Jozwiak. May 3rd 7:00p

The UWS 2016 Spring Open Exhibition opens on May 3rd. 83 paintings submitted

by 53 artists will be on display at the Eccles Community Art Center (ECAC), 2580

Jefferson Ave., Ogden, UT. The exhibit runs through Friday, May 27th. UWS will

join ECAC in celebrating Ogden’s First Friday Art Stroll on May 6th. Why not plan

an Ogden visit for dinner followed by a walk through the local galleries? Make sure

that you stop by ECAC between 5:00pm and 8:00pm to participate in the reception

and to find out which artists Bev Jozwiak, our juror of international fame, has

picked to win awards. Also of note, the Utah Division of Arts and Museums will be

selecting 24 paintings from the exhibition to be included in their annual Traveling

Exhibition Program. Please come and join the fun!

Bev Jozwiak is a

signature member of

every major

watercolor society,

most notably The

American Watercolor

Society, The National

Watercolor Society,

Watercolor West and

NWWS. She has had

Lace and Grace by Bev Jozwiak

a plethora of magazine articles in

everything from The Artist’s

Magazine, Watercolor, and American

Art Collector, to International Artist

Magazine, and more.

Bev is now the author of a 164-page

technique/coffee table book called

“Painting Life with Life.” Life as in

people and animals and Life as in

energy and excitement.

UWS is thrilled to have Bev Jozwiak

visit us in May. In addition to being

the juror for our 2016 Spring Open

Exhibition, Bev will teach our

workshop and demonstrate at our May

Member meeting. Though the

workshop is full, we hope you will join

us for the May 3rd Member Meeting

demonstration!

2015 UWS Spring Open

Exhibition Best of Show:

Old Glory by Sherry Meidell

It’s time for the 3rd Annual Arts in the

Park, Light on the Reef watercolor

plein air event in Capitol Reef!

Dates: Wed-Sat June 1-4, 2016.

This year, the plein air competition

will be divided into two parts: Small

Works which must be started and

completed on location, and Large

Works (not larger that a 1/2 sheet

due to space constraints). The large

works can be touched up off location

if needed to present a better finished

piece. Entrada Institute hosts the

event (adjacent to Robbers Roost).

This year The Saddlery will provide

the artists' dinner.

We are building on the success of

the past two years, looking to make

this bigger and better than last year.

This year's jurors include Shawn

Rossiter of 15 Bytes, Carl Purcell,

Pat Priebe Swanson, and Susan

Snow. If you have ideas for the

future of this event, we want to hear

from you. Contact Maura Naughton

([email protected]) with

questions or if you want to be placed

on a waiting list for this year’s event.

UWS Paint Outs

The paint out crew met in April at the

Southeast corner of the valley. Hidden

Valley Park was beautiful and windy.

We had six painters and two more to

join us for lunch. Next month, we will

be downtown. Saturday, May 14th will

find us at the Salt Lake Art Center, on

the quad, to paint the city and the

iconic skyline. 10:00am as always. For

questions or information on upcoming

venues, contact Maggie

([email protected]) or

Blaine ([email protected]).

Also, please feel free to share any

location suggestions!

Mark your calendars! Our Small

Works Exhibition is just around the

corner. This exhibition may be small,

but it’s big in spirit! Alpine Art and

Frame (430 E South Temple, SLC)

will be hosting the opening reception

on Friday, July 15th and they have

agreed to hang 80 pieces. Every

attempt will be made to select at least

one entry from each submitting

artist. This exhibition allows artists to

use a variety of surfaces and mixed-

media. So, have fun and get painting!

We are excited to have Diana

Gardiner, Adjunct Faculty for

Watercolor at the University of Utah,

judge the exhibition. Please note that

artwork (including the outer frame)

may not exceed 144 square

inches. For complete details, review

the prospectus. Click here to register.

April Member meeting

recap

Many thanks to UWS Jennifer Love

for clueing us in about social media in

our April general meeting. For those

of us who market our art, the

information was invaluable. But even

for those of us who don’t sell our work,

we should be educated in this area

because social media helps us keep

connected with the people in our lives.

There are various types of social

media: Blogging, Facebook, LinkedIn,

Instagram, YouTube, Pinterest and

others. Each one has a different focus

and advantages, depending upon what

we want to achieve. In our meeting

we learned about branding, time

sucking, content, stats, safety,

followers, consistency and

searchability. Certainly everyone in

attendance learned something.

