Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) Research Fund Presentation (5 July 2012)

The Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) Research Fund Presentation ceremony was held on 5 July 2012 at the Ministry of Higher

Education, Putrajaya.

The event was officiated by the Minister of Higher Education, YB Dato‟ Seri Mohamed Khalid Nordin to award the four main research schemes to

successful public and private higher learning institutions in Malaysia. The four research schemes are the Fundamental Research Grant Scheme

(FRGS), Exploratory Research Grant Scheme (ERGS), Long Term Research Grant Scheme (LRGS) and Prototype Research Grant Scheme

(PRGS).

UTP Vice Chancellor, Datuk Dr Zainal Abidin Hj Kasim represented UTP and 25 other private higher learning institutions in Malaysia to receive the

FRGS from YB Dato‟ Seri Mohamed Khalid Nordin.

For 2012, research grants of about RM163 million were approved to be channeled to public and private institutions. Of the RM163 million, RM150

million were awarded to the public institutions of higher learning, while the remainder were awarded to private institutions of higher learning.

UTP signs MOU with 3 Korean Institutions (11 – 13 July 2012)

1. Sunchon National University, Korea

Sunchon National University is a public higher educational institution established by the Korean government in 1935. In 2002, it was selected as a

top-tier university in education and research attainments in assessment of a national university‟s own development plans, winning recognition as

the education institute on the growth track.

The signing ceremonies, which were held in Korea, marked another significant milestone in UTP‟s quest to achieve its academic and

R&D excellence. Details of the Korean institutions are:-

2. Mokpo National Maritime University, Korea

Founded in 1950, Mokpo National Maritime University is a maritime specialized university that focuses on cultivating intellectuals who will have the

leadership for new maritime culture and knowledge of maritime science. It is equipped with modern laboratory equipment and two new large-scale

practice ships that are used in classes.

3. Korea Maritime Institute

Korea Maritime Institute was established in 1984. It specialises on cultivating intellectuals who will have not only the leadership for new maritime

culture, but also the knowledge of maritime science. It functions as a think tank for developing national policies on marine affairs and fisheries.

UTP strengthens its collaboration with Mitsubishi Corporation (3 September 2012)

Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) Vice Chancellor, YBhg. Datuk Dr. Zainal Abidin Hj Kasim and Mitsubishi Corporation Chief

Executive for Malaysia, Mr. Koichi Wada signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on 3 September 2012 at Malaysian Petroleum

Club, Kuala Lumpur City Centre, to augment its existing research and education partnership. This is a renewal of the earlier MOU for another

3 years commencing 1 July 2012.

Both parties had earlier signed an MOU on 29 April 2009 to establish the Mitsubishi Corporation Chair in Green Technology at UTP, to be

funded by Mitsubishi Corporation through its Trust Fund called Mitsubishi Corporation Education Trust Fund (MCETF).

The Mitsubishi Corporation Chair in Green Technology was established to promote an integrated system of research, training, information

and documentation in the field of Green Technology and serve as a means of facilitating collaboration between UTP and high-

level, internationally recognized researchers and academics from other universities and institutions.

10th Academic Advisory Council (AAC) Meeting (3 July 2012)

The 10th Academic Advisory Council (AAC) meeting of Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) was held on 3 July 2012 at Level 86, Tower

1, PETRONAS Twin Towers. The Council acts as a forum to exchange ideas between academicians and industry leaders, as well as providing

guidance and strategic direction for the university‟s development.

The Council amongst others, discussed matters on R&D efforts, international linkages, and „Global University‟, which was also the theme for this

year‟s meeting. UTP aspires to be internationally recognised as partner of choice for oil and gas by the year 2015, internationally recognised as a

partner of choice for industries and a respected member of the scientific communities by the year 2020.

Universal Testing Machine Laboratory, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS Receives

Accreditation From Standards Malaysia (6 July 2012)

Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) becomes the first private university in Malaysia awarded by the Department of Standards Malaysia

(STANDARDS MALAYSIA) when its Universal Testing Machine (UTM) Laboratory was accredited under Laboratory Accreditation Scheme of

Malaysia (SAMM) based on MS ISO/IEC 17025:2005 – „General Requirements for the Competence of Testing and Calibration Laboratories‟.

Puan Fadilah Baharin, the Director General of STANDARDS MALAYSIA presented the accreditation certificate of MS ISO/IEC 17025:2005 to

UTP‟s Vice Chancellor, YBhg. Datuk Dr. Zainal Abidin Hj. Kasim, at a special presentation ceremony on 6 July, 2012.

The UTM Laboratory is managed by Laboratory Facilities & Services Unit (LFSU) UTP, which is one of the units under Academic Central

Services Department. It has successfully undergone the accreditation process and demonstrated technical competence for mechanical testing

and the operation of a laboratory management system since 1 February 2012.

