Friends family & loved ones,

By now many of you may be feeling anxious anticipating the return of your Marine. For some of you at home, it’s the first time you’ve had to experi-ence this feeling and for others it is just a sequel to previous deployments. Whatever the case may be, please remember you have a huge support net-work within the Marine Corps Community. It stretches from our battalion, company and

Dear Friends and Family of Bravo Company,

Once again we come to the point in our deployment where we find ourselves on the downhill slope towards our return back home. As such, I realize that both the families, as well as the Marines, are eager to plan their long awaited time together. We will be phased back by platoon over a projected 3 month pe-riod. Please remember to be patient with the timelines and

dates. As we get closer to our arrival, the FRO will distribute the information out to the masses. Please contact Shantel if you need to be added to the distribution.

You can stand assured that we are just as busy today as the day that we all arrived. If we could clone each one of your loved ones, we would be able to ac-complish many more tasks, but still fall short of the work to be done.

Unfortunately, as you all know, we lost another one of our brothers from our company. Corporal Daane DeBoer, with 2nd Platoon, lost his life on 25 June. Please continue to sup-port the families of both LCpl Yazzie and Cpl DeBoer as they continue the grieving process. As always, we appreciate all that you do to support us from the home front. Without your ef-forts and assistance, your Ma-rines would not be able to con-duct themselves in the manner to which they have been during their deployment. Happy Birthday to the following Marines for the month of July!

SSgt Michael Foreman

Families and loved ones of the Marines of Bravo Company 1st Platoon, the light at the end of the tunnel that we spoke about a few months ago, is just out of reach of our eager grasp. Although the mail has come to a slow trickle, the operation tempo has not. We have reached the beginning of summer here with temperatures reaching in excess of 130 degrees, but your Marines continue to drive on with discipline and dedication.

For those of you that follow the events and news of 1st platoon, we have sent another wounded warrior back home. LCpl Brandon Imada

was wounded in action on 5 June, 2010 when the MAT-V he was in was struck with an improvised explosive device. He was awarded his Purple Heart by the assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps, General Amos.

LCpl Imada lost a few teeth, and sustained a cut on his chin, but from what he is telling us, he will make a full recovery. Our thoughts are with him daily. We’ll see you soon buddy.

Now for the part that most of you have been waiting for. Your Ma-rines return! Although I cannot give out specific dates, locations, or arrival times just yet, I do ask for help from the families. In order to help make the transition home smooth, I encourage families and friends to start making plans now. Information can and often does quickly change for the return home. Making flexible plans will help adapt to these changes. I have included some links of ho-

tels, car rental businesses, restau-rants, and other activities if you so choose to partake in Southern California’s life while visiting. If any of you have any questions, see something you like, or something you don’t see that you like, feel free to contact me at [email protected].

Your Marines continue to work hard, and complete the tasks at hand. Please be patient with them on their return, give them the space they need, but also the love that can only be shown by you, the family members. And in closing as always, We thank you for your continued support that you show your Marine.

Ladies and Gentleman,

We had some of the Marines in the platoon write the narrative this month. We thought you may want to hear from them vs. us for a change of pace.

Dear Family and Friends of 2nd Platoon:

The last month has been difficult for everyone in the platoon. One of

our brothers was taken from us, and is greatly missed. “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” We had a memorial service for him on July 10th but we will never forget Corporal Deboer and he will always be with us.

Recently, the Marines received air conditioning for their tent, and have been very excited about not sweating 24/7. This has improved living conditions immensely over the mud huts that resemble clay ovens. Finally, we got a chance to use the morale welfare and recrea-tion facility, as family and friends may be able to tell by the fact that Marines were able to get their Facebook fix. We greatly appre-ciate the packages everyone has been sending, it improves morale every time we receive them, but as the speed of mail here is terri-ble it would be best not to send any more after July. As I am

writing this, a mouse was eating SSgt Croake’s pistachios and peed on his goldfish, we were unable to kill it and it escaped, it will be back tomorrow!

