Welcome

Boy, 2017 is just flying by. Here we are preparing our offerings to you for another semester. We have a good variety of courses available to you. Some new offerings such as: Reflexology, Chinese Calligraphy and some repeated but popular offerings like Poetry and Conversational French. Hope you like them.

As mentioned at the Annual meeting, this year we will be doing online registrations. I understand that not all of you are comfortable using a credit card online, but this is a safe and secure system that has been used for many years with no problems So please consider using this new method of registration. If you are really concerned about security, consider purchasing a prepaid credit card to use. Because we will be doing online registrations, we will no longer have the Lottery. Registrations will be on a “first come, first served” basis. You will be notified as to when the catalog is available online and when registration opens so that you can sign up as soon as you want. We will be having some office hours in the Senior College office to help anyone who does not have a computer or is not sure how to go about signing up for the courses. We ask for your patience during this time of change as we are ALL new to this process.

I want to thank our Staff Liaison, Sandi Croft, for all the assistance she has given and is giving us with this changeover.

Senior College Colleagues,It has been my pleasure to work with you over the years, and to witness the growth in courses and students in Senior College. The LAC staff, faculty and students welcome back those of you who are already members of our community, and offer a hearty welcome to the new instructors and new students. We are the only public university in the LA area and are part of the intellectual drivers of the economic and social development of this second largest region of Maine. You have always been great collaborators, and we are grateful that you are part of USM LAC.

This year we are also welcoming new community partners to LAC: In June 2017, Literacy Volunteers of Androscoggin moved into Room 116, and Maine Campus Compact will be moving in Fall 2017 in the Community Wing. We are pleased to have you participate in all the services we offer, including our new exercise room—located on first floor across from my office. We look forward to another productive year and to working closely with you. Thank you for choos-ing Senior College at USM’s Lewiston-Auburn College. Stop by to say hello when you can. I am on the first floor, room 132.

Sincerely,Joyce Taylor Gibson, Ph.D

Greetings from our College Dean Joyce Gibson

Our MissionTo provide a curriculum of intellectually stimulating learning oppor-tunities and special events for persons 50 years of age or older. Senior College is an affiliate of the Elderhostel Institute Network and is one of 17 Senior Colleges throughout Maine. If you are at least 50 years of age, with a curious mind and a keen interest in learning-just for the love of it-you are invited to join with like-minded older learners who are members of the University of Southern Maine Senior College at Lewiston-Auburn College. The courses are taught by peers, with no entrance requirements, grades or tests. Your experience and love of learning are what count. USM provides us access to classrooms, a library, office space and communications, which enables us to maintain low course and membership fees. In return, many members provide volunteer support to Senior College and our course fees contribute to a scholarship fund for undergraduate students and/or other L-A College needs.

MembershipSenior College is self-sustaining, administered by its own Board of Directors, and supported through an annual Non-refundable membership fee of $25. This fee covers the academic year September 1, 2017 through August 31, 2018. Your annual membership allows you to receive Senior College mailings, the use of the campus Information Commons (Library), participate in all Senior College Courses, free Winter classes and Special Interest Senior College Groups. Note: Only members who are enrolled in a Senior College course will be permitted to use the USM LA Computer Lab.

A Special Note of Appreciation to Our Volunteers

Just about all of the services that USM LA Senior College provides its members is made possible by the generous giving of time and talent by our dedicated women and men throughout the academic year and beyond. Many were guided in their roles by our able and very conscientious colleague, Cynthia Peters, who chairs our Volunteer Committee. At our Annual Meeting on May 9 of this year, we were honored to recognize the following supporters of Senior College and express our gratitude for their quiet and effective assistance in making Senior College available to residents in the greater Lewiston -Auburn region: Paul Belisle, Sally Belisle, Delores Bergeron, George Blouin, Joan Bonneau, Lydia Gilbert, Gloria Hall, John Hodgkins, Bonnie Jefferson, Grace Keene, Hugh Keene, Mora LePage, David Marshall, Rachel Morin, June Spear, Donna Sweetser, Ginette Theriault, Maureen Tibbetts, Ralph Tuttle, Crystal Ward, Marilyn Wilkinson.
