ABSTRACT

Kampung Bangi was established in the year 1949. It is located in the district of Bangi in

the state of Selangor. Bandar Bangi a nearby town is only eight-minute drive away.

Bangi is multi-ethnic society comprises Malays, Chinese and Indians. The Chinese, who

form the majority of Bangi’s population, are mainly from the Hokkien dialect group.

Many villagers are engaged in the oil palm estates, while others operate small businesses

or are involved in poultry or livestock rearing. The limited employment opportunities in

Kg Bangi have led to the outmigration of many young adults and this in turn leads to a

declining population in this village.

POPULATION, HOUSING AND TRANSPORTATION

We obtained useful information about the village from Mr Law Kok Tian, Chairman of

SJK(C) Yoke Min Bangi’s school committee. He informed us that Kg Bangi’s population

in 2014 is approximately 1,000. There are Malay, Chinese and Indian villagers but the

Chinese make up 90% of the population.

In the year 1978, villagers came together to buy land adjacent to the village at a cost of

RM400, 000.00. The land was divided into 127 lots of which 8 lots were allocated for the

construction of the primary school, basketball court and temple.

Many villagers earn a living from the oil palm estates and smallholdings in this area. In

addition, some villagers operate small business in the village. There are limited career

opportunities in this village and, as a result, many young villagers have out-migrated to

the cities.

INFRASTRUCTURE

There is a railway station near this village. Although this does not bring many outsiders

to the village, this station makes it convenient for villagers to neighbouring towns and

other parts of West Malaysia.

Community Hall

There is no police station or fire station in Kg Bangi. According to Mr. Law, the police

station and fire station are located near to the village- only 10 minutes away. However,

the villagers have also formed their own voluntary group to deal with safety and security

of the village.

There is no post office in the village as well. However, there is a weekly mobile post

office service for villagers. There is no hospital in the village but there is a local clinic.

The nearest hospital is Serdang Hospital.

Although there is no secondary school in this village, there is a university, Universiti

Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) located nearby. In fact, many students and staff from UKM

stay at Kg Bangi.

Villagers have access to electricity and piped water supply. Besides, there is a weekly

garbage collection service.

Recent developments in Selangor state have benefitted the villagers. They now have

access to a big shopping mall, the IOI Mall, which is a 25 minute drive away.

EDUCATION

SJKC Yoke Min Bangi is the only primary school in this village. When the school started

operation in 1933, it had around 10 to 30 students. However, within 2 years, its enrolment

increased to 70 students. This school was closed during the Japanese Occupation of

Malaya but was reopened soon after the war ended. Currently, SJK(C) Yoke Min Bangi

has approximately 200 students and 20 teachers.

This school has a library, a music room, a meeting room, a basketball court, a canteen, a

school hall and other facilities. Donors have contributed generously to this school and

such funds are out to good use, e.g. the construction of the school hall. Besides, private

companies have sponsored extra classes for slow learners on weekends. Extra classes on

information technology are also held.

SOCIAL, CULTURAL AND RELIGIOUS PRACTICES

Bangi has a populations consisting of 90% Chinese and only 10% Malays and Indians.

Because of the composition of its population, the main languages spoken are Mandarin

and Hokkien, Religions practiced in this village are Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism

and Islam. Places of worship include church, Chinese/Buddhist temples and Hindu

temples. Although there aren’t any mosques in Kg Bangi, Muslim villagers may travel to

mosque in nearby villages and towns. These places of worship are often crowded during

religious festivals.

Festivals celebrated by the Chinese villagers include Chinese New Year, the Dragon Boot

Festival and the Moon Cake Festival. The latter is celebrated on a grand scale and tickets

are sold for performances held at the school hall.

Local Muslims and Hindus celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Thaipusm respectively.

Generally, villagers from all ethnic groups join in the celebration of each others’ festivals.

Basically, Kg Bangi residents live in a harmonious society.

PROBLEM AND NEEDS OF PEOPLE

Kg Bangi’s declining population is a major concern. Many young adults have out-

migrated to the cities for better career opportunities, unless new investment and related

new employment opportunities are introduced to this village, the problem of population

decline introduced to this village, the problem of population decline will continue.

Another issue is the shortage of land for future expansion. Unless existing village houses

and buildings are demolished, there is no more land within this village for new

developments such as a secondary school or new businesses.

At this point, there seems to be few tourist attractions in Kg Bangi. Perhaps some local

temples could be publicized or new attractions such as theme park could be built.

RECOMMENDATIONS

During the interview Mr Law mentioned that there are plans to build a water theme park

in this area. If this plan materializes, the park could attract tourists to Kg Bangi as well as

provide new employment opportunities. Perhaps local festivals and other cultural events

could also be celebrated on a larger scale and publicized to attract more visitors.
