OXUSING THE SELESPEEDGEARBOX

The car is fitted with a mechanical gearboxwith electronic control, called Selespeedthat works in two operating modes:MANUAL and DRIVE (AUTOMAT-IC).

This gearbox consists of a conventionalmechanical transmission with gearshiftlever A-fig. 1, to which an electroni-cally-operated electrohydraulic devicehas been added which controls auto-matically the clutch and gear engage-ment.

IMPORTANT To be able to use theSelespeed correctly, it is absolutely nec-essary to thoroughly read the descrip-tion in this supplement to learn the cor-rect operations that can be carried outright from the start.

GEAR LEVER

The gear lever A-fig. 1, is located onthe central console and it is of the float-ing “multi-stable position” type, i.e.: itfeatures three stable positions and threeunstable ones.

The three stable positions correspond toneutral N-fig. 2, reverse R-fig. 2 andcentral position set between the unsta-ble positions + and – (fig. 1).

A0E0417mfig. 1 A0E0418mfig. 2

Unstable positions (i.e.: positions aban-doned as soon as the gear lever is re-leased) are the upshifting position +,the downshifting position – and the au-tomatic mode position M/D (fig. 3).

To return to manual mode, set the gearlever back to M/D.

STEERING WHEEL LEVERS

Two stalks set on steering wheel spokes(fig. 4) have also been provided toincrease/decrease the gear engaged(also with the car stationary, electronickey fitted into ignition device and en-gine off).

With the car stationary and the elec-tronic key not fitted into the ignition de-vice, it is possible to shift the leverwith/without the brake pedal pressedtill reaching the neutral position (N).Once in neutral (N), the gear lever islocked in this position, but the systemwill perform no actuation when shiftingthe lever and the gear engaged will bethe one engaged before removing theelectronic key from the ignition device.

IMPORTANT With the engine run-ning, any error between lever positionand gear engaged is indicated by abuzzer sounding until restoring propercondition.

Manual operation (Manual)IMPORTANT To use the system prop-erly, you are recommended to press ped-als with the right foot only.

In this operating mode, the decision tochange gear is left to the driver who de-cides the most appropriate moment.

Proceed as follows:

❒ press the brake pedal;

❒ set the gear lever to N;

❒ start the engine;

❒ move the gear lever to central posi-tion (between + and –) to engagethe 1st gear, or to R to engage re-verse keeping the brake pedalpressed;

❒ with gear lever to central positionand brake pedal pressed it is alsopossible to engage 1st or 2nd gear bythe levers on the steering wheel;

❒ release the brake pedal and pressthe accelerator pedal;

❒ with the car on the move, move thegear lever to + to upshift or to – todownshift.

When shifting gears it is not necessaryto release the accelerator pedal.

The system will cut in preventing gearshifting if the request to change gear couldimpair regular operation of engine andtransmission.

The system will shift gears automaticallywhen the engine reaches idle rpm (e.g.:at slowing down).

Do not rest your handon the gear lever whenyour are not shifting

gears or if you are in Drive/Manual mode.

Automatic operation (Drive)

IMPORTANT To use the system prop-erly, you are recommended to press ped-als with the right foot only.

OXSTARTING THE ENGINE

The car is fitted with an electronic en-gine immobilising device: if the enginefails to start, see paragraph “Alfa RomeoCODE system” in section “Dashboardand controls” in the Owner’s Manual.

IMPORTANT Tampering with the ig-nition device can cause accidental steer-ing lock.

IMPORTANT Always fit the electron-ic key fully into the ignition device till itlocks into place.

IMPORTANT Never take the electron-ic key out of the ignition device while thecar is running unless you have to carryout an emergency removal (see para-graph “Removing the electronic key fromthe ignition device in an emergency”),this ensures that the steering lock is dis-engaged when the car is on the move(e.g.: towing the car).

Sport/Normal operatingmode

To engage the Sport/Normal (S) op-erating mode, press button SPORT(fig. 6) regardless of the operatingmode selected.

