We are so proud of our students who have been working very hard in trying to make our world a beer place by giving back to the community. Our We Scare For Hunger Campaignbegan in October, where we began col- lecng non-perishable food items to donate to The Daily Bread Food Bank. In November, we started our Bag2School iniave, where we asked our students to bring gently used clothes in order to earn money towards our Me2We iniave. Our students are learning that there are many ways to give back and the importance of global cizenship. Our student leadership team planned and presented workshops for Buonville students in or- der to raise awareness against bullying. This was a wonderful opportunity for students to learn from one another. Please make sure your children dress appropriately for the cold weather. Warm boots, socks, pants, sweaters, coats, hats, miens and scarves tucked inside the coat are very important for children of all ages to wear. Children will be expected to be outside during recess and lunch so please make sure they are dressed for the weather. As well, since we have almost 500 students here at Buonville, and many children wear the same brands, colours and sizes of clothing, it would be very helpful if your childs name could be printed in ink in boots and on labels of clothing. If your child has lost any items, please check our Lost and Found box located near the front foyer of the school. It is a good idea to send extra clothing with younger students as acci- dents do happen or they get wet on the way to school with rain and snow. Please follow us on twier @BuonvillePS to see the learning that is taking place at Buon- ville. We oſten post pictures of things that are happening in the various classrooms. We are all looking forward to our Winter Concert this year! Please plan to be with us on Thurs- day, December 15th beginning at 6:30pm. A Message From Our Trustee

As we near the end of 2016, I hope everyone has had a great school year so far and found opportunities to get involved with the life of the school.

It is wonderful to have opportunities to see not only what our students are learning, but to see how they are learning – collaborating and problem solving, using technology in exciting new ways, and engaged in hands-on activities.

I want to take this opportunity to thank the dedicated staff members, students, families and community members across our Board. Thanks to all of the great people we have in our system, we continue to advance student achieve-ment and well-being.

Our Board continues to have a strong commitment to creating welcoming, inclusive learning environments that enable all of our students to thrive. Engaging families in your child’s education and the school community is in an important part of creating that environment.

There are resources for families available on our Board website at www.yrdsb.ca/parents, including information on Board programs and supports, and tips for parents to support your child’s learning at home and at school.

Best wishes to everyone for a safe and happy holiday season and a wonderful start to 2017. I hope you are able to en-joy time with family and friends.

Buttonville’s Coding Club

The Coding Club has been going well! It has been exposing the grades 3,4 and 5s to the world of coding and java script through various education websites such as the Hour of Code. For those of you who are not famil-iar with coding, it is the creation of computer programs, games, applications and interactive anima-tions. Thank you to Ms. Gregoriou for all her hard work!

As we approach the holiday season, the Me-to-We committee thought it would be nice to give back to our community by participating in the Toy Mountain campaign and the Mitten Tree.

The Toy Mountain Campaign helps the Salvation Army by providing new, unopened gifts to children in need. Last year over 30,000 families were able to benefit from the generosity of others. The mittens will be donated to homeless men and women in downtown Toronto.

Often it’s the tweens, teens and babies that are forgotten during the holiday season. Some suggested items are new makeup, curling iron, nail polish, hair accessories, books, gift cards, hats, scarves, sporting goods. Baby items could include: sleepers, rattles, mitts, socks, stocking stuffers.

We would like to ask every student/family to donate a new item or a new pair of mittens. A collection box will be set up in the office for the donated toys and all mittens will be hung on the holiday tree in-side the office.

We will begin collecting on Monday, December 5th through to Monday, December 19th. Items can also be dropped off the evening of the Winter Concert on Thursday, December 15th. Thank you for your sup-port! Thank you to Syd- ney for taking initiative on this!

Buttonville Remembers

On November 11th, Buttonville honoured our veterans and those who continue to serve and protect our country. We observed Remembrance day thoughtfully during our school wide assembly and reflected on the contributions made by others towards peace. Our students also engaged in rich discussions in class about the sacrifices made by Canadians and their commitment to freedom, democracy and human rights that allow for us to live our lives the way we do in Canada. Students also discussed and the importance of promoting and reflecting on peace.

ANTI BULLYING

Clothing Drive for Bag2School

In November our school participated in a clothing drive run through an organization called Bag2School. This company has worked with 25 000 schools and has succeeded in diverting tons of used clothing and textiles from going into land-fill sites. Our school also received money from the organization to put towards our Me2We initiative.Bag2School gave us a cheque for $244.00, for a total of 1220 kgs. Thank you to all of our students, staff, parents and guardians who made our campaign a huge success.

Student ECO Team

Early in November, Buttonville Public School received brand new sorting stations in each and every class-

room. Thanks to the City of Markham, the compost bins arrived and were installed at no cost to our school.

Over the past month, the student ECO team leaders have been hard at work monitoring the classrooms to

ensure that all waste is in its place.

Over the past two months, the student Anti-Bullying team has led inclusion workshops to more than 12 classes in our

school. The workshops were all student created and led with the support of a teacher. Special thanks to our Anti-

Bullying team for taking time out of their schedules to plan, create materials, and lead these valuable workshops!

Thank you to Ms. Angel for leading this team!

As winter approaches, we know that severe weather will be part of our daily lives for the next several months. While traffic safety is an important matter all year long, this is a particularly good time to review what we can do to keep stu-dents safe. Our children need to be aware and alert at all times, on any road, and even in the most routine circumstances is key to traffic safety. You can help reinforce these safety messages with your children at home. Below are some tips that might be helpful to review. • Stop, look, and listen for traffic. • Only cross at corners and crosswalks. • Make eye contact with drivers. • Walk on the right side of the crosswalk. • Wear appropriate footwear to reduce the chances of slipping. • Never run into the street. • Obey crossing signals. • Cross only if clear. • Walk on sidewalks. • Where there are no sidewalks, walk as far away from traffic as possible, facing traffic.

School Bus Cancellation Notice

To ensure the safety of students, school bus service may be cancelled due to inclement weath-

er, extreme temperatures and/or poor road conditions. In these cases, parents and students

should develop alternate care/transportation arrangements.

Since some busing schedules begin by 7:00 a.m., cancellation decisions must be made by 6:00

a.m. to allow time to communicate this message to bus drivers. Cancellation decisions will only

be made after thorough consultation with the Safety Officers of school bus companies servicing

York Region and are based on several factors including precipitation, air temperature, road conditions and weather

forecast.

Please note the following;

A decision to cancel school bus service will be region-wide meaning all school buses, vans and taxis will not oper-

ate.

When bus service is cancelled all school tests and/or examinations will be cancelled and rescheduled.

Student trips involving the use of school buses will also be cancelled.

School bus routes may be cancelled when severe weather may not be affecting all municipalities in York Region.

Both the YRDSB and YCDSB operate many regional educational programs. Students attending these programs are

transported over large attendance areas encompassing several municipal boundaries. This limits the ability to can-

cel bus service using a municipality or zone methodology.

Unless otherwise stated, schools will remain open and parents can make arrangements to transport their children

to and from school even if school bus service is cancelled. If buses are cancelled in the morning, they will not op-

erate in the afternoon. Therefore students transported to school by parents will require the same transportation

home.

Parents, students and school staff are asked to access the following radio and television stations after 6:00 a.m. to re-

ceive bus cancellation information:

A bus cancellation message will also be available at www.schoolbuscity.com and by calling

1-877-330-3001, or by following the YRDSB and YCDSB on twitter.

Please remember when school busses are cancelled, lunches run by school council and pizza will be cancelled and re-

scheduled for another day.
