Cristina grew up in Tenerife and studied architecture in Madrid. Now she teaches at the School of Architecture at the Universidad Europea de Canarias (Laureate Universities) and works on business strategy as an independent consultant. Her personal project is 28 y Medio – a showroom and creative studio – where there is a constant exploration of new ways to collaborate.

Andrea studied architecture in Milan and Santiago de Chile but now resides in Matera, southern Italy. It is here that his personal dream, Casa Netural, was born – a collaborative space for rural and social innovation and sustainability. Andrea enjoys researching and writing articles for the international design and collaborative community while building new projects through different approaches.

ABOUT US*

Page 3: uuushh* portfolio

Separated by distance but joined by their vision for inspired collaborative spaces, architects Andrea Paoletti and Cristina Rebolo make a formidable team. As global design experts and associates of Impact HUB international co-working network, they are leaders in the field and their combined experience is extensive. Their shared passion is to create unique but sustainable environments for social innovation, collaboration and co-working around the world. They design for impact while considering the community of the project, honouring its needs and creative influences. Process is at the heart of their work and they specialise in co-creation to build the network of users even before the physical space evolves. More than just guiding others, they have lived the collaborative experience first-hand through the development of their own co-working spaces: Casa Netural and 28 y Medio.

SPACE

There is more to a collaborative work environment than a physical space. In order for the workplace to foster creativity and shared vision, it needs to be fluid and designed without the limits. Making the space flexible and dynamic can have an overwhelmingly positive influence on its users. This is achieved through a number of features – the structure of the space, furnishing of the environment and the adaptability of the workspace to nurture a range of activities.

PEOPLE*

Page 7: uuushh* portfolio

Understanding and involving the community that will use the space in the initial design phase is key to the uuushh* process. Andrea and Cristina firmly believe in co-creation – a way of working together with the members to identify their needs and to build a team mentality for the users from the outset. By involving the community in the process they identify themselves with the working space and feel more empowered by and involved in their environment.

Veintiocho y medio is a creative studio and collaborative community. It focuses on the intersection between social innovation and creative industries. The studio is located in the ground floor of a 100 year old building, with 4 metre high ceilings. Its original distribution has been kept, with the goal of keeping with the essence of the original building. Each of the ample rooms has different functions: Showroom, Studio, Focused Work Room, Workshop, Meeting Room, Co-Living Space, Kitchen and Patio.A collaborative space must value people as well as space. The space started its activity with the momentum of three entrepreneurs. Following a methodology of participatory leadership, community, and team maker has co-designed the study. The space has grown organically, in response to the growth of the community. Empowerment of collaborators to take ownership of the space and enrich the creative studio has been key to this expansion. Spaces flow and meet the needs of people at all times. Each collaborator contributes a percentage of their time per month to help with improvements and ideas, both for the space and team, by feeding a box of bright ideas. People come attracted by space, but stay for the people.

Casa Netural, in Matera, it’s the first collaborative, coworking space in Southern Italy’s Basilicata region. An experiment born through passion for social innovation, creativity and the need to develop a sense of community, Casa Netural has become the poster child for change in a rural setting. (Netural isn’t a typo, it stands for rural networking.) a Collaborative Space that Evolves with Its CommunityCasa Netural is a blank canvas on which locals and visitors are prompted to design a more sustainable future for the region. This can be achieved in a multitude of ways. By doing, by teaching, by learning or simply by discussing what the issues are and brainstorming possible solutions. The space is warm, inviting, steeped in heritage but fresh and modern in its flexible layout. There are couches, tables, a kitchen, Wi-Fi, reading material, whiteboards, pens and pencils to literally facilitate discussions, meetings and networking. But what Casa Netural offers as a physical space does not stop there. It is an evolutionary place where the community is constantly involved in the changing shape of the home. The people who use the space are encouraged to mold it to enhance their creativity and courage to be social innovators. The spirit of Casa Netural is to collaborate—to network with like-minded individuals, building a team of experts from near and far who can offer skills, experience and an alternative perspective.

TOOLS AND SERVICES*

Page 17: uuushh* portfolio

The physical design of a collaborative space is crucial – but the services offered by uuushh* are not limited to architectural bounds. Their expertise is to co-create new co-working and collaborative offices but also transform companies from the inside through design to be more creative, innovative and united. By introducing more informal and fluid spaces within an office, uuushh* aspire to achieve serendipity for the workers, their employers and the broader global community. Part of their portfolio is to facilitate this approach, to educate through design and to support companies working toward innovative outcomes. This work is not limited to face-to-face interactions and is now being achieved internationally through technological networking. Andrea and Cristina are consultants in person and online for new projects to offer specific guidance about: how to choose the right space for your business plan, help to find the space, co-creation sessions with the community and workers, elastic design processes, co-design with artisans, development of details and a broader understanding of the collaborative design concept.