When this operating mode is on, the dis-play will show letter S.

To disengage the Sport/Normal op-erating mode, press again buttonSPORT (letter S will disappear fromthe display). Moving the gear lever orshifting gear will not deactivate the op-erating mode.

If the gear lever is in Automatic Sportoperating mode, moving the gear leverto M/D will engage the Manual Sportoperating mode (and vice versa).

The Sport operating mode activatesspecial engine/gearbox strategies thatfavour speedy gear shifting.

Do not rest your handon the gear lever whenyour are not shifting

gears or if you are in Drive/Manual mode.

When the Automatic operation is en-gaged, the display will show letter Dand the gear engaged.

With Automatic mode active, the sys-tem decides to change gear dependingon car speed, engine rpm and how theaccelerator pedal is pressed. It is how-ever possible to change gears with thegear lever or the levers on the steeringwheel without deactivating the auto-matic mode: this function called “gearadvice” suspends the automatic modefor the time required to change gear.

We recommend thatduring the initial periodyou do not drive to full

car performance (e.g.: excessiveacceleration, long journeys attop speed, sharp braking, etc.).

When the engine isswitched off never leavethe electronic key into the

ignition device to prevent point-less current absorption fromdraining the battery.

Running the engine inconfined areas is ex-

tremely dangerous. The engineconsumes oxygen and pro-duces carbon monoxide whichis a highly toxic and lethal gas.

WARNING

To start the engine proceed as follows:

❒ press the brake pedal and set thegear lever to N;

❒ fit the electronic key fully into the ig-nition device till it stops; press but-ton START/STOP.

IMPORTANT If the start button ispressed with gear lever in position dif-ferent from N and the brake pedalpressed, the display shows a message(see paragraphs “Warning lights andmessages”). In that event, to completeignition, it is necessary to position thelever in N within 3 seconds from press-ing the START/STOP button, keepingthe brake pedal pressed. After 3 sec-onds, to complete ignition, it is neces-sary to press again the START/STOPbutton after moving the lever to N.

After starting:

❒ the gearbox sets to neutral (N) au-tomatically;

❒ display shows N;

❒ gears that can be engaged are 1st,la 2nd or reverse gear (R), withbrake pedal pressed.

IMPORTANT Engine can only bestarted with gear lever at neutral (N)and brake pedal pressed.

IMPORTANT Should the starting-upprocedure be executed with the gearboxnot in working order, carry out the “De-layed start-up” procedure (see also therelative messages): keeping theSTART/STOP button pressed for atleast 7 seconds, with the brake helddown, the engine will start. The systemwill remain in the recovery mode (max-imum gear allowed: 3rd, Automaticmode is not available). Should the en-gine not start, seek assistance from theAlfa Romeo Authorized Services.

OXStart-up failures

The system can recognise start-up fail-ures.

In the event of a failure, the electronickey can be removed from the ignitiondevice to enable the driver to carry outthe following operations:

❒ turn the instrument panel off by press-ing button START/STOP or re-moving the electronic key from the ig-nition device;

❒ start the engine again by pressing thebrake pedal and button START/STOP with gear lever in neutral(N).

IMPORTANT In the event of enginestalling/racing while the car is running,due to safety reasons it will not be pos-sible to take the electronic key out ofthe ignition device. To remove it, pressbutton START/STOP with brake ped-al released and car stopped.

HOW TO WARM UP THEENGINE AFTER IT HAS JUSTSTARTED

Proceed as follows:

❒ drive off slowly, letting the engineturn at medium revs. Do not accel-erate abruptly;

❒ do not drive at full performance forthe initial kilometres. Wait until thecoolant temperature gauge startsmoving.

IMPORTANT Opening the driver’sdoor will make the system activate thehydraulic section in order to prepare itfor next engine starting.

Important notes

If at start-up the engine turns off, restartit by pressing the brake pedal and thenpress button START/ STOP.

If after a few attempts the engine doesnot start, do not insist but contact AlfaRomeo Authorized Services.