The 12th Technology, Education and Career 2012 (TEC XII) (10 – 11 July 2012)

The 12th edition of the Technology, Education and Career successfully attracted 53 companies to participate in its exhibition held at the

Foyer, Chancellor Complex, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) from 10 – 11 July 2012. This annual event was jointly organised by UTP‟s

Career Advisory Services Unit and Student Representative Council, in collaboration with the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE), Ministry of

Science and Technology (MOSTI) and Ministry of Human Resources (MOHR). This year, TEC XII also received support from the Ministry of

Defence (MINDEF).

The event was officiated by YBhg. Leftenan Jeneral Dato‟ Wira Allatif Mohd Noor, Vice Chancellor of National Defence University of

Malaysia, representing Y.B. Dato‟ Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Minister of Defence Malaysia.

In conjunction with TEC XII, several pre-events such as career talks, interviews, Career Seed, Intern Share Forum, SHELL Management Skill Game

and a technology conference were held since March. These programmes were designed to increase the interaction between future graduates and

representatives from global industry giants and local companies, as well as government agencies from various sectors. This would then help future

graduates to find suitable employers and industries that are relevant to their qualifications and interests.

UTP Rector’s Cup 2012 (18 July 2012)

The finale and prize giving ceremony of the UTP 3rd Rector‟s Cup Intra-varsity debate and public speaking championship were held recently at

Undercroft, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS and officiated by UTP Vice Chancellor, YBhg. Datuk Dr Zainal Abidin Hj Kasim.

Rector‟s Cup is an annual competition held at UTP to scout for promising new debaters to represent UTP‟s Debate Club in the local, regional and

international debating arena. This year, it was part of the UTP Language Week Carnival held in conjunction with the UTP 15 Years

Celebration. The event was jointly organised by the UTP Debate Club and UTP Village 1 Committee.

The competition received good response with almost 80 participants from foundation and undergraduate levels, took part in the various categories.

UTP Student Section won Institute of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) awards for:

- Most Outstanding IEM Young Engineers Section for Student Section 2011/2012

- Most Outstanding Student Member for IEM Young Engineers Section 2011/2012 for its section president

The awards were presented during the 42nd Annual General Meeting of Young Engineers Section, IEM on

30 June 2012 at Swiss Garden Hotel, Kuala Lumpur.

Science and Engineering Design Exhibition (SEDEX30) (8 – 9 August 2012)

The 30th Science and Engineering Design Exhibition (SEDEX30) was successfully held from 8 – 9 August 2012 at Chancellor Hall Plaza, Universiti

Teknologi PETRONAS, with the support from Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI). YBhg. Datuk Dr. Zainal Abidin Hj Kasim,

UTP Vice Chancellor officiated this event that served as a platform for UTP students, staff and surrounding communities to present their innovation

and creative ideas.

This biannual event was organised with the following objectives:

• To expose students‟ design projects to the community of the university and personnel from PETRONAS OPUs in promoting UTP as a centre of

creativity and innovation.

• To encourage interactions between students, lecturers, exhibitors and visitors on exchanging R&D ideas, as well as questioning other opinions

in creating well-rounded engineers.

• To aspire students‟ involvement in the creative and innovative activities as part of extending the innovative culture towards the surrounding

community, in line with the Government‟s innovation programmes.

The two-day event, which was held since 1997, managed to attract 199 teams with participation from various departments in UTP, along with local

primary and secondary schools. With 35 Gold, 52 Silver and 71 bronze to be won, it comprised of several award categories such as Engineering

Team Project, Final Year Projects, Postgraduate Project, Open Innovation Category, Young Inventors Category and Clubs and Societies.

Iftar with His Royal Highness Raja DiHilir Perak, Raja Jaafar Raja Muda Musa

(14 August 2012)

On 14 August 2012 / 25 Ramadhan 1433, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) together with Majlis Daerah Perak Tengah (Perak Tengah

District Council) organised the Iftar Ramadhan at An-Nur Mosque, UTP with His Royal Highness (HRH) Raja DiHilir Perak, Raja Jaafar Raja

Muda Musa as the royal guest of honour.

Other guests who attended the gathering were YB Dato' Mohammad Zahir bin Dato‟ Abdul Khalid, Perak Exco of Education, Higher Education,

ICT, Human Resources, Science and Technology Committee Chairman, representing YAB Dato‟ Seri DiRaja Dr. Zambry bin Abd Kadir, Perak

Menteri Besar, and UTP Vice-Chancellor Datuk Dr Zainal Abidin Hj Kasim and spouse, Datin Rosemi Hamdan along with 1,000 UTP students

and staff.

This event aimed to enhance the relationship between His Royal Highness, UTP community and government personnel.

Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) - Universiti of Tokyo (UT) Summer Programme 2012

(26 August - 8 September 2012)

Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) is currently hosting 14 students from The University of Tokyo (UT), Japan under the UTP-UT Summer

Programme 2012. These students will be in UTP for two weeks starting from 26th August until 8 September 2012. During their stay in UTP, they will

enroll in short courses and involve in various programmes such as educational trips, cultural and recreational activities within and outside the

university compound.

UT was established in 1877 as the first national university in Japan. As a leading research university and one of the top ranking universities in

Japan, it offers courses in essentially all academic disciplines at both undergraduate and graduate levels and conducts research across the full

spectrum of academic activity. Located in Tokyo, Japan, the university aims to provide its students with a rich and varied academic environment that

ensures opportunities for both intellectual development and the acquisition of professional knowledge and skills.

PETRONAS Chairman’s First Visit to UTP (19 September 2012)

YBhg Tan Sri Sidek Hassan, Chairman of PETRONAS, visited UTP on 19 September 2012, accompanied by Pn. Juniwati Rahmat

Hussin, Chairman of ITPSB Board of Directors and Pn. Raiha Azni Abdul Rahman, Vice President of Human Resource Management Division of

PETRONAS.

YBhg Tan Sri Sidek was briefed on UTP‟s progress by Datuk Dr. Zainal and was later taken for a tour of the University facilities which include the

Information Resource Centre, the Chancellor Hall and selected laboratories namely Unit Operations Lab of Chemical Engineering, Control Lab of

Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Manufacturing and Prototyping Lab of Mechanical Engineering, Centre for Enhanced Oil Recovery and

Centralised Analytical Lab.

The Chairman was impressed with UTP‟s achievements and felt that UTP has established its reputation as a university of choice. Also as President

of UIAM, he is much aware of the challenges facing institutions of higher learning in Malaysia and the university hopes that his wide experience and

wisdom will assist UTP to achieve Research University status and international recognition.

UPAG Emerge Overall Champion in Perak Festival Tari 2012 (FESTARI) (22 September 2012)

UTP Performing Arts Group (UPAG) consists of 16 students danced their way to victory when they emerged the overall Champion and won the Best

Costume Award at the recent Perak Festival Tari 2012 (FESTARI) held at Perak Arts Council Auditorium Complex on 22 September 2012.

The event was officiated by YB Dato' Zainol Fadzi Haji bin Paharudin, Perak Exco of Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Committee, in the presence of

Encik Abdul Mutalib Abdul Rahman, Director of Jabatan Kebudayaan dan Kesenian Negara, Negeri Perak (JKKN).

Organised by JKKN and Persatuan Permainan Tradisional Serantau (PEWARIS), the festival saw the participation of 24 teams of professional and

amateur dancers in Perak. Witnessed by about 200 audiences, UPAG mesmerized the judges with their “Tanjung Bidara” dance and their colourful

costumes. UPAG walked away with cash prizes and appreciation certificates presented by YB. Dato‟ Zainal Fadzi.

The achievements and active involvement of UTP students in cultural and arts activities have proven that the students are well-rounded, where they

have the capabilities to acquire new skills and talents besides achieving their academic excellence. UTP students are also well known for their

achievements in various competitions such as debate, entrepreneurship games, science invention and sports.

UTP Oil & Gas Industry Seminar 2012 (26 September 2012)

PETRONAS and Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) in collaboration with Baker Hughes, Halliburton, Schlumberger and Technip organised the

inaugural UTP Oil & Gas Industry Seminar 2012 (OGIS 2012) at UTP, Bandar Seri Iskandar. It was officiated by YBhg. Datuk Dr. Zainal Abidin Hj

Kasim, UTP Vice Chancellor.

This event was a result of the various partnerships formed by PETRONAS with key oil and gas industries players, in line with its education institutions‟

aspiration to become “a regional education and learning hub for the oil and gas industry”. It aims to create a platform for students and academics to

connect with experts and professionals from the industry via exchanging of ideas and discussions on current oil and gas issues.

“Gearing up for the future challenges of the oil and gas industry” was chosen as this year‟s theme to equip students with the necessary skills towards

employment. Through this engagement, students were given a real-world prospect of what is expected of them when they join the workforce later.

YBhg. Datuk Dr. Zainal in his opening remarks said that the oil and gas industry is rapidly evolving and growing with the breakthrough technologies and

innovations that are discovered through rigorous R&D efforts. Thus, it is important for future leaders in the industry to prepare themselves and get

acquainted with new set of skills and competencies required by the industries.

More than 400 students, academics and professionals benefitted from the seminar that featured renowned speakers from Baker Hughes, Halliburton,

Schlumberger, Technip and PETRONAS, who shared their insights and expertise in the oil and gas field.
