CRICKETSCC Presentation Night

Even though it’s the off-season, plenty has been happening at the Sydney Cricket Club in recent weeks.

The SCC Presentation night was held at the Long Room of the SCG on Friday 28th May. The night was an unheralded success with a huge turnout of Balmainiacs from all generations present, as well as a positive representation from the women’s side. Tim Clarke took out the prestigious First Grade Player of the Year, and special mention was also made to Australian representatives Alyssa Healy and Elise Perry, who along with Angela Reakes represented NSW throughout the season. Alyssa and Angela are UTS Sports Scholars.

Full club training for the 2010/11 season will commence in August. Watch this space for the official launch of the UTS Academy of Cricket in coming months.

TENNISUTS Squad training for EUG’s

During May there were many UTS students taking advantage of the UTS Tennis Club member discounts.Free weekly training sessions have also been organised for the UTS squad going to Coffs Harbour for the upcoming Eastern University Games in July. They are making use of high performance coach Marc Ceyton’s advice, hopefully this will translate to good results for UTS at Uni Games.

The UTS Swimming Club at the South West Metro Carnival

SWIMMINGSouth West Metro Carnival

The UTS Swimming Club recently competed at the South West Metro Carnival at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre. The team performed well with all swimmers achieving personal bests.

Congratulations go to Tom Hunter who has qualified for the NSW State Open in the 50m and 100m Breastroke. Nicholas Bentley and Tom have also qualified for State Metros in July. Competing alongside Tom and Nic, Alex Patrulescu will be aiming to qualify for Open Nationals in the 200m and 400m Freestyle at both Metros and State.

All swimmers have shown a great sense of dedication over the past month, especially with swimmers having to balance study and end of semester exams with training and carnivals.

HOCKEY8 Teams in Finals Contention

UTS Hockey Club has hit the half-way mark in the season, with 8 of their 15 teams in finals contention. Attendance and effort at training has been pleasing, despite the late timeslots and the recent bad weather!

Well done to all players on their efforts so far as the improvement has been noticeable. On the social scene, the club had a great ANZAC Harbour Cruise with over 100 people on board to officially launch the season and introduce the captains of each team.

They have enjoyed many team dinners, and are looking forward to the Annual Trivia Night on Friday July 2 at the Glasshouse Bar, as the club members and their friends dig deep to raise funds for the Australian University Games team trip to Perth later in the year.

TOUCHAlumni Games Day

The Touch Club has had a big month. They hosted their social event of the year, the State of Origin Party on May 26th. Over 130 touch players and friends came to support the EUGs Fundraiser. The event even drew a few Origin stars after the game- with Queensland stars Israel Folau and Darius Boyd making an appearance.

Two UTS Social teams have produced stunning performances in the Grand Finals to win their divisions in the Norths Summer Competition. UTS won Men’s Intermediate in a thrilling final 11-10 and also won Intermediate Mixed 8-5.

On June 13th UTS Touch hosted its first Alumni Games Day at Artarmon Reserve. Current EUG’s teams were competing against some legends of the club and our representative feeder side, Varsity. The day was a great success, with all four EUG’s teams getting invaluable match practice and also advice from some veterans of UTS Touch and representative players. Talk around the BBQ after a tough few games was that this should certainly become an annual event!

They are continuing to train each Sunday leading up to EUG’s and are hoping for some strong results for all four sides in Coffs Harbour.

Australian University Games trials will be held shortly after EUGs.

TRIATHLONNor th Face 100k m Run

Balance and UTS Triathlon Club members - far from taking it easy over the winter off season - have been stepping up the pace by competing in or training for ultra-distance running races.

Jocie Evison (who raced on the Australian Age Group team for Olympic Distance and Long Distance races at the ITU Triathlon World Championships earlier this year) and Halcyon Bolt raced

the epic North Face 100km in the Blue Mountains on the 1st June.

There was a good turn out for the Great Nosh run last weekend and some members are now training for Oxfam Trailwalker (100km) in August.

On the social front the Club is getting ready for its annual awards night and AGM in July. A new training and development program is also being planned for next season.

Further details and a copy of the latest newsletter are on the new website at www.balancetriclub.org.au.

TAEKWONDOInter-University Sparr ing Training Day

On the 5th of June students from the UTS, UNSW and Sydney Uni Taekwondo clubs braved the cold and rain to attend the Inter-University Sparring Training day, the first ever time all the university taekwondo clubs across NSW have joined together as one.

With over 50 students coming together

for an intensive session on sparring tournament techniques and drills, the event gave UTS a chance to see how the other clubs train themselves. The day ended with some friendly sparring matches between the clubs and pizza. This offered the team an opportunity for students to size up any potential competition and warm up for the upcoming NSW State Championships in August.

For more information, as well as some photos from the day, visit www.utstkd.com.

OUTDOOR ADVENTURE CLUBWild Aid Emergenc y First Aid Course

Due to bad weather the range of activities offered for May/June 2010 was not quite as plentiful as in previous months.

In bushwalking, there was a coastal walk through the Royal National Park.

The usual Monday night indoor sessions at the Ledge have been going ahead every week, as well as lead climbing at Berowra and a beginner’s trip of camping and climbing at Mount York for those crazy enough to brave the cold.

Some external training was also undertaken, with a remote area first aid training program. Many of the OAC trip leaders skilled up by attending the two day program provided by Wild Aid, the course content being based around Basic Remote Area Emergency Response (BRER), teaching by means of classroom theory and scenario based learning.

CAPOEIRABatizado in October

There are two ways to describe the Capoeira Club activities this month - training and fundraising.

The club is pleased to be announce that their Master "Mestre Boneco" will be in Australia for their very first Batizado or grading in October. It gives the club a chance to change cords, learn from their master (one of the best and most respected capoeiristas in the world) and each other. Mestre Boneco will be coming to Australia from Brazil to supervise the event from the 11th - 14th October. In preparation, fundraising has kicked into a higher gear with movie nights, chocolate fundraisers, sponsored events and more.

Their training has been very hard work (especially due to the cold weather) in readiness for the Batizado, with a highlight being a trip to the Five Dock gymnasium for an acrobatics class. The Tuesday class location has changed after more than 5 years in Newtown, it was a sad but necessary move. A new hall has been located and details are at the club’s website.

The Capoeira Club is offering free trial classes to UTS students on the 26th June at 11:30am. To find out more or to take advantage of the Capoeira and cultural opportunity of having Mestre Boneco in Australia, visit their website

WATER POLOPhil Bower appointed Head Coach

Phil Bower has been appointed as Head Coach for the Balmain Water Polo Club Men’s 1st Grade side for the 2010 Summer Season and also as the Men’s National League Coach for 2011 effective from the 31 May 2010.

The club would like to congratulate Phil in rounding up such a stellar team to represent Balmain at the Men’s U23 Club tournament in Canberra on the weekend of the 11th June. The team made the Grand Final, just going down to the Brisbane Barracudas in an extremely close match that went down to extra time and a sudden death penalty shoot out.
