description

By Lee Hon Sing WebEx provides an online meeting environment in which a presenter can communicate with the audience through powerpoint slides, word documents and screen sharing. It is thus a very useful environment for conducting online classes and discussion meetings. It has also tools such as chat and polling facilities which enhance the interaction between the presenter and the audience. The sessions can be recorded for future referencing. In this presentation I shall give a quick demonstration and share on my experience on using WebEx for my seminar classes.

Agenda

• A live demonstration• What is WebEx?• Strengths and Weaknesses• What the students think?• Q&A

Page 3: Using WebEx for online class

What is WebEx?

• Suppose you would like to discuss a piece of work remotely, how would you go about it?

• WebEx is more than:– Discussing research work over the telephone

– … over a teleconferencing, e.g. Skype

– Instant messaging, e.g. MSN or FB chat

– Desktop sharing through remote control/assistance

– A recorded lecture

What is WebEx?

• An e-conferencing tool that allows:– Many people speaking, and many (all) audience

listening

– Shares a common document screen for discussion at any point of time

• Document screen can be a ppt slide, an application e.g. Excel, the computer desktop, or a whiteboard

– Display many webcams to many audience

– Other features:• Recording of the session, and upload

• Chat, poll, on-the-spot file sharing

• Discussion group breakout, online assessment

4

If you have to do E-Learning…

• Strengths:– Can conduct the class impromptu rather than make a

“perfectly recorded” version

– It is interactive with audience• Through voice, drawing, polling, webcam

– Allows on-the-spot polling• For instantaneous feedback or demand audience interaction

– Can be automatically recorded, no need for another dedicated recording session

– Students can do presentation to whole class

– Students like/appreciate the “face-to-face”

5

If you have to do E-Learning…

• Weaknesses:– It is technically more challenging

• Expect a slight learning curve

• Expect some students to fail connection on that day

– Cannot ensure that students are not doing “other stuff” while listening to you

– Cannot ensure the identity of the student

6

Why WebEx over Face-to-Face?

• Advantages:– Students can potentially see and hear better, it is like

private tuition

– Students are more relaxed and less stressed

– Good polling facilities

– Best alternative to actual face-to-face

– Chat facility allows students to ask questions, instructor may choose to answer at the right time

– (future?) can be run on Ipad and Iphone with WebEx app

7

Page 8: Using WebEx for online class

Why WebEx over Face-to-Face?

• Disadvantages:– Students need a computer, mic, earphones, etc

– Students may be “absent”

– Connection problems• Interruptions, voice clarity, webcam limited

8

Other possibilities

• E-learning: teacher and students in dispersed locations

• Makeup lecture: student in class, teacher is remote– e.g. teacher on overseas conference

– e.g. teaching/lecturing to a remote audience

• Research seminar by overseas speaker

• Online meeting for research groups/colleagues

• Online tuition and support

• Treasure hunt: students linked through Ipads on field trip or adventure trip

• Macro management: coordination between teams during operation

Improvements on the presentation method. Clarity is the main concern. All lecturers should implement this rather than a small group of lecturers to ensure uniformity. Good job! :)i wish there would be more sessions like thisOverall, it's a cool" experience."An enjoyable and informative session. WebEx is a good platform for elearning lectures.at some points, the audio hangs. the session is not interactive enough, makes lesson less interesting. It's pretty good to have real-time online lecture. It would be good if we can do this more often :) This is a very high-technology tool!!!NilGood experience (:

the signal is not that good, therefore the sound fluctuates a lot. However, in short, it is really interesting. It was conducted rather smoothly.Different but still a good idea, although i still like face to faceInteresting topics covered and thank you for a good lecture. I did have some trouble hearing some of it though, the sound was dissapearing for one or a few seconds pretty often - probably due to delays in sound or something.it was a fun experience :) thought prof ur mike seems a bit softer than the others but i could still hear ok..maybe cos sch is abit noisy..very interesting session, especially for us, the presenting group!Thank you Prof for your effort. Much appreciation =)Flexible and convenient method of teachingfeeling lack of the classroom atmosphere

WebEx is an interesting experiment for me. However, there are some difficulities with the internet connections.everybody should on their webcam to have the live" atmoshphere"This is better than expected. Video and sound quality was great!Interesting.I can ask questions in a timely manner so that was good too. I think it is comparable actually to face to face, lectures, but possibly because there were not that many questions being asked concurrently. Tut Presentation was not very good thgouh!sometimes the audio may lag, but this problem is very minimal so okay :)Good experience! If only the video works:)It is less engaging compared to face to face contact teaching. However, it is a really pleasant experience.

The software is battery depleting. Overall, good experienceawesomeHas been an interesting lessonInteresting experienceThis is fun.its good, but i would prefer face to face much much much more, btw, what happened to clickers? webex should be able to accomodate such things well.love tha fact that proper lessons can continue. haha..better than webcast definitelygoodThank you Prof Lee for putting in so much effort to make the online session work
