has posted two 30 win seasons to go along with
back to back third places finishes in the NAIA
Region XII Tournament.
Highlighting Banner’s tenure are the teams
produced during the 2006-2008 seasons. Over
those three seasons the team combined for a
91-59-1 mark (.606). The 2007 team finished
fourth in the AAC regular season, fourth in the
conference tournament, and returned the Highland
Cavaliers to the NAIA Region XII Tournament for
the first time in five years. The 2007 Cavs’ hold the
school record for most wins in a season at 32.
The 14th year head coach became the
winningest coach in school history when UVa-Wise
defeated Alderson-Broaddus on March 21, 2007
by the score of 5-0. Banner currently stands at 274 victories over 13 seasons,
averaging over 21 wins per campaign.
The 2010 season will provide Banner with a challenging schedule as
UVa-Wise will face four ranked or receiving votes squads in the national poll. All
AAC players Brad Robbins (Sr.), Luis Roa (Jr.), and three more seniors which
include catcher Adam Skoranski, third baseman Dusty Haigler, and utility Billy
Thompson will lead this year’s team.
Banner is a 1992 graduate of UVa-Wise. While a student, the coach was a
four-year member of the Cavaliers’ baseball team and started at second base on
the 1989 and 1990 conference championship teams.
His wife, Bridgette, also graduated from UVa-Wise. The couple and their
daughter, Brooke, live in nearby Castlewood, Virginia.

of directing the Highland Cavalier pitching staff.
The former standout hurler for J.J. Kelly High School in
Wise, Virginia brings a wealth of experience to the coaching
staff. Bates was selected in the 12th-round by the Atlanta
Braves. He played four seasons in the Braves and St. Louis
Cardinals minor league organizations.
He and his wife, Tammy, and their daughter, Brianna,
live in Wise. The couple’s son Brandon (2003-06) pitched
four years for the Cavs and recorded 12 wins.

Erik Lemley begins his second season as an assistant
coach at UVa-Wise. Lemley serves as the hitting coach and
recruiting coordinator for the Highland Cavalier baseball
team.
Lemley returned to UVa-Wise after spending two years
away from the campus. The former Cavs’ catcher has
brought a tireless work ethic to the coaching staff and
recruiting trail. Last season, UVa-Wise hitters posted a .329
batting average under Lemley’s leadership.
The Chantilly, Virginia native previously taught World
History while coaching high school baseball at Notre Dame
Academy in Middleburg, Virginia. While at Notre Dame he served as an assistant on their
2007 squad that posted a 32-4 record on the way to a VISBA State Championship. In
2008, Lemley took over the head coaching duties, leading the school to a 15-13 record.
The four year UVa-Wise catcher had a solid career for the Highland Cavaliers.

2010 Cavs Season Preview
The 2010 Highland Cavaliers will look to
get off to a fast start this season. Last
season, the team dropped 13 of their first
17 contests. Despite the slow start the
Cavs’ rallied to finish the season just one
game below the .500 mark at 23-24.
This year UVa-Wise will look for a fast
start by playing a more balanced schedule.
The Cavs’ will open up the 2010 campaign
at home for a double header against Rio
Grande on February 6th. The following
week UVa-Wise will host Southern Virginia
for another double header contest. In all,
the Highland Cavaliers will play six of their
first 10 games at Burchell Stallard Field.
The Highland Cavaliers will look
towards senior Brad Robbins, who holds
the all time home run record at the college,
and junior Luis Roa, an All-AAC selection a
year ago for leadership. The duo combined
to hit .404 with 15 home runs, 29 doubles,
and 98 rbi last season. Complementing
Robbins and Roa in the projected lineup will
fall upon the shoulders of seniors catcher
Adam Skoranski, third baseman Dusty
Haigler and first baseman Billy Thompson
with junior outfielder Brad Ricker and
sophomore second baseman Cody
Bentley.
The UVa-Wise pitching staff returns a
core group of veterans while adding several
newcomers to the mix in 2010. Left hander
D’Andre Bussey returns for his third
season in a UVa-Wise uniform. Fellow
junior Scott Cole however, will miss the
2010 season due to a medical red shirt.
Despite losing Cole, UVa-Wise will have a
handful of returners and newcomers to
choose from to help carry the load.
Bentley is poised to accept more
innings as a starter. Transfer Ryan Crosby
will be counted upon to pitch weekend
games with Robbins seeing innings as a
starter four a fourth season. Redshirt
freshman Josh Guizar and sophomore
Jonathan Hawkins are slated to start
games as well.
11
The bullpen will be anchored by junior
Josh Joseph. Joseph is slated to start the
season as the closer. In addition, the
bullpen will return crafty lefty Preston
Smith, to go along with a pair of
sophomores in Stephen Kanode and
Chris Smith.
Freshman Logan Arey, Caleb Naff,
Ryan Ward, and Jonathan Cox will round
out the Cavalier Bullpen.
In the infield, UVa-Wise should field a
strong defensive lineup. At first base,
Thompson, Robbins and Brian King will
split time. The three will also see time as
the designated hitter.
In the middle infield, Bentley will return
for his second season at second base
while occupying a middle of the order spot
in the lineup. He hit .352 with eight
doubles, five home runs and 28 rbi.
Taking over short stop, freshman
Danny Bates is set to take the middle of
the left side of the infield. Bates will be
counted on to make routine plays up the
middle and try to be a consistent hitter at
the plate.
Haigler is back for a second stint at
third base and has worked hard to improve
his range. Newcomer Taylor Jones will
provide backup for Haigler while giving a
solid pinch hit option to the bench.
Behind the plate, Skoranski will hold
down the catcher position. Skoranski had
a perfect fielding percentage in 2009 while
hitting .289 with a pair of homers. Tommy
Meier and Kirby Bush will provide
Skoranski relief behind the plate.
The Highland Cavalier outfield will be
home to some of the quickest players in the
AAC. Utility man Luis Roa can play all
three outfield positions. A complete player,
Roa hit over .407 and drove in 34 runs.
Flanking Roa in the outfield will be
juniors Ricker and Alex Feemster, who
both have lightning speed and range in the
field. Both outfielders bring excitement to
the plate as well with their speed as each
player is capable of beating out ground
balls for base hits and consistently bunting
for hits.
Head coach Hank Banner will have
freshman Brett Hylton slated to get the
early nod in right field. He can provide a
power bat to the outfield as well as
covering the need ground defensively.
A healthy Billy Fox will see time in the
outfield and as a pinch runner.