For more in-depth information and as

a review, Jennifer has made her entire

presentation available. Click here.

The watercolor society benefits greatly

by having someone as talented and

ambitious as

Jennifer

contributing to our

membership and

especially all the

work she does on

our Board.

UWS Members Join Record

Numbers of Plein Air Artists For

PACE16 in April!

UWS members Becky Hartvigsen,

Maura Naughton and Colleen

Reynolds joined instructors Kristi

Grussendorf and Brienne Brown

at this year’s Plein Air Convention

and Expo (PACE) in Tucson,

Arizona. Between one and four

demonstrations or presentations

were conducted simultaneously for

four days (beginning with “Marketing

Boot Camp” at 6:30 AM). When the

artists were not in demonstrations,

they were on site painting at

locations including the Hilton Tucson

El Conquistador hotel grounds,

Catalina State Park, Old Tucson

Movie Studios, and Picacho State

Park. UWS member Brienne Brown

and UWS Past President Kristi

Grussendorf each completed a two-

hour painting demonstration on

Sunday. Both presenters were very

well received!

He often uses gouache to paint a solid

area to “quiet” it in contrast to the

action portions. And to create high

value contrast he uses jet black paint

and leaves a lot of white paper.

Part of Don’s charm is that, although

he has a very long list of very, very

impressive achievements, he is a

humble cowboy and proclaims that he

still learns from each painting. What a

benefit it is for our state that he and his

lovely wife Cha Cha have adopted

Utah as their home!

Roland Lee Mini

Workshop recap

Roland Lee did not disappoint, with

two days of good advice, fun practice

exercises and fabulous demos

throughout the entire workshop. Every

student came away with valuable

knowledge of using thumbnails, doing

value sketches, some quick study

paintings of skies, and a miniature

painting. It was a fun-filled two days

with a room full of fellow artists, who

shared their efforts freely. Thanks to

all for making this a memorable

experience!

Join Steve Sheffield and Marian

Dunn for Art in the Afternoon on May

1st at the Cottonwood Country Club.

March Member meeting

recap

Yee haw! In our March general

meeting, Don Weller transported our

members to the Wild West with his

slide show presentation. His reputation

preceded him, as we enjoyed an

audience with more men in attendance

than usual. However, the women

loved him too!

We learned how Don’s background

has influenced his style. His life

experiences, from his love of horses,

to a long successful career in

illustration and design have all

influenced his art.

His style is realistic, although Don is

not trying to duplicate nature, but to

make a painting. This means that he

does realistic drawings but

exaggerates action. He also employs a

couple of techniques somewhat

unique to his style to push contrasts:

When I first started watercolor painting, I attended many plein air events. Thanks to

a group of avid outdoor painters up here in Cache Valley, we have them scheduled

twice a week! I figured that if I made a lot of attempts, sometime I would paint

something worthwhile. At these paint outs I would begin with a sketch. I loved the

drawing part. It was relaxing. Then I would get out the watercolor paper and draw

the outlines with pencil. Then came the stressful part. I would feel I just had to paint

a beautiful painting, and I was so afraid of wasting the paper.

Eventually I started going to the Wednesday night group lessons at Lester’s studio.

I heard him say, “It’s just a piece of paper.” I started repeating that mantra to myself

at the paint outs. Plein air became more enjoyable when my goal shifted from

creating a beautiful painting to learning, trying new things, enjoying the excellent

company and enjoying the outdoors. And you know what? My paintings improved

along with my attitude.

There is something in giving yourself permission to try and fail that frees us to learn.

Many of you have already learned this lesson. I think it is something almost

everyone has to learn, and possibly even relearn. It is easier, too, for me at least, to

learn things like this in the company of others. Thank you Lester, and thank you

fellow plein air painters.

CVC Member Meetings are held the

second Tuesday of each month at the

Logan Library.

We had a great demonstration by Lester Lee at our April

UWS-Cache Valley Chapter (CVC) meeting. In addition to

demonstrating watercolor techniques, he also

demonstrated a frame of mind that many of us would do

well to follow. Lester kept saying things like, “Since I am

just going to throw this in the garbage can, I can do

anything I want to it.” At first I was a little aghast. I would

gladly take any painting of Lester’s, and said so, along

with others. But I started to see the wisdom in this frame

of mind. Laura Hawley