Currently most of us are preparing to build a new base and improve the security in our area of opera-tions. We are well over halfway and our current projects will keep us busy until we leave. On a side note, Cpl Nix said his truck, 7-Tango, “urinates excellence in the morning” and refuses to go any-where without it and Cpl Warren literally drove his truck until the wheels fell off.

Some of the stranger things we have done are taking showers in a well; Cpl Lane rode a donkey and is contemplating buying one when we get back to California. Cpl Kearns is deathly afraid of spiders and one night I saw him jump 3 feet and come down with an axe stomp to kill a camel spider. We have found a new species of in-sect that we have named bumble-birds (bumblebees the size of sparrows). Little did we know that there are some good fruits like watermelon, figs, grapes, mangoes, and pomegranate here in the desert wasteland of Af-ghanistan, which we are able to enjoy occasionally on patrols.

As the deployment rolls on most of us feel the days are long but the weeks are fast and we ask that you not only keep us in your prayers, but also the Marines who already returned to the States for family and medical reasons.

Seek Battle,

Sgt Lind Cpl Lane Cpl Nix

Corporal Daane A. Deboer Purple Heart

KIA Afghanistan 2010

Bravo 2nd Platoon’s fallen warrior - Corporal Deboer

DAANE ADAM DEBOER Corporal / USMC

12 February 1986 - 25 June 2010

Corporal Daane Adam Deboer was born 12 February 1986. He graduated from Northview High School in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He joined the Marine Corps on 09 February 2009 and was given the military occupational specialty of Combat Engineer. Upon completion of recruit training at San Diego, California, then Pvt Deboer reported to Marine Combat Training Camp Pendleton, California for further training. On 19 June 2009, PFC Deboer reported to Marine Corps Engineer School in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. On 25 June 2009 he reported to 1st Combat Engineer Bat-talion, Camp Pendleton, California for duty. He was assigned to Company B and was deployed to Operation Enduring Freedom in March of 2010.

While serving with Company B., 2nd Platoon, 3rd Squad, Cpl Deboer participated in deploy-ment training at the Mountain Warfare Training Center Bridgeport, California and 29 Palms, Cali-fornia. Cpl Deboer was then deployed to Operation Enduring Freedom and was assigned to 1st Bat-talion 2nd Marines. His professionalism and leadership ability greatly enhanced the unit’s ability to accomplish many challenging combat operations. Cpl Deboer was a true leader, displaying the fighter leader concept where he demonstrated through his own actions and high motivation a con-tinual inspiration to his peers and subordinates. Even straight from Engineer School he was able to accomplish any task given to him without supervision. His selfless devotion to duty compelled him to put the welfare of his Marines before his own. For his exceptional performance, he was promoted to LCpl on 01 April 2010. Again, just 2 months later, he was Combat Meritoriously Promoted to the rank of Cpl. Cpl Deboer leaves behind a lasting impression of his genuine and superior leadership. Cpl Deboer distinguished himself as a dedicated professional and as a Marine of impeccable charac-ter.

Corporal Deboer is survived by his mother Charlene Zerrenner, father David Deboer and sisters, Aubrey, Ashley, & Lindsey.