With car started the electronic key islocked into the ignition device and it canbe removed only after switching the en-gine off. With car running and keylocked into the ignition device, forcedkey removal could damage the ignitiondevice.

Start-up failures, if any, are indicated bya message on the display. In this casecontact Alfa Romeo Authorized Services.

STARTING OFF

The engine can be started either with1st, 2nd (recommended on poor griproads) or reverse (R) gear.

Starting in 1st gear

❒ press the brake pedal;

❒ with gear lever in N or R move itto central position (between + and–);

❒ release the brake pedal and pressthe accelerator (pressing the accel-erator pedal quickly flat out and de-activating the ASR, if any, will obtaina “brilliant” start).

Starting in 2nd gear

❒ press the brake pedal;

❒ with gear lever in N or R move itto central position and then to + ;

❒ with gear lever in central positionyet, move it to +;

❒ release the brake pedal and pressthe accelerator pedal.

Never leave childrenunattended in the car.

Always remove the electronickey when leaving the car andtake it out with you.

WARNING

Starting in reverse

❒ press the brake pedal;

❒ move the lgear ever to R;

❒ release the brake pedal and pressthe accelerator pedal.

With speed below 5 km/h it is possibleto shift from 1st gear to reverse (R) andvice versa without pressing the brakepedal and moving fastly the gear leverto prevent lever locking in neutral (N).

IMPORTANT If the request is not ef-fected, the system will keep the gearengaged or will set the gearbox to neu-tral (N), and therefore the manoeuvreshall be repeated with speed below 5km/h.

BUZZER INDICATIONS

Due to safety reasons, the buzzer is ac-tivated when the car is parked with thegearbox in neutral (N) (signal that canbe noted when removing the electronickey from the ignition device).

With the car stationary, the engine run-ning and gear (1st, 2nd or R) engaged,the system activates the buzzer and au-tomatically shifts to neutral (N) when:

❒ no action is made on the accelera-tor and/or brake pedals for at least3 minutes;

❒ the brake is pressed for over 10minutes;

❒ the driver’s door is opened and theaccelerator and brake are nottouched for at least 1.5 seconds;

❒ a gearbox failure has been detected.

OXIMPORTANT NOTES

❒ With the car stopped and a gear en-gaged always keep the brake ped-al pressed until deciding to moveoff, then release the brake pedaland accelerate gradually;

❒ during prolonged halts with the en-gine running it is advisable to keepthe gearbox in neutral (N);

❒ to safeguard clutch efficiency do notuse the accelerator to keep the carstill (e.g.: when the car is parkedfacing uphill) since clutch over-heating could damage it. Use thebrake pedal and press the acceler-ator pedal only when deciding tomove off;

❒ use second gear only when morecontrol is needed for moving off ma-noeuvres with poor grip;

PARKING

To park the car safely it is absolutely nec-essary to press the brake pedal and toengage the first gear or reverse (R) andalso to engage the hand brake.

Block the wheels with a wedge or astone if the car is parked on a steepslope.

After having removed the electronic keyfrom the ignition device, it is also ab-solutely necessary to wait for the displayshowing the gear engaged to go off be-fore releasing the brake pedal.

Do not leave the electronic key in the ig-nition switch to prevent draining the bat-tery. Always remove the electronic keywhen leaving the car and take it outwith you.

IMPORTANT NEVER leave the carwith gearbox in neutral (N).

❒ the gear shown on the display andthe gear engaged may not corre-spond;

❒ though highly inadvisable, if whentravelling downhill for some unex-pected reason the car is set to neu-tral (N), when the engagement ofa gear is requested, the system au-tomatically engages the best gearin relation to the speed of the car toallow the correct transmission oftorque to the wheels;

❒ if required, it is possible to shift gearswith engine off, electronic key fittedinto the ignition device and brakepedal pressed. In this event you arerecommended to wait at least for 5seconds between one gear shift andthe other to safeguard the hydraulicsystem, specially the pump;