Appalachian Athletic Conference playoffs.
The Highland Cavaliers went into a fourth
game in the tournament and moved from
seventh in the regular season to fifth in the
AAC tournament to wrap up the season.
Head coach Hank Banner’s crew defeated
Virginia Intermont, fell to #14 Union, and
upset King College before dropping an
elimination game to NCCAA World Series
team Bluefield College.
The highlight of the 2009 regular
season occurred on the final home
weekend of the season. After falling 7-5 in
game one of a three game set against
nationally ranked Union College, UVa-Wise
would out slug Union in game 2. The Cavs
used big days from senior Edwin Narvaez
(2-4, 4 rbi) and junior Brad Robbins (2-3, 5
rbi) to put 14 runs up against the Bulldogs.
Sophomore closer Josh Joseph came in to
pitch two scoreless innings to secure the
win for UVa-Wise.
Individually, sophomore outfielder Luis
Roa was the Cavs (23-24) lone All-AAC
selection while leading the team with a
.407 average, 52 runs, 16 doubles, .519 on
base pct. and 15 stolen bases.
Robbins set the UVa-Wise career home
run record in the early part of the year and
has 33 in three years. He hit .403 with 10
homers and set a new season record with
64 rbi.
Seniors Matt Duffy, Mike Lang, and
Narvaez concluded their careers with
productive seasons. Duffy collected 51 hits
on way to a .321 batting average while
knocking in 35 runs. The Martinsville,
Virginia native was equally impressive in
the field. During the 2009 season, Duffy
started at 3 positions posting a fielding
percentage of .988.
Narvaez wrapped up his four year
career by moving from second base to
shortstop. He played in and started 45
games in 2009, batting .279 while
collecting six extra base hits. Throughout
his career, the Puerto Rico product came
through with clutch hits. In 2008, his home
run against Tennessee Wesleyan helped
propel UVa-Wise to a victory over the AAC
regular season champions. Narvaez again
came up big against a ranked foe in 2009.
His four rbi performance against Union
College helped UVa-Wise score 14 runs
against the eventual national tournament
participant.
In 2009, Lang had his most productive
season as a Cavalier. The four-year starter
had a career high in batting average, .321
and was perfect nine for nine in stolen base
attempts.
Junior Brad Austin made his second
consecutive Academic All-AAC Team.
Despite a losing record, the 2009
season continued a trend of recent
success. For the third consecutive year
UVa-Wise played four or more postseason
games. UVa-Wise will enter the new
decade with a returning group of core
players poised to continue their recent
trend.

The Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) is a ten-member conference
sanctioned by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). The
league has members in Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.
The AAC sponsors six men’s sports and six women’s sports. For men, the
conference offers championships in: baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer
and tennis. For women, championships are awarded in: basketball, cross country,
soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball.
In May of 2003, the AAC selected John Sullivan as its first-ever Commissioner.
Prior to taking the post, Sullivan served as Montreat College’s athletic director for
six years and was named AAC and NAIA Region XII Athletic Director of the Year in
2000.

Since 1937, the NAIA has administered programs and championships in proper balance
with the overall educational experience. In 2000, the NAIA reaffirmed its purpose to
enhance the character-building aspects of sport. Through Champions of Character, the
NAIA seeks to create an environment in which every student-athlete, coach, official and
spectator is committed to the true spirit of competition through five tenets: respect,
integrity, responsibility, servant leadership and sportsmanship. The NAIA
Champions of Character program is designed to instill an understanding of character
values in sport, and provides student-athletes, coaches and parents the training to help
them know the right thing, do the right thing and value the right thing inside and outside
the sports setting.