Bravo 2nd Platoon’s Combat Memorial Ceremony

Corporal Daane A. Deboer was killed in action, while in action against enemy forces in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. This brave young man gallantly gave his life for his country while fighting at the side of his Marine brothers for what he believed in. His platoon along with Marines of 1st Battalion 2d Marines paid their respects on 10 July 2010 at his field memorial service held at Salaam Bazaar, in the Helmand Province of Afghanistan. The service started with an invoca-tion from Chaplain Adams, followed by the National Anthem and the playing of the Marines Hymn. Corporal Deboer’s memorial detail was lead by his squad leader Sergeant Hunt, and platoon members Corporal Gurule and Lance Corporal Hein. Together, they assembled the fallen warrior ceremonial display of the inverted rifle with fixed bayonet, dog tags draped from the pistol grip, a Kevlar helmet fixed atop the butt stock, and a pair of boots at a 45 degree angle placed at the base of the display. A firing detail performed the 21 gun salute in his honor and was lead by a platoon squad leader Sergeant Lind. The rifle detail consisted of Corporals Brown, Burkes, Fulgham and Warren; Lance Corporals Bolejack and Campbell, and Hospital Corpsman Earl. Personal reflections were given by two of his close comrades, Corporal Gallaher and Lance Corporal Kniffen. They spoke of how much he meant to them and how passionate he was about his desires to “train Marines.” Both Marines spoke of the immense personal admiration they had of Daane and vowed to carry on with certain promises, goals and dreams that they made together. Prayers were recited by both his Platoon Commander, 1st Lieutenant Huston and Platoon Sergeant, Staff Sergeant Croake. Battalion and Company Commanders Manning and Mitchell respectively, both spoke touching words about the quality and character of the person Daane was and of his exceptional performance as a Marine Non-Commissioned Officer. The Commanding General, General Oster-man along with many commanders and sergeants major attended to observe and pay their respects at Corporal Deboer’s ceremony. The memorial was wrapped up with the Bravo Company First Sergeant, 1stSgt Tagliere honoring the dead. He called roll-call which was followed by the 21 Gun Salute and the sounding of Taps. Platoon members then knelt be-fore the Debo’s memorial to say their own private prayer and goodbyes, in honor of their fallen brother.

Corporal Deboer will be sorely missed by all of Bravo Company. The honor of serving with you has touched each of us in ways that will last a lifetime. We will follow in your footsteps, fighting our enemy and we will never forget the price-less cost of accomplishing the mission. Stand tall at the gates of heaven brother, fore we know you will guard them well.

<<< author: First Sergeant Adrian L. Tagliere, 1st Combat Engineer Battalion, Company B, >>>

Marines Prayer Almighty Father, whose command is over all and whose love never fails, make me aware of Thy presence and obedient to Thy will. Keep me true to my best self, guarding me against dishonesty in purpose and deed and help me to live so that I can face my fellow Marines, and loved ones, and Thee without shame or fear. Protect my family. Give me the will to do the work of a Marine and to accept my share of responsibilities with vigor and enthusiasm. Grant me the courage to be proficient in my daily performance. Keep my loyal and faithful to my superiors and to the duties my country and the Marine Corps have entrusted me. Make me considerate of those committed to my leadership. Help me to wear my

uniform with dignity, and let it remind me daily of the traditions which I must uphold. If I am inclined to doubt, steady my faith; if I am temped, make me strong to resist; if I should miss the mark, give me courage to try again.

Guide me with the light of truth and grant me wisdom by which I may understand the answer of my prayer. AMEN.

Sapper’s Lead the Way

Sapper Creed

I am a sapper. The cutting edge of my country's sword.

I will always endeavor to complete my sapper mission regardless of available as-sets. My flexibility and special training shall provide my task force with a tool to

overcome insurmountable odds. I realize that I will be called upon for my expertise in all aspects of mobility,

counter-mobility and survivability. The failure to effectively accomplish my mis-sion could cost the lives of others.

I will set the example by keeping myself physically fit and mentally tough. I will strive to sharpen my sapper skills and the skills of those I support.

The Hooligan Scoop Sheet

The Bravo Hooligan’s

Mission Statement

The mission statement is formulated to de-fine the task at hand. More than just words on paper, it is created in order to focus all hands on a common goal. It is the logical reasoning behind what we do as Ma-rines; Accomplish the mission! As part of the Ground Combat Element (GCE) of the Marine Air Ground Task Force (MAGTF), we the Combat Engineers of the Regimen-tal Combat Team-2 (RCT-2) define our mission as follows:

“Provide mobility, counter mobility, survivabil-ity, and limited general engineering support to the Regimental Combat Team (RCT-2) in or-der to provide a more secure and legitimate

government of Afghanistan.”
