When you go to register your vehicle, you will be required to obtain insurance before you are allowed to continue with the process at the Utah Division of Motor Vehicles.

You are required to obtain No-Fault insurance for your automobile before you can register and legally drive your car. Your insurance coverage must include liability coverage, which is designed to help you pay for any and all damages or injuries you caused to someone due to a car accident. The process to register a vehicle when bought from a private party is similar to renewing a new vehicle. If purchasing from a dealership, the dealer may be able to register the vehicle for you. There are three different situations for military members in or from Utah.

Registration for Military Members

Service members who are Utah residents will need to follow the same procedures as a civilian Utah residents when registering their vehicles.

Non-resident service members stationed in Utah are not required to register their vehicles in the state.

• If a non-resident service member purchases a car in Utah, he or she is responsible for paying the Utah sales tax on that car, regardless of where it is registered.

Residents who are stationed out of Utah can keep the license plates they currently have while they are away. Besides this benefit, they will be exempt from certain registration requirements such as:

• Safety Inspection

• Just complete the first section from the Exemption of Utah Safety and Emission Requirements for Vehicles Not in Utah (TC-810) form and then send the form to the appropriate address outlined in the form.

• Emissions Inspection

• In case your county is listed as one of the areas that require the emissions inspection, simply complete the second section from form TC-810 and mail your form to one of the addresses listed on the application, along with the proof of passing the vehicle emissions inspection.

• Property tax

• You just need to provide the requested documentation at the Utah DMV office.

Renewing Your

Vehicle Registration

Allowing your vehicle registration to expire is not a well-advised thing to do, as it will mean you are no longer able to legally drive your vehicle. You must make sure to renew your vehicle’s registration before its expiration. You will receive a renewal notice a few weeks before your registration’s expiration date. The following three options are available to renew your vehicle registration:

You can print a temporary registration until your official registration arrives by mail in approximately 10 days.

A DMV office will be able to issue you an official registration and decal at the time of your visit. You can

also renew your registration at an On The Spot (OTC) station where you can also get emissions and safety inspections, if necessary.

Changing Your Name If you have officially changed your name, you will be re-quired to update all of your identification documents and cards, including your vehicle registration. Doing this is very simple, but you need to contact the Social Security Admin-istration (SSA) first so the Utah Division of Motor Vehicles can verify the name change.

Visit your local SSA office and bring proof of your identity, name change and U.S citizenship. You can view a com-plete list of acceptable documents here. Make sure you are carrying only original documents since the SSA will not receive any copies of your documentation. Download and fill out an Application for a Social Security Card and take it with you when you go request your name change.

The application should be submitted by mail or in person at an SSA office. Allow 10 days for your new Social Securi-ty card to arrive by mail.

Changing Your AddressIf you have recently moved, it is essential that you update the address on your car registration. There is no charge for changing your address. However, if you wish to receive an updated document, you must follow the same steps involved with requesting a duplicate car registration.

When you register your vehicle, the Utah DMV assigns a license plate number to you. Whenever you renew your registration, your license plates are also renewed. The DMV will give you a decal that you must attach to the license plate.

You can request a custom license plate that displays a combination of letters and numbers of your choosing, instead of having the DMV assign you a license plate number.
