2 Using the iPad

The iPad is quite different to Windows based PC’s, particularly in its use of finger gestures to

scale, rotate and delete items in its user interface. Before using this guide you should briefly

read the documentation that came with the iPad to familiarize yourself with how to

navigate the device and give you an idea of its capabilities.

iPad user manuals can be found on the Apple website at:

http://support.apple.com/manuals/#ipad

not authenticate through the “eduroam” wireless network.

34 Global Roaming and Data Charges Before you travel overseas email [email protected] or phone extension 4545 to check if

your 3G enabled device has international roaming activated. International roaming charges

can be high and vary depending on the country you are visiting.

Be aware that Telstra data plans offered for use in Australia do not include International

Roaming data usage. International Roaming data charges are substantially higher than

domestic data charges. On average the rate for data is $0.015per KB (which equates to

$15.00 per MB) and 50c flag fall for each data session initiated by your device.

Telstra have two International Data Plans available which provide you with a set monthly

allowance to use towards eligible data usage in selected countries. The plans are casual and

will continue on a month to month basis until you cancel the plan.

Here are some more tips to avoid arriving back in Australia with a huge bill for data usage on

your iPad:

Turn off Data Roaming Return to the main screen by pressing the Home Button at the bottom of your iPad. Then

tap the “Settings” button and then select the “Cellular Data” option.

Page 36: Using the iPad - JCU Australia · Using the iPad The iPad is quite different to Windows based PC’s, particularly in its use of finger gestures to scale, rotate and delete items

35

Tap “Data Roaming” to toggle it to the OFF position.

Page 37: Using the iPad - JCU Australia · Using the iPad The iPad is quite different to Windows based PC’s, particularly in its use of finger gestures to scale, rotate and delete items

36 Turn off VPN if not in use To turn the VPN connection on or off, Return to the main screen by pressing the Home

Button at the bottom of your iPad then tap the “Settings” icon.

Tap the “VPN” button to toggle the VPN connection to either the ON or OFF position.

Try to use wireless internet access where possible Take advantage of internet cafés and wireless hotspots where available as these will usually

provide cheaper and faster local internet access than is available via the 3G network.
